The Premier Inn Bedford South had only be open for a week when we visited. We arrived early, 2 & a half hours before we were supposed to check in, but the welcome we received was very accommodating. The receptionist was very helpful and quickly went off to see if a room was ready. He returned to tell me our allocated room (a family room on the ground floor, Room 9 - right at the far end of the corridor) had already been cleaned so we were able to get the key straight away.
The hotel is lovely and is a new design for Premier Inn. Rather than a key card slot, everything is done via sensor. You hold your card upto the sensor and the doors open. All very swish. The rooms are gorgeous. Lovely and clean as you'd expect from a hotel that has only just opened. Huge LCD tv's installed on the walls, and mood lighting. The bathroom was also very nice, however I do have an issue. No bath. For me personally, a bath is a must in a family room. It should at least be stated on the website that there are no bath facilities in rooms. My 4 year old does like a shower, and to be fair the shower was huge with 2 shower heads so you can choose which flow you prefer, but the design hasn't been thought through very well for those with children. The shower screen doesn't open, and its a long reach in to turn the shower on and reach the shower gel dispenser, which inevitably resulted in me getting wetter than i'd have liked.... Other than that I have no other criticism's of the rooms themselves.
Our stay had the potential to be fault free, however after a day out with friends, we returned to at 8:15pm to find we had no heating in the room. On reporting the problem to the lovely girl on reception we were made aware it was due to a power cut that had occurred in the area a short while earlier and had affected the whole hotel, but she was working on it. We got our son to bed, expecting the heating to come back on fairly quickly. 9:45 arrived and we still had no heating, and it was getting quite cold in the room by now. My husband popped back to reception and the receptionist told him she was waiting for her manager to arrive. A fence needed to be climbed to reset the system and she couldn't reach to do it, but she hoped it would be fixed soon. We settled in for the night. Thankfully the duvets are quite thick but it was still cold, my nose was freezing! We received a knock on the door about 11pm. It was the receptionist. She had come to apologise again for the lack of heating and had very kindly found us a gas heater to use. Her efforts were really appreciated and she really is an asset to the hotel. Unfortunately the gas heater wasn't enough to heat the room and our son woke a couple of times because he was cold. The heating DID come back on sometime between 1am and 2am, and the room heated up fairly quickly from that point. However the cold start to the evening did put a dampener on the night and meant none of us were as rested as we could have been.
On checkout, the same receptionist (I was beginning to think the poor girl was never going to get to go home!) asked how our night had been, and obviously we pointed out that despite her best efforts it had been a little chilly. She very kindly offered us a full refund under Premier Inn's "Good Night's Sleep" guarantee.
Aside from the heating blip, this really is a very nice hotel, and we would stay there again if we're in the area. Its got the makings of being a wonderful hotel. I just hope that its maintained well, as the cleanliness and finish are what make it nice. However, its the staff that really make this hotel. They really are a credit to Premier Inn!!
