Just spent a lovely day in Deeside, and de4cided to have lunch at the Station Restaurant in Ballater, somewhere I had visited several years ago, and had happy memories of, but on this occasion it was sadly lacking. It was busy when we arrived but were shown a table and given the menu's from one of the two young girls who were serving. After a 15 min wait she returned for our order, the drinks came out quickly, Normally we dont mind waiting for our food especially if it is freshly cooked, but tables which arrived later than us had actually eaten there food before our came out, after ordering we had waited 40 minutes for the food. Dad had a smoked haddock omelette which was lovely, the chips that came with it were cold, I ordered a sandwich and an extra side order of chips, which were also cold. The sandwich was lovely but advertised as being chiabatta bread but came as a baguette (which I prefered actually), Mums Cullen Skink soup was another mater, totally unedible and consisted solely of leeks and a creamy broth, no fish in it at all and it only had a sweet flavour to it. Now I know it was busy and there were only two serving staff on, but they visited every other table but ours to ask if everything was ok, but they avoided us like the plague, they could see that Mums bown of soup was untouched, and I tried to attract their attention to get service but to no avail. I had to go and stand at their serving station before they would acknowledge me I took them back to our table to let them know about the food, and I asked for the bill stating that I wasnt going to pay for the soup, no apologieswere given the young girl only said that they were short staffed, but as I pointed out she didnt do the cooking and if they were that short staffed then the chef shouldnt put up food that couldnt be served and as the food was cold how long had it sat out. I also ponted out that there was no running water in the ladies toilet so was unable to wash my hands and was promptly told that 1 of the taps did work, to which my Mum pointed out that when we were in non of the taps worked we tried them all. On leaving the premises we were speaking to other customers who had the same issues as us, Cullen Skink soup was minging and food cold and the length of time waiting when customers who arrived and ordered after they did were given food first, its not as if there were any big tables just 2's and 3's, but totaly lacking any organisation. I dont blame the 2 girls serving but there must have been someone more senior there on the premises who should be seen to be in charge, all in all very disappointed and wont be back, You got the feeling that they didnt care much as, most of their business are tourists who probably wont be back, but we weren't we were just up to visit my grandmothers grave, and will definately give other establishments our business in future.
