“Not quite there but incredible value for money”
Reviewed 22 April 2011

We had some reservations before we left for our Sunday to Friday break because we'd read a couple of reviews indicating that many rooms haven't been touched. The room we were allocated (208) had more or less been done up and would have taken no time at all to finish. In fact, we had such a good deal for dinner, bed and breakfast that we would have happily finished the job off ourselves! A couple of walls needed a coat of paint and some "stuff" is missing - no waste bin or hairdryer. These are really minor niggles and I feel ashamed at criticising the place at all because of the bargain price.
The staff were without exception friendly and helpful and the food was fine. We greatly appreciated the free wifi in the public areas - handy for researching where to go and what to do.
The hotel is in a handy central location and there is certainly no shortage of stuff to do in the area, particularly given how lucky we were with the weather. The Deeside Way (old railway line) between Ballater and Aboyne is great for cycling or walking - with a stop for coffee in Dinnet. Loads of other good walks too. We also did quite a few castles (Corgarff, Crathes, Kildrummy, Drum) so no shortage of stuff to do.
In summary, then, there are a load of things still to be completed in the hotel and hopefully they will get there soon. That said, I have paid four times the price of this hotel for half the quality, so I for one certainly won't be complaining.

This part refurbished hotel has been renamed the Ballater Inn and taken over by Crerar Hotels. There is obviously still work to be done on the refurbishment, but the hotel is clean and tidy. The Hotel only reopened at the begining of April 2011 so there are still some small issues that need attention. Overall a good hotel with good food, great location and some great deals. Very much geared towards the older generation of visitor.
Hotel has some free wifi.

Please note: This review is of the Deeside INN and NOT the Deeside HOTEL.
After receiving vouchers from Crerar Hotels regarding the Deeside Inn, we decided to try it out. We arrived on 8th April after a three hour journey and parked opposite the hotel, our first impression was that not much had changed from the outside apart from the original name Loirston Hotel, with the hotel appearing still to have rotted window frames, that fresh painting had not concealed. We entered the reception area and the first thing my husband said was "I thought this had been refurbished" and the receptionist told us "some of the bedrooms and most of the public areas have". We were given our room key (111 Macallum) and upon going upstairs I remember the same decor and carpet. On entering our room we were disappointed to see we had not been allocated one of the refurbished rooms (artist impression on voucher, very nice). Not only was it not refurbished, it looked as if it had not even had a fresh lick of paint and was not particularly clean. The room was shabby and in much need of upgrading, window was filthy on the outside and the bathroom was in very poor condition, bath chipped, shower head had a brown mould over it and dirt and dust on floor. Our outlook was onto a roof containing various lengths of old, rusty cast iron guttering and discarded tubes of gutter sealant.

We decided we were not going to spend three nights in there. We went back to reception and spoke to a manager (no name tag on, so we can’t say who he was) and told him we were not staying in the room and that we felt the marketing department had got us there on false promises. All he said was "I am sorry to hear that" not, as we had hoped "I will take a note of your complaint or can we do anything for you like give you another room or would you like to sit down and have a coffee or a meal before you have to drive three hours back home"

We felt let down and treated badly and will not be returning.

Spent two nights here. This hotel (formerly the Loirston Hotel) had just been re-opened for a few days hence service was a bit slow, however I am sure this will improve as they find there feet. Staff were very pleasant and meals were excellent. We were particularly greatful for an amendment to the scheduled breakfast time to suit our needs.

Very comfortable cosy Hotel, good location, friendly and helpful staff. Plenty choice for Dinner and all piping hot! Yes some of the decor in the corridors was a bit shabby, but overall for the price, it's really wasn't a problem.

The whole team at the Loirston provided excellent, friendly service and we were 1st time coach tourers and were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food and service at the price we paid.

The carpet has holes, repaired with tape, everything in the foyer is chipped. Rooms are small and the walls are thin, the gentle snore of a sleeping neighbour being clearly audible. The breakfasts are revolting and the chef could do with a wash and if I turn up early to breakfast I really don't want to be rudely received by someone who thinks I should have stayed in bed longer. As for the waitresses, I didn't expect silver service but you don't snatch a plate away as soon as it is empty. Personally, I think this sort of hotel gives Scotland a bad name. Avoid.
