“Lovely Stay”
Reviewed 16 June 2014

We stayed there on Saturday night and it was great. We arrived well before check-in time but we were given tea and coffee and told when our room was ready, which was only a few minutes. The room was nice and clean and the bed very comfortable. I had the steak at dinner and it was fabulous and came with proper chunky chips. My wife had the sea bass and it got the thumbs up too. The hotel was busy but we never had to wait for service either then or at breakfast. Talking of breakfast this was one of the nicest we've had for a long time, the sausages were to die for and everything was freshly cooked. All in all a very good hotel and we'll be back that's for sure.

We went to eat here, the restaurant was half empty and the bar eating area empty but the staff said they were fully booked and couldn't serve us - even though there were no reservation signs on the tables. Rude staff, dreadful customer service don't bother.

I have read your review with great disappointment and surprise. Whilst we all have faults, I have to say that I have a very well intended team and it is unthinkable to me that any one of them would be rude. That is something I have never seen in my team. Before moving to The Deeside Inn I had personally experienced the poor, indifferent, and yes, sometimes, rude, service of many three star hotels. Making sure that my team where the exact opposite of this was, and still is, a key focus. Rudeness from staff is not be tolerated. I can understand your frustration though and can sympathise with that. I can not sure exactly when you stayed so cannot be specific. However, I can only presume that we had a private party coming in or some such thing. We are not in the habit of turning business away that's for sure. On a final note, Crerar Hotels is very much committed to quality. If you are in the area again - please drop in. It would be good to speak to you and I would be delighted to arrange for your to have some lunch or supper. Best wishes, Joanna

We stayed here for 2 nights & we were glad to leave. The rooms were awful - cobwebs everywhere, toilet didn't flush well, mould on lampshade, shower curtain broken & cover had fallen off extractor fan & the wires were exposed! This was meant to be a king size room but was tiny & overpriced at the reduced rate we got it for. Didn't complain as friends were staying there & their rooms were just as bad so we didn't think any room would have been better!

The staff were fine but possibly on a power trip - 3 tables in the dining room were busy but we had to wait 15 minutes as we hadn't booked! Also at breakfast you had to wait for a table because 2 people couldn't possibly sit at a table for 4 (even though they were not busy).
The one positive was that the food was lovely and the service was quick.

The hotel needs a massive refurbishment before I would go back to stay here! I would advise you to go to a different hotel as it really overpriced. Ballater is a stunning town and definitely worth the visit but make sure you have a comfy hotel to come back to!

Room Tip: Go to a different hotel if you want a nice room!

I am obviously very sorry to read your review. I understand entirely that when you are with friends you don't always want to make a fuss as such, which I appreciate. However, I am always keen to know if something is wrong during a guest's stay so that I can try and put it right. There is absolutely excuse no the issues that you raise and I have investigated these myself so that they do not happen again. I am sincerely sorry - both at the fact that you did not enjoy your time with us but that you had such a poor impression of what I believe is a lovely hotel. We will work harder to get it right every time. Best wishes, Joanna

Very disappointing, especially in bar and restaurant: slow service, and food of indifferent quality. The hotel has potential but the staff need better training and the chain needs to exert more quality control.

It is always disappointing to receive a poor review but I feel that yours was certainly justified and I am sorry that your stay was not enjoyable. At the time we did have an issue with the kitchen which slowed the service down - but I am relieved to say that we have a new head chef starting tomorrow, of whom we have high hopes, and I expect the issue of slow service to be a thing of the past. Your point regarding training is well taken and you will be pleased to hear that we have spent a not inconsiderable amount of time working on polishing up our service as recently as the last 10 days. Thank you for your comments - if you decide to visit us again I feel confident that you will find us much improved. Best wishes, Joanna Whysall

We paid £124 for a double room which was at best shabby, the bathroom looked as if it had been salvaged from a sixties tower block and the bath had a great chunk of enamel missing.
The windows were all screwed shut so we had an uncomfortable warm night, to add to this we were woken at 4.55 am by somebody playing a piano (there was a piano in the reception area so can only assume the night porter was bored). When I mentioned this to reception on checking out she just shrugged her shoulders, we will never set foot in this hotel again.

Room Tip: Don't go there.

It is always disappointing when a guest does not enjoy their stay with us and I am only sorry that we were not able to make you more comfortable at the time. I am glad to say that the window you speak of is being replaced so that issue will be addressed. It is very inconsiderate of someone to play the piano at such a time and I will remind our night porter of that. With best wishes, Joanna

We stayed at the Deeside Inn for 3 nights in mid May and had a lovely time. The hotel is very welcoming with open fires and the staff could not be more helpful and friendly. The hotel is perfectly situated within Ballater and lies at its centre. The Jetsonics from London were playing a gig in the bar on the Saturday night which only enhanced our stay - they were brilliant.
We have no hesitation in recommending the Deeside Inn as a great place to stay and we hope to be returning soon.

I am very pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and delighted that you enjoyed The Jetsonics. We are trying to develop our bar into a first class music venue and we are very grateful that such a fantastic band as The Jetsonics are prepared to come up all the way from London. They are playing again on 17th November so please let us know if you would like to come along for that. Best wishes and thank you for taking the time to review us, Joanna

Just returned from a 2 night stay with my husband, we were visiting family who live in Ballater. For the price we paid (£248 for b&b ) it was a totally disappointing, the room we had 23 on the second floor was shabby and in bad need of upgrading, the reception and bar areas were dull and dreary. And the bar prices were nothing short of extortion £9.60 for a glass of vine & a pint of cider, when we mentioned it on checking out, we were told this was in line with other hotels in the area, well that's not true, we had a drink in the Alexander Hotel 100 mtrs away and the same drinks were £3.00 cheaper, and this hotel for far nicer. Would We ever return to the Deeside Inn? absolutely NOT

Room Tip: Don't accept a room facing the back as you hear deliveries being brought in before 7am

I am sincerely sorry that you did not enjoy your recent stay with us. I do think though that our prices are very good for a hotel and our beer and spirit prices are in line with the local bars - we did this on purpose so that we don't alienate the local villagers. It is always disappointing when guests don't enjoy themselves and am sorry that we did not do more to make you more comfortable. Best wishes Joanna
