Owner description: Neighbouring Balmoral Castle, Royal Lochnagar is the perfect place to discover how Scotch Whisky is made. Watch as our team of operators tend to our traditional mashtun, gleaming copper stills and fill casks at our traditional distillery, which retains much of its original charm. The tour ends with a dram of the award-winning Royal Lochnagar 12 Year Old Single Highland Malt.

We had never come across a dram of Royal Lochnagar before our visit here and we're glad we made the detour here on our way up to Speyside as the tour was really informative and personable (thanks to Gordon) - and the drams were a pleasant surprise.

We learnt a lot about where the whisky gains its flavours - with the revelation that if you rub a little of the whisky in your palm you release the smell of hay!

The staff were very conscientious, even heading out into the car park to let some visitors pulling up that they were about to miss the tour.

This place is also a great photo opportunity as its setting is beautiful and fits all the images your mind may conjure up about a distillery set in the hills.

We have visited a few distilleries over the years and this rates high among them . The tour itself is about 45 mins long and informative , the distillery is small do you get to see all it's workings close up, we were there on a Thursday which apparent is the best day due to that being the busiest day of the week when all the production is taking place at once. Tour done on to the tasting , nice whiskey and well explained . We are members of the ' friends of malt whiskey' look it up on the web, it's free and it gets you into the tour for free, who doesn't like that, we paid an extra £3 to try the special reserve, and at £150 a bottle it's worth £3 to try it... Excellent 1.5 hours give it a go

We visited this distillery on 21st May with my husband's niece and her husband.
It was a beautiful day and as they had never been to this area of Scotland before we thought it would be a good day out for them with such wonderful scenery thrown in.

We were very lucky as upon arrival we discovered we were the first ones there that morning so had the pleasure of Jim all to ourselves!

Our guide Jim was very informative and the tour was most interesting, Royal Lochnagar whisky is still made the traditional way with just 6 staff which is just a blessing compared to bigger distilleries relying on computer help also.

We paid the extra £3 each to savour the samplings at the end of our tour so could not resist buying a couple of bottles at the end of the tour, well worth a visit to this beautiful little distillery nestled near Lochnagar and Glen Muick

Cheers Jim!

Visited here on the way home from the Spirit of Speyside whisky festival in May 2014. Really glad we popped in here - the staff were superb and their expertise welcomed. The shop had a great range of whiskies to suit all budgets. Definitely one to savour!

Not knowing much about the Scottish whiskey I was taken by positive surprise. This small exclusive distillery still makes whiskey the traditional way and use human touch where larger distilleries have computers and automation. We took the guided tour. Our guide Gordon made an excellent tour and took us through the distillery processes, as well as added great jokes and fun. Not to mention the tasting or nosing of the whiskey - truly, for me the whiskey has never tasted better thanks to Gordons guided tour.
