Excellent stay, made very welcome and Kathy is very accommodating. Room was good size and ensuite. Comfortable beds.

Great hostel breakfasts (porridge, cereals and/or toast) and free wifi with plenty of local info.

I hope her cat is ok (unwell at time of visit)!

Would stay again!

CathyLow, Owner at Schoolhouse Ballater, responded to this reviewResponded 10 January 2013

Thanks for taking the time to review your stay at Schoolhouse - it's much appreciated. We're glad you enjoyed your stay and glad that you appreciated the complimentary breakfast served to all our guests staying in the hostel part of Schoolhouse.

At Schoolhouse, we offer the same warm welcome to all our guests - whether they're staying in the hostel or in one of our spacious B&B private rooms with superking beds and cooked breakfasts.

Schoolhouse is an excellent base for outdoors enthusiasts seeking top quality hostel-type accommodation and also for individuals, couples, families and friends seeking top quality B&B-type accommodation - so if you want to come again with wives and girlfriends, this may another option - or of course, come back to the hostel style any time!

Austin - the Schoolhouse cat is hanging on in there - for now - we'll see what the next wee while brings....

Second stay at this homely B&B run by the lovely Cathy. Immaculate, spacious and comfortable accomodation in the centre of Ballater. We had a delicous breakfast with quality produce. Can not fault this B&B. Cathy would be happy to share her knowledge of the area to anyone planning a visit. For dinner we ate at the nearby Alexandra Hotel and the food was gorgeous and great value.

I was working in the area and my company booked me in to the schoolhouse , I spent three lovely nights and enjoyed a great breakfast every morning , a lovely sleep every night and all the facilities you would expect. But the nicest thing was the warmness from the host cath she was lovely and nothing was to much trouble. Thank you for a lovely stay ,highly recommend.

we arrived at ballater late one evening afer being chased out of our tent by midges! on arrival at balleter, it seemed that all accommodations were "fully booked" although we did doubt this and found people to be quite rude. we called the school house as our last option (we had found the number in a small accommodation booklet we had picked up in tourist information). the owner was very friendly on the phone, she even came out in to the road to direct us to the car park!

the school house feels steeped in history, it is decorated beautifully and the owners encourage guests to use the communal areas as they are very interested in sharing their beautiful furniture and space. we found both owners to be very friendly and welcoming, they really did make us feel at home after a horrible day inhaling midges.

the room we had did not have an ensuite, however the bathroom was located right next door and we did not have difficulty getting in there. the bathroom was very clean and had a power shower. the beds were warm and comfy. the tv was a good size and located so you could watch it in bed. the breki was cooked to perfection and very satisfying!

in the morning when we had paid our bill we had a long chat with the owner who talked freely about her and her husbands travels, which we found to be very interesting. we explained the porblems we had encountered with the midges and she gave us very helpful advice on where to go to avoid them so we could continue with our camping tour.

this was an all round lovely place to stay and really rescued our trip! i would definately reccommend this place!
