We were going to a 25th Wedding Anniversary Party on the 22nd of March 2014, and booked a superior room at the Mercure. The first thing I noticed on entering the room (no. 112) was a rather large and suspicious stain on the carpet - all it needed was a chalk outline of a body around it! You get the picture. However, the bed was good and I was only there for one night, so it was fine. However, the following morning despite my best efforts, I could not get anything apart from ice cold water out of the shower. After a very bracing (and very quick) shower I went down to check out only to be joined by a friend who had been staying in room 118 and was complaining that he couldn't turn the heating down in his room! We complained to the girl on the front desk, who was most apologetic and asked for my mobile number so that the General Manager could ring me. I still haven't had that call, but instead I got two customer satisfaction survey requests in my inbox from Paul Rodgers (the hotel GM) asking for me to complete the survey. I did exactly that, highlighting in great detail what happened, but still haven't heard from the elusive Mr Rodgers. Surely nipping a problem in the bud is better than letting it fester with poor communication? Now I will never stay at a Mercure hotel ever again.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms 112 and 118

Client and hotel have communicated on this issue.
It does perhaps highlight that guests should contact reception when things fail as there is often a simple solution, leaving issues until checkout can be frustrating for everybody.

We stayed on a Great Weekends bargain all inclusive £198. Staff were young and friendly. Room was clean with white crisp sheets Food was excellent. The offer included house wine or a reduction of £7 off any bottle from the menu, which we did so £11.50. It is 5 mins walk to Hale station which goes to Manchester return £3.90. Taxi to airport was £10. Excellent location and good value hotel. Recommend.

We stayed in early March 2014 as part of a big family wedding held locally. We had booked a family room, which was large and spacious with good facilities.

Having travelled for 6 hours to get there, we arrived an hour after check-in opened to find that our room (and it seemed many of the other rooms for the wedding guests) were not ready. The first response from reception was that it would be around 30 minutes for the cleaning team to get to our room and make it ready. However, once the manager was involved this became about 5 minutes with an apology and drinks vouchers issued. Excellent customer service in the end but not initially.

The family room itself was conveniently located on the ground floor and a baby cot was provided as requested at no additional charge.

The breakfast buffet was excellent, with a good range of high quality continental and cooked options continuously replenished by cheerful and helpful staff. And at a room rate of around £85 with breakfast, this was exceptionally good value.

We stayed 2 nights and would stay here again.

Good
- Relatively good location. Manchester is surprisingly awkward to get into from the South, but this hotel is located just off the M56 and is handy for the airport too as well the centre of town
- Locality is nice, Hale is pleasant enough with a few good restaurants and pubs without being stupidly expensive.
- Swimming Pool/Fitness area. Residents have the use of leisure facilites which are well maintained. Unusual for a 3 star hotel.
- reception and bar areas well maintained.
- Staff very helpful and polite
- Nice breakfast

The Bad
- Exterior not particularly inspiring
- Needs a some updating indoor. Looks a bit tired and in need of TLC
- Place is a bit of a labyrinth of staircases and corridors

Thanks for listing both the good and not so good points but guess taking an overall view that you enjoyed your stay.
Perhaps we are not a pretty building but we are not a concrete block either as many new build hotels appear to be these days, I would like to think that the building has character and fits in well with the surrounding area.
Pleased that you felt us to be of good value

I was really concerned when I read some of the reviews on this hotel but need not have worried. From check in to check out everything was marvellous. The staff & service could not be faulted. Rooms were comfortable. We had 4 rooms on the top floor which was great for us girlies! Ok so there is no lift but even 2 flights up we were all fine. Party ages range from mid 40s to 70! Food was fabulous & ok so there are supplements on certain choices but isn't there always? The ratio of staff to guests was superb. At breakfast everything was replenished quickly & was hot & well cooked. Dinner had an excellent choice & the house wine (we were on an all inclusive deal) flowed freely. Can only assume that the folks posting negative reviews are either very hard to please or failed to raise their concerns at time of vist. Can only congratulate manager ( in reception on our arrival - very friendly) & staff on all their efforts to ensure our weekend went without hitch!
