Description: Believed to date back to the 12th century, The Ostrich on the old Bath to London road, close to Heathrow Airport and Terminal 5, is said to be England's third oldest inn. It's certainly a very fine example of its kind, combining everything you'd expect in a historic coaching inn: beams, nooks, fireplaces, crooked stairs, a cobbled courtyard and an interesting (albeit macabre) history. The chunky contemporary wooden furniture and bright colours come as a bit of a surprise, and work well with the huge, sagging beams, standing timbers and open fires. A wide-ranging menu serves good, freshly prepared food and reflects the demands of the area (the M4 and M25 are very near) and the concomitant mix of people. The specials board changes daily, while a lunch menu that is always ready within 20 minutes. A hearty Sunday lunch menu is served all dy long allowing you to indulge in a proper lie in and still have time for a roast.A private function room upstairs plays host to regular comedy nights and is available for hire for functions.

“Country Pub Atmosphere near to Heathrow.”
Reviewed 24 June 2014

This is the second time we have eaten at the Ostrich whilst staying in a hotel near to Heathrow because of a very early flight. Previously we had booked for the restaurant but this time we ate in the bar. Much more atmosphere in the bar and the same menu. Good choice of starters mains and desserts and those we had were well cooked. Mostly basic pub food but none the worse for that. I had one of their home made burgers with chunky chips and it was one of the best burgers I have had.
Definitely to be recommended but it can get busy even on a Monday night. Perhaps a reflection of the quality.
We didn't try the wine but there was a good choice of beers.

Took ages for our starters to arrive and there was hardly any meat on the ribs. The chips were overcooked - maybe we were too late (9pm) to get a good meal and service

“Ok food but history was great if macabre!”
Reviewed 28 May 2014 via mobile

So, this is worth the visit for sure if you're staying at the Hilton Terminal 5 on a Sunday. We wanted to try the hotel's award-winning Indian restaurant but, sadly, it's closed on Sundays. We decided to head to The Ostrich instead and had a good night. It was an easy walk from the hotel, taking you past some quaint old buildings and some less interesting modern ones, the staff was very friendly and the food was ok for the price but the experience as a whole made it pretty enjoyable. This is definitely not a gastropub you would go out of your way for - pretty standard pub food, we thought. We didn't mind the modern interior but there was no atmosphere - we were one of 4 tables in a large dining area, so it felt pretty empty. After the meal, the server took us on a tour and showed us where the infamous 17th century landlord and lady had put their "guests" the night before they murdered them in a horrific way .....our kids (teenagers - this might be rather much for the little guys!!) thought it was English history at its most interesting!!!
