“Pyne Bar food review only-no hotel stay”
Reviewed 23 October 2011

The Pyne Bar located in the hotel was recommended by the B&B we stayed in. It was a Monday night and we were seated quickly. My husband had the Green Prawn Curry (a lunch item but they let him order it for dinner) and I had the Lasagne and garlic bread. We both had date and walnut cake for dessert. Our meals were really good and we would eat there again! Total bill with drinks £42.70

Room Tip: The Pynes Bar has good food and is open to non residents.

We stayed at the Bedford Hotel recently and, although the location within Sidmouth is good, the hotel really needs updating and modernisation. The room and the en-suite felt kind of grubby and I wish we had stayed elsewhere. It was also way too expensive for what we received. Next time, the Victoria here we come.

I took 10 family and friends to Pyne's on the 5th Sep to celebrate my daughters 21st. It was one of the best meals we have had in a long time. The goats cheese salad starter was big enough to be a meal in its self. We were looked after very well and the staff were attentive and polite. All my guests were very happy with their meals which included whole lemon sole, liver, lamb and rib eye steaks which were all served with ample fresh veg. If you are in or near Sidmouth then you should add this restaurant to your list of places to visit.

If you're looking far a modern hotel with great facilities and uniformity then this hotel isn't for you. It's a bit old fashoned and quirky but my wife and I love hotels like this. It's got loads of character, the stairs are all over the place, the staff are great, views directly onto the esplanade/sea. We had a superior room with a sea view and then we moved to a room with a balcony. Food was good, excellent choice of beer plus we there was a Folk Festival on and loads of (folk) music and dancing in the hotel.
Wasn't cheap but we both enjoyed our stay.
Would recommend .

Room Tip: Both rooms had twin beds but we pushed them together.

As soon as we arrived in the car, staff came out to meet us and took our bags to reception and on to the room and were very welcoming. The room was on the 2nd floor with a balcony and was spacious light and airy. The bathroom is a bit dated but everthing was cleaned and tidied each day with towels changed and we understand there is a programme of renovation to be carried out. We found there was virtually no noise overnight either on the corridors or from seagulls/pigeons. On the Saturday night there was some noise from people on the street for a short period which didn't spoil our night at all.
Evening dinner was a suprise as we didn't expect 5 courses and was very good value, and the staff were very pleasant, polite and helpful. Breakfast was offered with many choices and hot food was served 'hot' to the table, very good as well.
For ourselves the location was perfect as the sea is only about 15 paces from the front of the hotel and the view are unsurpassed.
We will certainly be returning to stay again as soon as we can find time.

wont be going back there unless its knocked down & rebuilt, it looked to me this hotel inside and out hasent had a penny spent on it in some time, none of the floors are level seemed to me everywhere i walked in the hotel even in my room i felt like i was walking up hill everywhere, the room service was poor as they diddent change dirty bath towels that i had to put on the floor due to a water fountain coming out of the shower. shower gels & shampoo never got replaced, and as for the staff in the dinning room i asked for more bread rolls for the pensioners on my table and was told there was none left in the hotel now that i couldent believe & when it came to the veg it looked to me every think was measured per person, i felt sorry for all the oap"s who asked for more and got fobbed off every time but enjoyed watching me complaining every time on there behalf well im 40 years younger than them & couldent just sit back & watch how they was getting treated after paying all that money to stop there, and id just like to say the hotel is full of health and safety issues inside and out

Room Tip: room 16 over looks the back yard/kitchen area & as for the pigeons cooing all night long i was c...

The Bedford Hotel is a Grade II * listed building. It was once The Wallis Marine Library and Reading Rooms, which was one of the first Regency houses to be built on the seafront in Sidmouth. It became The Bedford Hotel by 1865, hence why some of the floors are not as level as a purpose built hotel.

During the winter of 2010 nearly every bedroom and most of the ground floor was re decorated.

Regarding the seagulls, it is common to hear seagulls in a seaside town like Sidmouth.

We do have bedrooms that do not over look the sea and this is clearly stated in our tariff as “standard inland facing”

Our food is freshly cooked and prepared, and we regret that on this occasion the customer felt that there were not enough vegetables, this is the first time that we have heard this and many of our customers feel that there are too many vegetables and do not like to see them wasted.

We are AA accredited with a merit score of 74%. We had a recent inspection on 15/06/2011, below are some of the comments of the report:

“Overall, this was a positive visit and it was pleasing to see the results of the on going investment with bedroom stock now much more unified in terms of quality and comfort”

“A number of bedrooms have benefited from refurbishment. Public areas have also been enhanced with lounge, dining room and corridors in very good order”

I used the Bedford for our annual Bee Farmers' Association convention (Friday afternoon to Monday morning). We filled it and overflowed into another nearby hotel, using the Bedford as base for food and meetings.
The hotel was comfortable and clean, food was good, and to top it all the bar was sensibly priced and had two local real ales on hand-pump. Everyone was very satisfied with the hotel, and the fact that the weather was lovely and the hotel right on the sea-front was a bonus.
The hotel booking system is not state-of-the-art which led to a couple of difficulties for me as organiser but they were ironed out without any problems.
A down-side is the parking which is expensive, although weekly tickets are available at the municipal long-stay car park. On-street parking is very limited in Sidmouth.

Looking at previous reviews I would make some observations:
Concerning the condition of the hotel - ignore any comments before 2011 as the rooms have been refurbished. None of my members complained on that score.
Fawlty Towers: I have to confess that the owner might give that impression at first but it is just her manner. Things did not go wrong, and I never saw her ranting at the staff!: In fact all the staff were friendly and helpful.
Price: it seemed about right to me, although for a take-over of the hotel in mid-March I obviously negotiated a better rate.
