We stayed for 2 nights in May 2014 and we welcomed by the friendly staff. The family room 6 we stayed in was clean, well laid out to accommodate the 5 of us and had a sea view.

Breakfast was extensive with cereal, yogurt, fresh pastries and a full cooked English. The fish and chips I had in the evening was enormous, fresh and good value for money.

Dukes is one of Sidmouth's little gems and comes highly recommended.

We booked the Dukes Hotel in Sidmouth online. Booking was easy and only a third of the cost was taken on our credit card.

They then collect whatever you owe when you leave.

The hotel is small with only 14 rooms. The hotel sits back from the sea front between another hotel and a row of shops and fish and chip shop leading to the small town. The car park only has room for about 10 family sized cars and is situated in front of the hotel next to the beer garden.

The garden itself is full of bench style picnic tables with umbrellas. It is widely used for food and those who just want a pint. The dining room is small and the small bar area is used for serving food. Because of this we felt like interlopers in the hotel as there is not room for a residents lounge.
Our room had a sea view and was reasonably well appointed, though a bit on the small side.

Overall our stay was pleasant; breakfast and service were very good. We only booked for one dinner on the Sunday that we arrived. This turned out to be a disaster. The waiting staff were new to the hotel. We each ordered different steaks from the menu and we each asked for some things to be left off. My wife asked what the vegetables were as she is allergic to some forms and very allergic to sauces and spices.

The meals arrived. The staff did not know which steaks were which, and when we pointed this out they returned to the kitchen for confirmation. Returning they assured us that the steaks we each got were correct. Mine came up with the things I had asked to be left out and my meal was returned to the kitchen. The plate came back minus the items I did not want. Then came my chips and I began to eat what had been presented. My wife’s meal came back from the kitchen with the steak, but had mushrooms she had not ordered, this was followed by the vegetables, carrots as promised, minus the peas that had been ordered plus broccoli which she is allergic to and had pointed out. Disappointed we began to eat our meal.

At this point the waitress asked how our meal was and we explained how disappointed we were. To her credit she went and got the duty manager to have a word with us. Explaining the things that were wrong she offered to replace our meals. We were already two thirds of the way through the food and could not have eaten a fresh meal. She then suggested that she would not charge for the meals, and we accepted her offer.

Having had a problem the staff took great pains to put it right, and we have to say that they should be complimented on their customer service. This meal was obviously not up to their normal service and they could not have apologised more.

We have visited Sidmouth on a few occasions when we had friends living there and we returned to what we know as a nice little seaside resort. Will we go back again, probably not, therefore we are unlikely to stay at the Dukes again, but overall we would probably say to friends that they should try it.

Thanks for the review but maybe you were expecting somewhere a little different when you booked with us, Dukes is an Inn, we are nether a hotel or a restaurant and try very hard to ensure all our marketing reflects this. We have a bar, patio area and a dining room and 14 rooms which we let for bed and breakfast.

I apologise for your dinner experience with us, we have recently had new staff start with us and although we have a very robust training policy, unfortunately mistakes do happen and we are really sorry this impacted on your evening - we hope the complimentary meal made up someway for your experience.

We are really pleased that your would recommend us to friends.

The only reason Dukes didn't score 5/5 is because they have some kind of 'filter' blocking access to any internet website that carries 18+ material. I can understand the reason for the censor, however, I happen to be aged 50+ and to be blocked from Paddy Power (my betting site) while a major horse racing meeting was taking place is a bit too much like Big Brother for my liking. There should be an 'opt out' option for people like myself who want to access 18+ sites - even Youtube is blocked! That said, the rest of the stay was fabulous. Checking in was quick and easy and staff very friendly. Our room (large, sea view) was great. Double and single bed, leather sofa and en suite. The view from the bay window overlooked the beer garden out to sea. only slight negative was that the TV was tiny and too far from the beds. If you wanted to watch anything you had to sit on the sofa. Bedding and beds were extremely comfortable and clean, and pillows to die for. There were a lot of little extras that weren't advertised, such as fleece blankets if it got cool in the beer garden and a hose pipe to wash off the seagull s**t from your car! Only a few allocated parking places - 1st come 1st serve, but parking on the sea front is totally free and unlimited. Dukes is situated in the perfect position to explore Sidmouth, but be aware that in May, nearly every chippy and restaurant is closed by 9.30pm. I would reccommend this hotel to anyone!

Staying in Sidmouth, visits to Dukes are a must. The outside patio is superb in the sun or the bar and conservatory in the cooler - wherever you are always greeted with a smile and superb service. The beers are good, well-kept and reasonably priced. Lunches are great value and excellent quality - for a light bit try the loaded nachos and share with your partner - be amazed if you can finish this platter and just £7. Scones are superb. This is a must go to and is dog-friendly - sometimes even they get a treat from the jar!

We've never been away for Christmas before but circumstances with elderly relative meant that we had to book two rooms at Dukes. I was not looking forward to being away from home over Christmas but was really pleased with the rooms and the meals over the holiday. Not much fun for the manager and staff, working long hours on Christmas and Boxing Day, but they all had happy faces and provided excellent service. Have been back since a couple of times for meals and never had any complaints. Would highly recommend Dukes.

Room Tip: Second floor sea view - lovely.

Went with a friend and we each had a lovely sea-view room. Breakfasts were great and so were the evening meals we had in the restaurant. Appears to be popular with the locals, so make sure you book your table early for both the Fish and Chip special on Tuesdays and the Steak Night special on Wednesdays.
Staff were all most friendly and helpful.
Would definitely go again

Room Tip: Room 14 was one of the largest with a lovely comfy sofa and a wonderful sea view.

We stayed last Saturday evening. Dukes has a lovely atmosphere and seemed to be used by locals as well as tourists which is always a good sign! We ate in the restaurant because everywhere else seemed quiet but glad we did. The food was lovely and service very good. Breakfast was super and the staff were without exception a credit to the place.

We enjoyed our stay and would recommend Dukes.

BUT AVOID ROOM 9.
Our room was fine, overlooking what appeared to be a quiet side street - BUT be warned as far as we could tell it is the only bedroom with windows that overlooked what appeared to transform into a rat run to what we discovered was the local night club - the noise was incredible even with the windows shut and went on until 4am.

I know the hotel has no control over outside noise but avoid ROOM 9 on a Saturday night or when the night club is open or take earplugs
