“Go there every year!”
Reviewed 7 February 2010

We love the Royal Glen and go at least once a year, they rooms and service have always been great although the food is not good, but most people go out to the lovely places to eat that surrond it. Just a short wlk down the hill to the beach and great views. Has a mini golf court. We have our teenage daughter and her 2 cousins and her friend. They love it!!! Lovely people. We always go to the Drawing room to plan the day ahead as it has a libary of leaflets. HEATED POOL IS GREAT!!!

We have just returned from a week in the Royal Glen hotel in sidmouth and have had a wonderful time. We stayed in one of the "named" rooms which opened out onto the patio and garden - it was wondeful. The charming regency hotel with history throughout is situated just 100 yards from the sea front yet far enough away to be quiet in the evenings - ideal for those of us who like an ealry night. The food is excellent and the kitchen catered for all our needs and the staff were very friendly and helpful. What more can I say - try it for yourself - its a unique experience - not your usual "box-type" rooms that you find in all the major hotel chains - this hotel has charm, warmth and is a place I will return to next year without hesitation.

We have just returned from a weekend break at the Royal Glen hotel, Sidmouth. After reading other reviews we were apprehensive at what we might find, especially considering the all in price of £264.00 for B+B for 2 nights (2 adults & 2 children). We were rather expecting a 'get what you pay for' experience considering some other hotels in Sidmouth are £350.00 per night!

What a nice place! It is clean, friendly, well decorated and well run. It has a family run feel about it, not the lifeless chain hotel atmosphere. The pool is very nice and we couldn't keep the kids out!

The breakfast may not be locally produced oganic fare (and all that waitrose-esque rubbish) but it is good and plenty of it, very good service in the dining room as well.

The place has a feel of history about it and the whole place is cosy and charming, narrow corridors, rich red hotel carpet and squeaky boards etc - we will stay again.

Either the place has been sorted out recently or there are some hard to please travellers out there, some of the other reviews are rather way off the mark. A nice hotel and very good value for money.

We had a weekend at this hotel but we were very disapointed our room had a bad smell of damp the furniture well worn and tatty it was also very dull and depressing.
The breakfast was average and not very worm, the tables were small not much room to put plates etc.

Staff were very friendly.

Our frends who also stayed there with us thought the same.

I think it is over priced for the standard.and I certainatly would not recomend this hotel.

This hotel needs a real face lift and its damp smells sorting out otherwise it will not attract younger and newer guests.

SORRY BUT THATS THE WAY IT IS

We have just returned from 5 days at the Royal Glen and find it hard to fault. The good points were the location - on the flat so ideal for the elderly yet in a quiet situation minutes from the front, superb staff, comfortable rooms with new bathrooms, very clean, very friendly. The not so good points were lumpy pillows but these were replaced on request. The one evening meal we had was OK but not as good as Neil's restaurant for much the same price. However breakfasts were excellent. If you want to stay somewhere different with period furniture, this is for you. Don't expect lifts and minibars!

We had a great weekend at the Glen a grade 1 listed building that has modern comforts and a lovely pool. I cannot believe the other comments I have read, the hotel entrance, bar, restaurant are all beautifully decorated and although the rooms do vary in size due to the old building they were nicely decorated too. The food was delicious all freshly cooked local produce and the staff all very friendly and helpful. We will definitely return and recommend the glen to others.

Booked there for 2 nights. On arrival we were shown to a dark, dank, damp, smelly hole that they called a bedroom. Wife's asthma immediately erupted. Asked for another room. No can do. Left immediately. And, yes, you guessed it, they charged us for the full stay. If you stay in this pit having read this site, you only have yourselves to blame. The very essence of everything that is wrong with British hotels and, yes, I'm British.
