A charming hotel with old-style service. We had an excellent room on the 3rd floor with sea view. Yes it is expensive compared to other 4* hotels, but this reflects the staffing levels. The food in the restaurant is top class (Service was excellent on the Friday although very slow on the Saturday). I don't mind the jacket and tie rule as this reflects the age profile of most of the guests (mostly 70+). The dinner dance on Saturday comprises a 4 piece band playing during dinner and then decamping to the lounge to play for the dancing (with the addition of a singer). Reasonably good size dance floor and a good variety of ballroom (waltz, quickstep, cha-cha, foxtrot etc). The band were accomplished and cheerful - a great night.

We also tried the outdoor putting, the full size snooker table and the small indoor pool and hot tub. Some of the guests we talked to were regular visitors - I'm still hungry to visit many new places, but perhaps when I'm 80 I will hanker for familiarity and certainty, rather than adventure.

Room Tip: Worth the extra for a front facing sea view room.

Having stayed several times before this hotel has maintained its excellent reputation.
Our room was a reasonable size with a sea view. Very clean, well furnished and excellent facilities. The food at breakfast and in the evening was superb and the music at dinner was a lovely extra.
One of the nicest things about the hotel was the friendliness of the staff.

Room Tip: Room with a balcony is great if you can afford it!

We booked this hotel because my mother-in-law wanted to come here, it was not somewhere we would have chosen. We prefer somewhere more casual (my husband certainly did not want to wear a jacket and tie for dinner, so we ate out). We booked a standard room, which was very expensive, but it did have a side sea view and small balcony (though the vents from the kitchen must have been below us, as there were always cooking smells). The rooms were comfortable, but the bathroom in the single room was dated. The staff were helpful and friendly and well trained and the hotel was well looked after; we noticed very thorough cleaning and repairs being carried out. The breakfast was a bit disappointing; there was nothing different on the menu, and the tableware was rather dated. There was nothing very wrong with it, but felt for the price it could have been better. In all a real throw-back to the 1960s.

Spent 5 nights in Sepotember 2012.

Booking using Secret Escapes and this resulted in a 20% discount.

We were allocated a smallish room overlooking the garden and with a side sea view.

Good points:

1 - Top quality service - staff were excellent and I hope they are well paid!
2 - Food - really excellent
3 - Jacket and tie required in the dining room for dinner - a refreshing change!
4 - The band playing for about 3 nights per week are first class
5 - Small but well maintained and clean bathroom

Not so good:

1 - Only a 4' 6" bed in a room costing £160 per night B&B and after 20% discount?
2 - The sheet and blanket arrangement was poor, but was changed with no problem for a duvet when we we requested this on day 2. Also nearly broke a toe trying to force off the heavy cover!
3 - The hotel web site does not make the type of room clear and the room we were allocated was not represented on the web site.
4 - That good food is quite expensive - bank on at least £100-£120 for 2 people in the dinign room for dinner.

Room Tip: Make sure you know what type of room you are paying for - it is not obvious on the web site!

The Victoria is a luxury hotel in a great location in Sidmouth. What makes it stand out though is the quality of service from the staff in all departments. The staff are obviously very well trained but their professionalism is very natural and unforced. The managers are also willing to help out with ordinary tasks so it looks like a good team effort. For a large hotel, the service is very personal. The rooms are very comfortable, the facilities are good , and the food is very good, so it's very hard to fault it.

My husband and I went to the Vicoria for the 4th year running in August 2012 and yet again we were not disappointed. The minute we walk into the hotel it is welcoming. The receptionists are all very polite and make you feel at home immediately. Our room had a balcony and seaview and was excellent. This time we went bed, breakfast and evening meal and were not disappointed with the meals in the restaurant in the evening. The food was excellent and there was a good choice. The staff were very attentive and couldn't do enough for us and we were allowed to take our time with our meal. The hotel was as always spotless throughout and all staff greeted us with a smile and hello at all times. To us this hotel should be rated as a 5 star - not 4 - as we have stayed in alot of 4 star and the Victoria is by far a better hotel. Congratulations to all the management and staff on a great hotel.

Room Tip: When booking try to ask for a seaview as you won't be disappointed.
