The ambience, service and rooms are all well above average with the staff always eager to help. A real old fashioned service which is often missing these days. On our stay we were in a room at the rear of the hotel; well furnished and decorated but watch out for deliveries from 6am. We took super in the bar - fish platter - plenty but if not for home made pickle it would have been tasteless.
Not put off we returned recently for a dinner but such a disappointment and expensive. Chicken liver parfait was tasteless while the sole was so over salted that you couldn't taste the fish. I don't think we will try again as at nearly £90 for two courses and drinks for two it is an expensive night out.A great pity as the staff do try hard

Having first stayed at the Victoria Hotel over twenty years ago and many visits since, it really does feel like going home to family. It has changed (what hasn’t) but to a very small degree. Owners and senior management have retained and even refined that special magic which makes this hotel very special. So many of the staff have been there for years, and like all of us getting older. But it is so nice to get the genuinely sincere welcome back. Cliff the Head Porter, Richard the Head Barman, Ben the Head Waiter and even Ian the rather exocentric night porter (now with splendid handle bar moustache) have all been the family at the Vic for years. With senior management also long standing with handshakes and welcome back by name, this really is a great hotel.
Decorated superbly for Christmas the warmth of the lounges complements the friendly welcome and desire to please of the staff. Our room was superb with splendid sea view and the fact the weather was kind and sun shone all made for another magical visit (after three year gap) to our favourite hotel. Fresh milk for tea in our room was delivered promptly, room service Saturday afternoon while watching the sport with wife out shopping, was with me in minutes.
Nothing was too much trouble throughout entire weekend.
Food in the Victoria Restaurant was always good, with a five course table d’hôte menu. Memory says we always left the table fit to burst. This visit that wasn’t the case, but each course was more than sufficient, excellent and full of flavours and quality. With a marvellous wine list we had two nights of gastronomic excellence. Our servers Mikus from Latvia and Clara from Paris (on a catering exchange visit) were very attentive without being over bearing. Seeing them last thing at night and again for an excellent breakfast reminded me what long “anti social” hours the catering business is.
So many of the guests are regulars who appreciate and enjoy the quality hotel break that the Victoria and its excellent staff always give. A lovely touch on Sunday lunchtime was a local choir was engaged to sing carols and other nice songs. This was not for commercial gain, nor going to increase takings – Sunday lunch was probably sold out anyway, but it was just a lovely touch to add even more to the festive spirit.

The Victoria has an old fashioned elegance and feeling of past better times that I am too young to even remember. You don’t find that at the modern chain breeze block hotels. In a fantastic location overlooking the sea with great staff, wonderful cuisine in the lovely little town of Sidmouth – a visit here is worth every penny!

There is nothing as constant as change but we hope the Victoria stays serene and does not alter one little jot!

If you get the impression I like the place then dear reader you are spot on!

We stayed Friday /Sat & Sun 6th / 7th & 8th December 2013

Room Tip: Has to be front sea view.

My wife and I first visited the Victoria some 30 years ago as our Honeymoon destination. We have returned here on a number of occasions to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, or just to get away from the drudgery of day to day life. On this occasion it was our 30 wedding Anniversary and we were looking for a most special and romantic interlude. We were not disappointed. From the complementary flowers with a personal note of congratulations welcoming us back, to the luxurious appointment of our deluxe room, trimmed with every modern convenience including free wifi.

The main reason we return to the Victoria though is its character, its formal yet warm friendly nature that says ‘hello, you are special to us’ from the moment the uniformed Doorman opens your car door and arranges for a Bellhop to transfer your bags to your room, to the way you are booked in with the minimum of fuss by a polite Receptionist who is more interested in you than her twitter account.

The decor of the hotel is in the Victorian manner and is the epitome of style and tasteful grandeur with oak panelled walls, high roof lines, tasteful wall trimmings and furniture. Comfy settees and chairs are ready to ease hours away over a cream tea, or an after dinner coffee or nightcap. The main foyer, lounge and bar are so inviting and comfortable you feel you could spend days in them without wanting to go any further. It is even an uncommon pleasure to walk down all three fight of the very grand main stair case.

Special note should be made of the excellent Staff, exponents of that most difficult of skills, a friendly but respectful rapport with the paying customer. They seem to appreciate that you have indeed paid a premium price for a premium service and all that entails. From the attentive Duty Manager who is sympathetically dealing with your comments on any issues, however minor, the Lounge waiters who magically appear with coffee and chocolates after dinner, the attentive Restaurant staff who never let an empty plate linger during a meal and never let a draw bang shut at their Stations lest they disturb the diners, to the Room Service that seem to be invisible yet still turn a dishevelled room into the picture of perfection each day.

The food of the Restaurant, accompanied by tasteful live music, is excellent, with special mention of the deserts! A comprehensive wine list is available to complement the most appetizing food. Which brings me to the only individual we have learnt the name of, he is simply known as ‘Ben’.

Ben was our wine waiter all those thirty years ago, and has now progressed to Maître d’ (we think) His knowledge of appropriate wines for your meals is superb and makes each meeting an occasion. Ben symbolises the longevity of the Victoria, it is reassuring to know that there will always be a place that seems to cherish memories, standards, and loyalty whilst providing up to the minute facilities and refinements.

A small note on Sidmouth, a haven of charm and friendliness with its gear stick left in neutral, a real ‘unplug’ from brash modern towns full of multi-national shopping chains and ruined buildings. What you get is a gentle town full of small privately owned local shops where everyone seems to have time to stop and share a few moments over fantastic local food and drink. The Promenade is a joy, wide, clean and unspoilt.

For our part, may the Victoria forever keep her character and her dignity and not get over taken buy some of the excesses and style fads of the modern world, where quantity seem to preside over quality. Its not the cheapest hotel in the UK, but we dont want cheap, we want quality, and quality is what this hotel has by the truck load. I paid the bill and felt well satisfied. already looking forward to our next visit.

So hats off to the Brend Family who run this impressive chain of retreats form the ‘Mach 2’ modern world, “long live the queen” (Victoria).

Room Tip: Ask for sea view, though a partial sea view is still very much worth having.

Very happy with our visit and the great service . We visited with a group of 6 friends for my wife's 50 the birthday. A special mention to George , a waiter, who was lovely! The people make the place! Located close to the Donkey Sanctuary

Room Tip: Try and get room 109a where our friends lord and lady Roberts of The Naite stayed!

I stayed here for a few days and experienced excellent food and drink in first class surroundings as well as good service from every department of the establishment. I have been before and will be back.

Room Tip: Go for a sea view, it is worth it. Beautiful.

This is an old and comparatively expensive hotel owned by a large Group in the South West.
We stayed for three nights, coming home today21/11/2013.
We had a "deal" and spent nearly eight hundred pounds as breakfast and the table d'hote dinner menu was included with a pleasant room. We drank wines to match the menu choices - reasonably priced.
There are a number of very long serving staff and the skills have been passed on successfully in many instances.
The hotel is decorated beautifully for Christmas and housekeeping is good and thorough.
With all the work in training and encouragement to get the best standards from a range of personalities it is disappointing to feel obliged to complain about the welcome and the farewell....

The reception office is divided by a glass partition and if the desk is not at first occupied one is looked at through the glass by a member of staff. The feeling is not hostility but one of awkwardness. The reception and booking in needs a lot of attention -although we were not made to feel unwelcome.

However, the departure was casual in the extreme and it took fifteen minutes for my bags to be brought down.

There were many conversations taking place between staff, across the reception desk, during our stay. This is not good manners .

It is an old hotel and has a great reputation - the owners and the managers should already know that the most vulnerable time for the hotel - in the perception of the guest -is arriving and leaving (particularly if it is possible to ruin the effect of excellent breakfast service.)

The Carlyon Bay Hotel is owned by the same Group and we would hope to encounter better circumstances there when we visit soon

Room Tip: there are many seaviews all around the building.
