We wanted to go away for a few days at short notice and decided to give Sidmouth a shot. I have not been to Sidmouth for at least 15 years but remember the place fondly from taking my aged uncle and aunt for tea at either the Victoria or Riviera hotels. We decided on a late availability booking at the Victoria and ended up with a good deal on the Victoria Suite on a DBB basis.

The hotel is very well appointed and comfortable with spacious and grand, well-furnished public rooms, bar and dining room. Our suite was on the ground floor and exceptionally spacious - in fact it had an additional bedroom which we did not need - with a large bedroom, large sitting room and kitchenette, and bathroom (with two basins, bath and separate large shower). The promised sea view was across the side lawn and main entrance area which was not quite what I had envisaged but a good sea view nonetheless. I suspect the view from rooms on higher floors would be splendid.

Breakfast and dinner were great successes, both served in the Jubilee Restaurant. The breakfast buffet of cereals, fruit, yogurts, cold meats and pastries etc was augmented by a wide choice of cooked items, from the 'full cholesterol' to kippers and poached haddock. Dinner was a five-course table d'hôte affair with a decent choice for each course. Alternative courses could be ordered from the a la carte menu at a supplement. I suppose I had been expecting the usual seaside hotel-type of food and service, and was therefore very impressed when in fact the food was a more sophisticated fine dining style. All the food we ate was well prepared and delicious, from meltingly tender beef carpaccio to perfectly cooked sea bass, rich and succulent haunch of venison to well-choses local cheeses. The wine list was limited, but with a good spread of types at reasonable cost. All meals were served by the excellent staff, relaxed, efficient and welcoming. In fact, all the hotel staff, from receptionists to the bar team were notable for their friendly welcome and attentive service.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable short stay and look forward to not waiting another 15 years to return.

Room Tip: The Victoria Suite is very spacious and comfortable with huge sitting room, two bedrooms, bathroom and spacious hallway. It also has a 'private' terrace. However, it does look over the main entrance and driveway so may not be to everyone's taste.

I have just celebrated a weekend with family and friends and it was the staff from the area director, the functions manager and all the staff that contributed to make this a celebration I will never forget. The staff went over and above the call of duty nothing was too much trouble. The food as always was excellent. I have stayed at the Victoria a few times in the last few years and the standard has always been high. Thank you to you all I look forward to staying again in the near future.

Room Tip: All rooms of excellent standard. You may not be able to afford a sea view room but even staying at the back of the hotel there are views over the outdoor facilities.

Thank you for your review for the Victoria Hotel after your recent stay with us. It was most pleasing to read that your celebratory birthday weekend was a success and that we were able to provide our usual high standards of customer service for yourself and your family.

I have passed on your comments to all the staff and they were delighted to read them. It is always very rewarding for them and they, along with myself, look forward to welcoming you back to the Victoria Hotel in the near future. Thank you again for taking the time to write your review.

We came as the hotel offered both a spa and afternoon tea and weren't disappointed. From the moment we drove into the beautiful town of Sidmouth we knew this was a good choice. Turning up into the drive was like stepping back in history for all the right reasons. We were met by a wonderfully helpful doorman in full livery. He helped us park the car and made us welcome. The room was delightful - a little hot but perfect. The bed super comfortable. Afternoon tea on the terrace was full of Victorian charm and, not wishing to dress for diner, enjoyed a delicious meal in the lounge. The spa is nicely sized and subtle - ideal for quiet relaxation rather than the unnecessary show of some. Breakfast was tasty and well presented and the staff are helpful. The town itself is perfect for a quiet break. Recommend!

Great location, plenty of attentive friendly staff and a very well run hotel, clearly with a great team in place.
Lovely position and such a relaxing atmosphere.
Have stayed a few times now and personally wouldn't waste our time looking elsewhere when in Sidmouth

This hotel is very overpriced considering what it has to offer. £204 a night for a pokey little room is extortionate. It was also extremely hot, although we had the windows open, and we had difficulty sleeping. The dinner we had in the restaurant was very disappointing. My husband and I paid over £100 for a 3 course meal with wine. We wouldn't have minded the cost if the meal had been special as it was a birthday treat but it was sadly lacking. The starter was a few measly pieces of cheese on a mottley collection of salad leaves. For the main course we had guinea fowl which was tough and very dry. None of the desserts on offer appealed to us so we ended up having 2 scoops of very mediocre ice cream. Not worthy of an AA Rosette by any stretch of the imagination.
