Standard pub food. Standard pub ambiance. Not the best place in Sidmouth to be honest. The public bar faces onto the street and one has to weave through people having a smoke on the pavement.

Pleased to see that they had a selection of real ale such as Otter,Doombar & Tribute and Stowford press & Thatchers gold for the Wife and the menu looked inviting with a specials board to complement it.
I had the pasta bolognese from the specials board and my wife had home made salmon and prawn fishcakes from the menu which came to £ 17
When it arrived the portion was not to big and it was well cooked and tasty,my wife particularity enjoyed her meal especially the potatoes and dip.
The Black horse has a bar area at the back but is mainly a gastro type pub although it also has live music so well worth a visit if in Sidmouth.

One side of the building is the bar and at the other is a very large restaurant area. The bar is nothing special but OK for a drink. The restaurant is well fitted out and clean. Beer and food prices are on the high side. Staff are friendly and service is good. Food is OK. The Black Horse Inn did not quite click with us, not sure why. Perhaps the restaurant area lacked atmosphere and the pub feel was missing. We called early evening and it was not very busy, which may have been the problem. That said it does appear to get quite busy at times so a lot of people must like it.

We ate here on a Sunday evening having popped in during the day to make sure they were still serving food. The pub has two entrances one side the public bar and on the other the restaurant which has two levels. The menu was normal pub food with a good variety at reasonable prices. you order at the bar and the food is brought to your table. The staff were very good though a bit stressed as the restaurant was busy and so was the public bar as there was a karaoke evening in full swing!! We ordered scampi and chips and liver, bacon and onions with mashed potato, huge portions which went down well! We ordered cheese and biscuits which didn't arrive until my husband enquired and then the chef brought it to us with many apologies - we asked for more biscuits as there was loads of cheese and only 4 biscuits!! The stilton was amazing but the chedder and brie just normal but we didn't expect anything amazing for less than £5. All in all would recommend particularly if you have kids.
