“Decent pub food”
Reviewed 4 May 2013

There was a warm atmosphere and a large party was clearly having an enjoyable lunch. That did not affect the service, which was helpful and friendly. The reviews had suggested that we might get more of a "gastro pub" experience, and so perhaps we felt that the food was good but not exciting. That said, it was a very pleasant visit - and we enjoyed a good pub lunch.

“A must...”
Reviewed 20 January 2013 via mobile

Visited The Golden Lion in Tipton St. John today with my partner and 3 month old son.
Firstly the greeting was warm and friendly from all of the staff, we were taken to a nice table in the family area, which as far as family areas go is very nice also!
I had the smoked trout pate starter which was exceptional. Very simple, homemade, and light to eat.
Followed by the main courses; Braised pheasant for myself and chicken in a creamy leek sauce for my partner which were both also delicious, served with roast potatoes, vegetables and cauliflower cheese.
(If i was going to be incredibly picky the pheasant was perhaps a little dry. However, I generally eat meat very rare so this is definitely more of a preference then a complaint.)
We had a slight mis-hap involving a glass of wine which the waitress accidentally knocked but she dealt so well with it that we were both impressed.
For dessert we shared a creme brûlée which was again very good.

If you are in the area then The Golden Lion is a fantastic spot for lunch.
We will definitely be visiting again soon.
Great Job Guys.

“A proper pub with good ales and good food”
Reviewed 18 January 2013

I was heartened to find that although it is very popular for its food, it remains a proper pub and not transformed into a restaurant with a bar. One bar is dedicated as a restaurant, while the other is a bar (with a good selection of ales) in which to drink but in which you can eat if you choose. To my mind this is the way pubs should be.

The menu is varied and interesting, with a French influence as the owner is French and a chef (I gather that at one time he used to do the cooking, but now is on hand in the bar, greeting, serving and ensuring that people are happy, which he does very efficiently). The lady behind the bar (who I took to be the owners wife) was also welcoming, friendly and efficient.

We ate in the bar area, where a table was quickly laid up for us. The prices are a little above pub average, but then again we found the food to be above average for a pub. The lamb shank was good, in a thick, rich (although slightly salty) gravy, and the pheasant was also excellent. It’s a bit off the beaten track, so would not get much by way of passing trade, so the fact that it was full is a good testament to its standards.
