I booked this for a birthday treat, so my hopes were perhaps higher than normal. The pub has a good location and I imagine that the outside areas are good in summer. Inside the decoration is fine, and the service is fast. I thought the prices a bit on the high side for a fairly basic standard of fare. We ordered calamari and whitebait for starters, and these arrived a bit too promptly - presumably out of a packet. They also came with the ubiquitous salad mix that seems to garnish everything. I have to say that the taste was fine, but nothing outstanding. The portions were large. We then had crab (served with a rather overpowering Mary Rose sauce, which they changed on request), and cod and chips (both with the same salad garnish). The chips were very uniform and small - again, presumably from a packet.
I can't complain about the taste - it was fine, but there was no apparent effort to match the high price for standard offerings. Had a good bottle of white Rioja at the usual pub mark-up.
Personally, I wouldn't visit again in a hurry, but for people who want a consistent meal, of limited choice, in a nice atmosphere and with good service, it will fill the bill.
