The restaurant came highly recommended by local people and so we went during our stay in Devon.
Unfortunatly we were disappointed.
We ordered lobster, which we were told was sourced locally and fish. What shall I say? The half lobster that arrived was nicely presented, but it was like rubber and did not taste like lobster at all. My husbands fish was overcooked as well. Vegetables were okay. The desserts were average, the prices rather on the high side.
Not the best experience we ever had, though staff were friendly and the service efficient - that saved them from getting just one point.

I booked this for a birthday treat, so my hopes were perhaps higher than normal. The pub has a good location and I imagine that the outside areas are good in summer. Inside the decoration is fine, and the service is fast. I thought the prices a bit on the high side for a fairly basic standard of fare. We ordered calamari and whitebait for starters, and these arrived a bit too promptly - presumably out of a packet. They also came with the ubiquitous salad mix that seems to garnish everything. I have to say that the taste was fine, but nothing outstanding. The portions were large. We then had crab (served with a rather overpowering Mary Rose sauce, which they changed on request), and cod and chips (both with the same salad garnish). The chips were very uniform and small - again, presumably from a packet.
I can't complain about the taste - it was fine, but there was no apparent effort to match the high price for standard offerings. Had a good bottle of white Rioja at the usual pub mark-up.
Personally, I wouldn't visit again in a hurry, but for people who want a consistent meal, of limited choice, in a nice atmosphere and with good service, it will fill the bill.

Living fairly local we have eaten here on may occasions and we are always satisfied with the consistently good food and friendly atmosphere. My only wish would be that they vary the menu from time to time because after numerous visits it all become a bit 'samey'.

We were invited to join a group of friends and were a little wary after reading some of the reviews but we were very pleasantly surprised. The place was very busy and get the staff coped very, very well almost to the point as if we were the only party of 8 in the restaurant. Food was excellent we had steaks, moules, lamb and chicken - everything cooked and served perfectly and the desserts were amazing - hot cherries and ice cream, treacle tart. Everything perfect, company, staff, food, atmosphere. Lovely outside seating area near a brook - wonderful for a lovely summer evening. Hope to go back again.

Having passed this establishment on numerous occasions and not gone in as it looked a little 'clinical' from the outside we were very pleased to have finally popped in for a drink...what a fabulous pub/restaurant, everything is absolutely perfect from the decor to the food, an absolute home from home.

We now use the pub most days, finally managing to book a table for Saturday..(the restaurants were fully booked even weekdays and heaving, and what nice people) we had a great meal despite being fully booked with many large tables all walking in together, everything ran like clockwork.

If you are looking for a perfect pub/restaurant then do try the Golden Lion, it really is something special compared with other establishments perporting to be pubs!

For real ale fans you can enjoy a nicely kept pint of Bass amongst other casks.

And it takes a Frenchman to show us how to run a 'Quintessential English Pub'..well done Franky and his team.
