Owner description: Set along the historic Jurassic Coast and nestled in the tranquil East Devon countryside in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, our working farm is home to donkeys, mules and hinnies - large and small. Come and say hello to some of the hundreds of donkeys waiting to meet you. There is also the exciting new Understanding Donkeys Zone and Dr Svendsen’s Writing Hut to explore, as well as guided walks, meet the groom sessions twice daily, the Nature Centre, the Maze to lose yourself in and a range of souvenirs to browse in the Gift Shop. When it’s time to take a well-earned break, the Sanctuary’s new family-friendly restaurant, The Kitchen, provides local, ethically sourced food alongside spectacular views over the donkeys paddocks out to the sea. Open 9am - 5pm, daily. The Donkey Sanctuary was founded as a charity in 1969, by Dr Elisabeth Svendsen MBE. Open 365 days a year; entry and parking is free. Dogs on a lead are welcome.

What a beautiful, peaceful place to visit - recommend it to everyone. Free entry, no car parking charge, gift shop and cafe. Doing such good work to look after the donkeys which are lovely.

There's also a maze and the Sanctuary is well worth a visit.

We loved the whole experience of the Donkey Sanctuary. The gift shop was reasonably priced and I bought quite a few gifts. The walk around the fields was really nice and the donkeys looked very well cared for. The restaurant was lovely and clean and the food delicious. We had a great day out.

If staying in Sidmouth the council provide a frequent small bus to and fro to the Sanctuary. It is a free service. Besides a very large number of donkeys, there is a shop, excellent cafe, video room, places to cuddle and make a fuss of a live donkey.Entrance to the Sanctuary is free
