“No longer allowed in courtyard”
Reviewed 25 July 2014

A warning to visitors that throughout the summer you will be expected to pay £3 to groom a donkey if you want to go into the courtyard area. You can still stroll through the fields, even as far as the beach if energetic, walk the maze and eat in the cafe but one of the pleasures of a visit is no longer available for free.

“This is a sanctuary not a funfair. Free to get in :)”
Reviewed 25 July 2014

Firstly the Donkey Sanctuary is free to get in, so is the car parking. The sanctuary is home to many many donkeys who for one reason or another have ended up here. I went with an equine expert and she felt they were extremely well cared for. There are plenty of opportunities to pat or stroke a donkey which is great for little people right through to the elderly in their mobility scooters, which must be great therapy for those who are suffering a bit. The donkeys are a friendly bunch who enjoy the attention, but please dont feed them.

There are facilities to eat. I noticed someone here complained about the price of food! Get over it, you dont have to buy it, in fact there are picnic areas for people to sit and eat their packed lunches! Its a free attraction! Others seem to moan that there are no donkey rides. This is a sanctuary not a funfair! Its rare these days to visit an 'attraction' for free. So why not support the work being done and pop along for an hour or 2.

Reviewed 24 July 2014

the donkeys themselves were gorgeous and the visitors' centre and cafe were good. Sidmouth Hopper bus was very uncomfortable.

“Sad but Rewarding”
Reviewed 23 July 2014

By not charging an admission price the Sanctuary is able to encourage visitors to show how friendly and loving the donkeys are, and how they should never be abused.
