“Fabulous Hotel with exceptional food and staff”
Reviewed 1 March 2011

The hotel exceeded our expectations on every level. The room was very comfortable and well appointed. The staff excellent and nothing was too much trouble. The location is fantastic with great views over the ocean. Would definitely recommend especially out of season

We spent 3 nights and were pleased with the location and the service from the restaurant and reception staff, however our room was not clean upon arrival and the toilet seat had urine on it! These problems were resolved and the staff apologetic. Housekeeping standards did not improve and the general cleanliness of the public areas could definitely be improved.
The hotel is more "tired" than you are led to believe from viewing the website - our room decor could not have been more different from the illustrations shown.

An alarm rang in my head as soon as the receptionist gave us directions to our room. 'Turn right at the kitchens, go past the toilets and you'll find it on the left.' At the kitchen entrance, the soft cream carpet of the public areas finished abruptly in a grubby No Mans Land strip, beyond which the elegant smooth-plastered walls with architectural mouldings gave way to painted anaglypta and exposed pipework.

We trundled on. After all, had we not chosen the hotel based on the content of its website? Had not the website gushed about the quality of its accommodation, with all rooms ‘decorated in a simple yet elegant way with tasteful soft furnishings to ensure you have a comfortable stay.' Had it not promised that ‘Here at the Sidmouth Harbour Hotel we take pride in all our rooms, they are all unique and many of them above the three star quality'.

Well, it told the truth about one thing. Room 43 is certainly unique – in a 1970s bedsit kind of way. For a start, it is cavernous, far too big for the small arthritic radiator hiding in one corner. For some inexplicable reason (cost?) this lone radiator switched off during the day, despite the outside temperature being barely above freezing. This meant that the room was an icebox. We draped blankets over the window ledges to cut down the draught but it took two space heaters on full power to keep that room warm throughout the night.

As for the decoration, I would guess the rooms beyond the kitchen were originally staff quarters, tarted up to make extra revenue. But instead of doing it properly, they have bodged it. Woodchip wallpaper on the ceiling, concrete-effect anaglypta on the walls, flimsy net curtains at the windows. Add to that some more exposed pipework (see picture), some flatpack furniture, and an ancient tube television and you have a room that is supposedly fit for paying guests.

Except that it isn’t. Not by a long chalk.

The bathroom fittings are good but I gave up trying to shower because the room was as draughty as a street corner. The tiles on the floor are the kind shops use in their entrances to stop customers slipping in wet weather. However, they’re too textured to be hygienic and it you are ever foolish enough to stay in Room 43 you might want to bring along some rubber verruca socks to avoid nasty surprises on your return home.

I don't like to accuse any organisation of deliberating misleading potential customers. Perhaps Harbour Hotels genuinely believe that disabled guests – who are most likely to request a downstairs room – do not care about aesthetics. Perhaps they think it doesn’t matter, that such people should just be grateful to get a room with handrails in the bathroom. What does matter, however, is the Trades Descriptions Act. If you boast – as the Westcliff does – that many rooms are above 3-star quality, you are obliged to reveal that some are below it. The Westcliff might argue that Room 43 is OK in summer when the weather is warm. This is irrelevant. If it chooses to offer sub-standard accommodation – and this is the only room we were offered at the time of booking – it should declare it upfront.

We made a last minute booking which was handled clearly and concisely. Upon arrival we were welcomed by a number of the staff in a cheerful and informative manner. The hotel was warm ( perhaps a little too warm) and clean. The food was very good as was the service. The guests were of a mature age but then the ambience was relaxing and high standards were maintained. Value for money was unparalleled. Would we stay again? Most definitely.

Stayed here for long weekend break. Best price was by booking direct with Harbour Hotels. £50 cheaper than booking.com etc. Good location in lovely town of Sidmouth. Room12 was a good size but slightly let down by bathroom being in need of some t.l.c.
Paint needed retouching, hair in sink plughole. Some marks on one of my pillows and a bloodstain on the runner at bottom of bed. Staff very polite and attentive. Only major problem was the level of heating in the lounge and restaraunt areas, it was uncomfortably hot for us. I know Sidmouth tends to cater for the more elderly end of the spectrum but surely they can't all be hot house flowers. We were very tempted to go down to breakfast in swimsuits the heating was turned up so high however, the breakfast itself was very good with a good choice of cooked to order and buffet food. Fortunately the temperature in our bedroom was fine and the bed was very comfortable.

This is a very comfortable well furnished clean hotel, in a perfect locations close to the town centre, gardens and promenade. The hotel is in a prime position and offers beautiful views of the sea. Our sea view room (25) was clean, and provided plenty of storage space and everything you need in the bathroom. The staff were friendly and attentive and worked very well as a team. While the food was of a good and we eat in the hotel during restaurant, although the menu was somewhat repetitiveve during our 3 night stay.

It was difficult to find anything out of place or unacceptable at The Westcliffe and we would stay again. The free on site parking was a bonus so close to the town centre and seafront.

Having read some of the reviews, I was a little apprehensive as I am in my early 40s taking my 78 year old Aunt for a 4 night break in Sidmouth. I need not have worried! We had a twin room, spacious, very clean on arrival & kept that way throughout our break. The hotel is brilliantly located - within a leisurely 5 minutes walk to the centre of Sidmouth and is right opposite the beautiful Connaught gardens with steps down to the pebble beach. We stayed on a B&B basis with the breakfast being a buffet with the usual cereals, fruit, yoghurts, pastries etc plus the staff taking your order for cooked breakfast. Excellent food & service. We had various snacks on the sun terrace, again very good service & reasonable hotel prices. We had our Saturday evening meal in the restaurant, a 3 course meal for £25 a head. Very good food and the usual excellent service.
The hotel is obviosly very popular with the older generation - many seem to return year after year but I loved the civilised feel & the charm of it - I wish more hotels where like it! I don't think it would be suitable for boisterous children, but I intend to return with my husband. Can't wait!
