“Belmont Hotel”
Reviewed 2 March 2013

The Belmont Hotel is a clean and tidy hotel with fantastic views. The staff are friendly and efficient. Dressing for dinner adds to the sense of occasion and complements the care taken with the preparation and serving of meals. The pianist also adds that "special something". The ambiance of the hotel manages to blend the Regency atmosphere of Sidmouth with modern convenience.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are best but others have interesting views.

The Belmont Hotel is ideally situated, just yards from the sea on Sidmouths' waterfront. It's reputation as one of the Brend group, goes before it. Staff are trained to an extremely high standard, fittings and furnishings superb.
The pianist in the dining room on Saturday night was spellbinding, I'd have paid to see him in concert. He turned a meal into an occasion.
The menu, as always at Brend Hotels was extensive, varied and plentiful.
Use of the pool and spa facilities at their sister hotel next door was beneficial.
There were a few downfalls however. To suit the majority of the clientele, the heating was rather overbearing.

Room Tip: The double room bed was too small, especially if one likes ones own space. It would be wise to reque...

Having become somewhat disenchanted with the food at our usual hotel, we booked a 4-night stay at the Belmont. We had dined there on a previous occasion and been extremely impressed with both the quality of food and the superb service, and so we booked a short stay in early January.
We had only requested a standard room, but were delighted to be allocated room 201, which was large, bright and overlooked the beautifully maintained gardens. This was greatly appreciated.
From the start, we were impressed with the helpful and friendly demeanour of every member of staff, who without exception genuinely seemed to love working there. Our luggage was speedily delivered to our room, and within minutes, the Receptionist had rung to check that all was in order with our room....it was!
Prior to dinner, we settled down in the bar to peruse the menu, which offered a super choice. We were particularly pleased to note that instead of the all-too-common easy option of 'panache of vegetables' there was a selection of separate vegetables offered - each interestingly prepared in its own right.
What we really loved, apart from the divinely delicious food, was the fact that, in this Hotel, silver service is alive and well. In too many establishments one is expected to serve one's own vegetables, and no matter how you try, it's not possible to match the expertise of a highly skilled Waiter!
Everything was piping hot, and interesting flavours complemented each other in every course - there are five of them!
The following morning, as we entered the Restaurant, the Waiter remembered which table was 'ours' and moved it away from the wall for us to settle ourselves. Impressive! Breakfast is also fully served - even the fruit juice. This makes SUCH a refreshing change and provides a relaxing start to the day. No queuing at a buffet. Yes!
So - a beautiful hotel, in a prime sea-front position, with excellent food, rooms and service and a happy, committed staff. Will we be back? - Certainly!

We spent a week at the Belmont over New Year. This hotel manages to retain standards and service unlike any we have encountered for many years.
.From the moment we arrived and until we left the staff were all pleasant, friendly and efficient without being overbearing. Our room was well appointed and spotlessly clean (210). We had flowers, fruit and bottled water as well as bathrobes and slippers.
Breakfast is a delight. No wandering around fighting for the orange juice or cornflakes. Everything is brought on request. The menu is extensive and includes haddock, kippers and porridge.
Dinner is similarly enjoyable with 5 courses and coffee and mints included which is often an annoying extra expense at the end of a meal. There is also a napkin wrapped dish of warm Melba toast on the table - something I have not seen for years.
The New Year festivities included dancing on New Year's Eve to a couple of guitarists and a drummer. The music was mostly 60s but this was exactly what was wanted! On New Year's Day there was a putting competion on the putting green outside the hotel and a Casino evening which was good fun.
The hotel next door to the Belmont belongs to the same chain and we were able to use the swimming pool and snooker table there free of charge.
The Belmont's manager, Timothy Beauchamp is an inspiration to his staff. Unlike most hotel managers he does not lurk in his office waiting to face complaints but he is prepared to put his hand to almost anything. We saw him serving at tables, clearing up plates, acting as chauffeur in the hotel car, chatting to the gardener, meeting and greeting guests as well as coping with the every day problems of running a hotel.
Yes, the clientele are older but how pleasant it was to see people well-dressed for dinner, hear no mobiles ringing and experience some old fashioned but sadly missed courtesy between guests and staff alike.
We will return.

Room Tip: Choose aroom with a sea view. Well worth the extra.

In our last review of the Belmont, I said we'd return and a special birthday a week or so before Christmas gave us just that opportunity, only a few months after our last visit..

This time it was just the two of us (before we had been with a party) but it was just as enjoyable. Of course it was not as full as in the Summer but there was still a very nice atmosphere and the excellent staff managed to maintain the excellent balance between efficiency and friendliness.

The weather could have been better but at least we had one decent day to further explore the Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth and nearby Lyme Regis. Otherwise, for the other three days it was heavy rain most of the time but the hotel lounges and our excellent bedroom were warm and welcoming. The food, as before, was excellent and beautifully presented and served - our only gripe was that the weather didn't really give us an opportunity to walk it off! It's nice too to find that the sweet trolley lives on so you can see exactly what is on offer before making your choice.

I don't think I mentioned before the really good breakfasts. It's nice to find a hotel that will serve breakfast at your table without expecting guests to wander round the restaurant searching for what you want. In my experience it takes at least three or four days to get it all sussed, not to mention all your fellow guests breathing (or even worse) over everything and sometimes touching it too. The Belmont serves everything at the table, even including fruit juice. and of course the cooked part is made to order rather than sitting under a lamp for goodness knows how long so it becomes congealed and unappetising.

We will be back again to experience this excellent hotel which provides a level of service whch. sadly, is very much the exception these days.

Arrived on a Monday afternoon to find the hotel buzzing with local people lunching. Doorman quickly and helpfully assisted me to park. Staff gave very attentive service. Bathroom could have been a bit bigger but the bed was extremely comfortable. Food could have been a bit more exciting but in general good. We enjoyed coming back and will return again.
