I have stayed at many hotels around the world when travelling on business. Generally the chain hotels are quite good but without a soul, whilst the private ones show their lack of top class professionalism, which is only sometimes made up for by amateur enthusiasm. Perhaps it is because the Belmont is a member of a small family owned and managed group of hotels, all situated in the West Country, that this hotel has the efficiency of a chain hotel, with the staff warmth of a private hotel.

This was a return after a couple of years to visit friends. It was a real treat. Very welcoming, yet professional, staff. Excellent food, always served with a smile. An elderly building and grounds in excellent condition, clearly with pride taking preference to saving money. Although the building is old, maintenance was effective with no problems affecting us during our stay. It is just the sole lift that could be modernised and speeded up, for being a hotel much used by the elderly, it is in great demand.

We have every intention of staying again when we wish to visit our friends, and look forward to again enjoying a relaxed, friendly time with outstanding service and food. Perhaps the atmosphere is best summarised by the fact that one of the staff has been working there for 27 years.

On this occassion we had a room overlooking the adjacent cricket field rather than the sea, and found this to be just as pleasant, and will probably ask for this on our next visit as it is a little less costly.

Room Tip: The hotel is well set back from the road, which anyway is not busy, so no rooms are a problem

Stayed at the Belmont to celebrate my mother’s 90th birthday and had an amazing time. All the staff are wonderful and I wouldn’t hesitate to go back. The whole experience was wonderful. Sidmouth is a lovely seaside town with some stunning scenery and great coastal walks. Special mention to Tim, Paula, Larry, Maxim and Abigail.

So clean, so comfortable - food is reliably excellent and most of the staff are the best. One or two in the lounge bar need a little more training. Not watchful enough of people arriving to sit down - have seen several get annoyed at being told 'I will be with you in a minute' . Bedrooms the best.

Room Tip: Rooms and bathrooms are spotless and comfortable. What we expect and hope from a 4* hotel and sometimes don't get.

Our three-night stay was most enjoyable. The room, service and the food were all of the very highest standard. We are determined to stay again; for a longer period next time. Sidmouth was also new to us, so that is another incentive.
