“Great B AND B”
Reviewed 13 December 2011

I was on business in Scarborough and after reading a few reviews opted to stay at the Esplanade Gardens hotel as i prefer the 'personal' touch rather than just be a 'name' at larger hotels and i wasn't disappointed.
Derek and Jenny were very friendly and welcoming. I arrived after 6pm and after getting showered and changed, i went into the bar and had a chat with Derek until my SUPERB evening meal arrived! The breakfast was excellent also and all cooked fresh - i had to order the night before which wasn't a problem.
The room was clean and spacious with plenty of hot water!
I would certainly recommend this hotel and i look forward to returning - Thanks

Myself and my boyfriend stayed here recently after deciding the night before to go to Scarborough. We set off having not booked in anywhere, I quickly looked on a couple of websites the morning we set off and the Esplanade Gardens was available. When we arrived in Scarborough we went straight to this B&B to check they still had available rooms, luckily they had. The owner was very pleasant and asked us to come back in an hour to book in as the rooms were still being cleaned. He very kindly gave us a parking permit so we could leave our car outside the B&B whilst we went into town. We were given the choice of the ground floor double room or an upper floor double room. We chose the ground floor room which was very nice, clean, comfortable and spacious. Toiletries were provided as were tea, coffee and biscuits. The bed was very comfortable and the TV had freeview. The bathroom was also very clean and had a shower and a bath. The breakfast was very nice and plentiful, this is ordered the day before and you choose your breakfast items, an excellent idea. The location of this B&B is excellent just off the main road and a short walk to the Esplanade, which is our favourite part of Scarborough. I would definitely recommend this B&B, we found the owners to be very pleasant and friendly but not overbearing we were left alone to come and go as we pleased. We have stayed in several B&B's in Scarborough, all excellent and this was no exception.

When I booked into this B&B, I was looking for a clean, comfortable accommodation near the Spa Complex in the South Bay. The price of the rooms were a good value, especially for the area. After reading some of the Trip Advisor reviews, however, I was nearly put off. The good reviews, however, outweighed the bad, so I booked in.

I am so glad I did! Derick and Jenny made us feel so welcome. Our room was lovely, and the hotel was very clean. The bar was comfortable and evening meals could be purchased at a very reasonable cost. While we didn't choose to eat in, another couple ordered meals, and the food looked delicious, with generous portions.

I've stayed in 5 star hotels, and this is not The Dorchester. However, if you are looking for an inexpensive, quiet and comfortable place to stay that offers easy access to the beach, then look no further than the Esplanade Gardens Hotel. You will feel at home here.

Very friendly family-run hotel with perfectionist tendencies! Very clean, breakfasts excellent. Obliging and helpful with our needs. Very good value and highly recommended. We will certainly return next time we are in Scarborough.

Esplanade Gardens Hotel....where do I start! Well we have just came back this afternoon (after telephoning the bus company to collect our party (14 adults and children) 3 hours earlier than planned, due to us wanting/needing to get out of B&B). We arrived on Friday lunch time, and did not get the "warm and friendly welcome" mentioned in their brochure/leaflet. Never mind ,this wasn't going to spoil our first day. We had to find our rooms ourselves, owner did not offer to help with any bags etc up several flights of stairs, despite single women with small children/babies etc, and barely spoke three sentences to us all. Our room was ok for the price but my auntys room was dirty looking and shabby looking. I didn't like the extractor fans coming out of cupboard type bathroom straight into bedroom - but guess that is only option if impossible to have bathroom window. We went into the bar and felt like Derek was the built in CCTV, he stood over us and made us feel soooo uncomfortable to the point we all sat in silence. He was following the kids (aged 3 and 1) like a hawk as if they were going to destory the place or something. Tea and coffee facilities in the room was a pure joke - only 4 sachets of milk, 3 tea bags (and sugar which we don't use) and when we asked for more milk we were handed 4 more sachets with a tutt!! If we asked for milk/tea etc we were greeted with tutts and eye rolling etc. Breakfast time was horrible - we had to wait over half an hour for our preordered breakfast with the kids getting impatient, Jenny never spoke as she served...oh sorry she did "tea or coffee?" and that was it!!! The breakfast service was slow and with an atmosphere or should I say lack of atmosphere but the food itself was nice. This B&B was meant to be family friendly yet those in our group with kids felt like we had to keep kids locked away in our room and silent - Derek and Jenny weren't friendly to the adult guests never mind the kids. My husband tried to make conversation with Derek (apart from breakfast we never saw Jenny) but we were either ignored or got very little response. Everything we asked for, from more milk or to use a toilet (after handing our keys in earlier today) we felt like we were just an nuisance to them. This is just a few of my negatives and could still go on but I won't. It cost us £650 for 2 nights and we feel like we were robbed. Had great time in Scarborough but the whole experience of B&B was appauling. It was £30 pppn in our eyes £29 pppn too much.
