“A good trip”
Reviewed 17 February 2014

A good winter break at affordable price. The food, entertainment , and trips ( this hotel belongs to Shearings) we're very good value and enjoyable. We liked it so much we have booked for Eastbourne next month.
. The menus gave a choice at each meal
. The hotel is a little dated but this did not detract from our enjoyment
. We made new friends in a very happy atmosphere
. The views from the hotel are spectacular as the hotel is above both bays.

We recently visited this hotel on a Shearings holiday. The hotel is in an excellent location, being high up it has good views from both sides. Not suitable for folks with mobility issues though, as the walks down to the town are down steep streets.

Our room on the top floor was very small, but nicely decorated and had a view over the North Shore.
The major let down was the food......We have visited lots of Bay Hotels, and usually enjoy the food on offer, but the Norbreck is not one we would recommend. The food was invariable tepid....Ours had to go back and be warmed up. Twice we were told what we wanted was not available - even though we entered the dining room in plenty of time.....The Gala dinner was very poor, apart from being tepid, what we wanted was all gone...again! One course was truly awful - lumps of melon roughly hacked into some semblance of chunks and wallowing in something red! We usually have a great time with Shearings and are very easy going, but meal times here really tested our patience. It wasn't as if the place was full!

The staff were excellent throughout....Our waiter was very polite and apologetic, but it wasn't his fault!
The entertainment was first class.

Scarborough is a mixed bag, depending on what you want....
The South shore has Amusements by the score, fish 'n chip shops, charity shops, tacky pound shops, cafes....and donkey rides. Then walk up the old town narrow streets and over the top to.....

The North shore is quiet and just one long, empty curving promenade, great for taking a walk along and a nice big beach when the tide is out! There are a couple of shops and a cafe half way along and nice garden walks at the far end.

To sum up, an all round great hotel, coupled with excellent staff. Slightly let down by the dining experience.

I won't mention our driver's name, but he really was the limit....Rude, abrupt, aggressive. His motorway driving was dreadful. We were really on edge, and we were not alone in our condemnation of his general attitude.

Room Tip: The position of the hotel is such that almost all rooms should have a good view, but the North Beach...

Food good, entertainment good. Single room cold and in need of refurbishing, no bathroom toiletries, just one tiny bar of hotel soap, lift out of order for 3 days. Having said that, the staff were excellent, friendly and helpful. Roger, our Shearings driver was also friendly and very knowledgeable and informative regarding the excursions to York and Whitby.

Hi Pentangeli and thanks for your review. Sorry that the lift repairs spoiled your enjoyment of your break and you found your room too cold however extra heaters are available on request. It’s great to read that you found the staff excellent, friendly and helpful and that you enjoyed the food & entertainment. I have a great team here who work their hardest to make our guests welcome. Our programme of refurbishment this year includes 3 single rooms being updated along with some more of our double and twin rooms. I look forward to welcoming you back soon.

As usual we had our new year break at the Norbreck. The entertainment was great and especially the compare who was kept all the entertainment going, as well as being an excellent singer.
The accommodation was a little dusted and needed some upgrading and the lift (which was immediately outside our room) was very noisy. However this did not detract from the holiday as a whole. The food was adequate and the service was great.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for a sea view room of either the north or South Bay as the views are spectacular.

Dear Joyce M, thank you for your review I am pleased that you enjoyed the food and also the entertainment our compare Daniel is a wonderful asset to the hotel, as are the staff which I also see that you mentioned. We are currently in the process of refurbishing our bedrooms, we have a certain number completed every year and this will be continuing for the foreseeable future. The lift is also being serviced next week so the breaks will be tightened and the squeak will be gone. Thank you for staying at the Norbreck Hotel and we hope to see you again soon.

We went on a little 2 day break to the Bay Norbreck Hotel with National Holidays on the 27/12/13
Wasnt very pleased about makeing us wait till 3pm for our room key when we arried at 11am.
The room 306 top floor but with a good lift when people remembered to shut the outer gates ? was warm clean and the bed was comfortable enough for me and i have a very bad back.TV was small but with 5 channels and sky news.Plenty of coffee, tea and milk but no biscuit which would have been a nice touch seeing as we had to wait so long for the key.We paid for a sea view which was £10 each for the 2 night's.Plenty of hot water and a nice big bath and shower.
Evening meal was nice and plenty to choice from coffee and tea was help yourself on the way to the lounge.Brakefast was very good with anything you asked for.The hotel do meal deals but you have to ask at the reception the day before and the night porter makes them up.
Night entertainment on Friday and Saturday was very good.We had 4 drinks vouchers each for both days so you could use them for a drink in the afternoon which i thought was a good idea. There was also bingo and a quiz. The bar come lounge was very nice.Looked very new.
The dineing room overlooked the sea and been high up near the castle the views were great.
We had a trip out to Whitby but didnt bother and shopped in Scarborough.Ok to walk down into town but got a taxi back for 4 of us was £4.50.
On our last day we had to be out of our rooms by 10am.Brakefast was 8-9.
Then we were told we would not be leaving till 2pm.Not happy about that. The driver let us on the bus at 2pm and went off for a brake till 2.30 pm.Both ways on the bus we didnt stop which i liked as we had a toilet on the bus and it was only about 2 hours from the last pick up.
All in all a nice brake away and a nice hotel.Talk about SHOP TILL YOU DROP.

Room Tip: .Room 306 very nice

Hi mmmmmmm99, it’s great to see you enjoyed you Twixmas break with us. Apologies for room not being available earlier, having had a full checkout from our Christmas break that morning the Housekeeping team worked as quick as they could to be able to get you settled in, the bar and lounge as you found were there for your use whilst you waited although lots of guests went out to visit the town centre. I will pass your comments onto chef with regards to his food, and the housekeeping team for keeping your room clean for you. It’s nice to hear you also enjoyed the entertainment and the surrounding area with the spectacular views we are so lucky to have. I will forward the remarks regarding your arrival and departure times to National Holidays who arrange that side of things. I look forward to seeing you again in the future.
