“Not our cup of tea”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2011

on arriving at The Captains after a long journey we were greeted with monies owing! and parking fees are £3 a day , how many do you want? This chap did not introduce himself and we still do not know his name!
Our room was very spacious and clean . This room was situated at the front of the Captains overlooking a one-way system which every bit of traffic passed the window night/day.There is a pub/winebar at the end of the crescent which revellers emerge from late at night/early morning and the noise is really bad! This is not the chaps fault but just letting other travellers know you wont get much sleep.
Breakfast is between 8.30 till 9, way too small a time slot when guest house is full unless you do not mind sitting anywhere or with anyone!

Room Tip: try to choose a room at the back

greeting poor never asked if we had a good journey. just told us how muh we owed and we had to pay £3 per day parking ticket last place we stayed at we got them for free.room was very clean apart from net curtains which were dirty. location was excellent.breakfast was very poor cheap tasteless cereals, cooked breakfast served on old fashioned pirex plates swimming in watery tomato juice after the second breakfast i was vomiting all day and had to spend it in bed, my husband couldnt watch tv as there was only a couple of channels that were snowy.we were told on our first day the tv wasnt working well and was told "well you havent come on holliday to watch tv" well we do like to watch it at night

This couple phoned to book a double ensuite room in the height of the season,we had one room left available for the 3 nights required but its our only room which isnt fully ensuite,we explained this on the telephone and they said they would get back to us.The lady called back as she was struggling to find a double room with the same competitive rates that we were offering and she wanted to go ahead and book it. Her telephone manner was extremely aloof, there was a sense of unhappiness at the time of booking,we hoped relations would improve on their arrival but unfortunately it didnt.
I would just like to comment on some important points,we provide parking permits at £3 per day,we purchase them from the council at £3 each, this is the price charged to Scarborough town centre bed and breakfasts,we dont make any profit from them whatsoever,we simply purchase them and pass them on to the customers should they require them,£3 for 24 hours parking with the convenience of having everything on your doorstep is reasonable,a lot cheaper than pay and display machines on the street,if this couple got them free somewhere else last time then it wouldnt have been a town centre accomodation.
Also if a guest doesnt like tomatoes they dont have to have them on their plate, plenty of people say no tomatoes please, why have them all three mornings and eat them all?
The vomiting in bed all day i absolutely disagree, this couple were out all day each day, there was never a day spent in bed, we top up in all the rooms daily, quite a malicious statement to be fair, but of no surprise.
Pyrex has always been well known for its good quality kitchenware which is why we purchased these particular plates a couple of months ago,not sure what is old fashioned about them as they are just plain,we find they are very hygienic as they dont mark or scratch with knife and fork marks which other plates do over time,im sorry they were not to your taste but im finding comments about the breakfast plate slightly petty.
The cereals we provide in our dining room are cornflakes, weetabix, fruit muesli, and organic porridge on request, the majority of people who stay here are happy with this choice.
The tvs in the rooms are all freeview, and so far we have had no problems with snowy pictures.

We are a very approachable couple and we encourage guests who have any problems at all to come and let us know and we will endevour to help.
We are a good value guesthouse in a great location in the heart of Scarborough town,we serve a good breakfast, have very clean bedding and rooms, and everything is on our doorstep for a great price!

Well I have been stopping here every saturday night since Xmas and I can't fault it whatsoever. The owner is a very kind and helpful guy and the rooms are superb. This is why I have become an ongoing customer for so long and will continue to be. A definate recommendation from myself.

I stayed here for 5 nights and was given a double ensuite at no extra cost with the b & b being quiet due to the season. This was a very nice touch.

The people running the b & b have just taken it over and they are extremely friendly and accommodating.

As with most b & b's furniture, carpets and some other fixtures and fittings were a bit old and out of date, but everywhere was very clean.

I didn't have breakfast as the dining room was being re-furbished so we agreed that they would knock an amount of money per night off the cost of the room and I could then use this saving to take breakfast at a lovely little cafe a few doors down at my leisure. This worked out very well as it gave me a lot of flexibility. (They were 100% willing to do breakfast in house if I preferred this though). Another nice little touch !

The rooms also have plentiful supply of tea and coffee !

What a wonderful surprise for us when we arrived at the Captains Hotel, we were given a warm friendly welcome. The owners new we had a little dog with us and they thoughtfully gave us a down stairs room, which I have to say was beautifully decorated and very clean. Breakfast was perfect and plentyful! The hotel is also in a fab location.
I fully appreciated why the hotel as repeat customers and we hope to become one of them. The downside - try and book as early as you can because the rooms get booked up quickly ! Full credit to the owners and thank you for a wonderful stay.

The Captain is a small out-of-the-way B&B (not really a hotel proper, despite it's name) located in Albermarle Square near the Scarborough railway station and the famous Stephen Joseph Theatre, homebase of playwright / director Sir Alan Ayckbourn. Albermarle is not quite as quaint as adjacent Alma Square but as most rooms look out on back alleys, it doesn't make much difference anyway. I booked a single at a very attractive rate of 25GBP but was warned upon arrival that the 'room was very small'. It wasn't as bad as some in London, but yes - it was small. I was shown a double that was slightly larger for 30GBP by the very helpful proprietor, and I booked that instead. I noticed that although clean and tidy, several lightbulbs were out and he quickly (within moments) replaced them all (nicking one odd bulb from another room)! Not completely ensuite, the show (although not shared) was down the hall. Both the ensuite toilet and the shower were barely big enough to enter AND close the door but I managed. TV reception in my back room was spotty but sufficient. Both the proprietor and his wife (who handled the more than adequate breakfast) were both very kind and hard-working - managing both the B&B and a family of 4 children (plus dog) they kept tucked away in the basement rooms! They looked as if they needed a holiday themselves but were always polite and promptly responded to doorbells and guest queries. No lift, but my room was only a half-flight up, so no complaints from me there. Heating was more than adequate and the windows opened with ease for some fresh air. They only sign of slight wear was a torn curtain at the window. WiFi is available in the breakfast room if you ask the owner for the password. All in all - lovely people running a very nice B&B with good value for money.
