My Hubbie and I just arrived back from spending a couple of nights at this lovely quirky quaint b & b.
It’s location is great as a base for travelling by car to Whitby , Scarborough, Helmsley and Pickering etc. but it is enough off the beaten track for those who prefer to go out for an amble (bring a torch for when it gets dark).
Booking the property was easy and the night before arrival we received a text from Lisa (one of the owners) with check in advice ( very nice touch) .We followed ‘maps’ and reached our destination easily although because the property is set back from the road up a fairly steep track it took a while before we actually realised we were there thanks to booking.com.
There was plenty of parking space at the property and through following Lisa’s helpful information text the night we climbed a few steps, opened the gate and found the entrance to the B and B part easily.
We had requested a slightly earlier arrival time and Lisa was very accommodating and provided us with the code to the key safe to let ourselves in. The entrance to the property was through a ‘split’ barnyard door into the dining room area. There was a proper farmhouse feel and we followed the request to remove our shoes before going up to our room since we had been advised it had a cream coloured carpet.
Access to our room was through what looked like a cupboard door and was up a steep flight of steps. At the top there was a very tight turn to the left on the last 3 steps and care had to be taken since there wasn’t much room for your feet. Although with care this wasn’t a problem for us this wouldnt be suitable for elderly or less mobile guests.
The room itself was lovely and quiet and had a Very comfortable bed, plenty of storage space, nice big tv,tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryer and a spacious immaculately clean bathroom with a nice big drench shower. Good quality toiletries were provided. The WiFi access code was on a dongle in the refreshment area.Because you are essentially in a dorma type space the window was on the floor level and overlooked the red rooftops of the neighbouring properties and the glorious picturesque surrounding countryside.
The room felt very cold and I have trouble with my joints when the temperature is low and although there was a large radiator we couldn’t find how to turn it on so telephoned Lisa for advice. She informed us that heating was controlled from the main house and immediately ensured it was turned on for us. The room soon warmed up after that and became nice and cosy. It would have been nice to have the heating left on since the radiator had a temperature control on it so could be turned on/ off from there as required. When the heating was turned off the room became very cold very quickly.Perhaps a portable radiator would be an option to consider.
The hosts Lisa and Martin were thoroughly charming and very keen to oblige. They provided helpful information about the area and they could not have been more accommodating . Baxter the dog came to say hello and we were made to feel like part of the family throughout our stay. We were asked what time we would like breakfast and it was cooked to order while we helped ourselves to cereal, hot drinks and juice. Breakfast was good quality and enjoyable. We requested a slightly later check out and like everything else this was no bother to the owners.
All in all an enjoyable stay- 5 star hosts but because of the tricky access up the stairs and being unable to control the heating I couldn’t give more than a 4 star rating .
