The overall rating reflects the fact that this is an exceptionally good 2* hotel. My few quibbles are insignificant.
My pleasant single bedroom had a magnificent 180º view overlooking the town, a comfortable bed, adequate wardrobe space and tea/coffee-making facilities. Bathroom was fine and the shower was great with abundant hot water. Downside: no Wi-Fi in rooms (but available in public areas) and no duvet, just tightly tucked-in sheets and blankets that had to be wrestled with every night.
The kitchen and dining room staff were exceptional, producing and providing some great dishes from a wide choice for each breakfast and dinner. The table service offered was marvellous with meals served on hot plates. If you want buffet food, don't come here - your loss!
Reception and bar staff were very accommodating. A bonus for an hotel to provide evening entertainment: if not to one's taste, there are nearby places to go.
The beautiful Stephen Joseph theatre is a must for Alan Ayckbourn fans - a wonderful experience!
The ageist references made by previous reviewers are disrespectful and irrelevant. OK, so in the main, it's an elderly clientele so what's the problem? There's no banging of doors in the middle of the night, no screaming children - marvellous!!More
