“Good Value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 July 2014

We had booked 2 nights at the Grand Hotel, we were shown rooms on levels -1, -2, and level 2, all 3 rooms were dire so we left. All unsuitable and we paid for an extra upgrade.
We walked over to the Travel Lodge and asked if they could accommodate us, the cockney on reception was pleased to help, even gave a us a phone to ring the booking in which saved us money.
The room was large enough, clean, decent furniture, good bed. The Hotel was at a good standard, friendly, a good bar, staff attentive and even seemed happy (probably worked at the Grand before)
Anyhow, thanks to the cockney reception guy, and thanks for the extra tea bags & milk
Well Done
Steve

Room Tip: We were on level 4 facing the Grand through a big picture window

Having read reviews before staying at this hotel I was a little worried. I rang the hotel reception and told them my concerns and asked if they could locate me a room on a high floor overlooking the sea, no problem she said. My husband and I arrived Friday 4th July for two nights, we were greeted by both reception staff in a very friendly manor who allocated us room 422.
The room was quite large with a fantastic view out to sea , what an exceptional room, all the staff in the travel lodge could not do enough for us.
I would say to anyone don't worry and give them a ring and don't be frightened to ask, they were very willing to please.
I do agree that it does need a little refurbishment but quite honestly it does deserve some of the reviews posted.

Room 143, decent size, no sea view, usual rubbish dirty courtyard view and a bed. Woke up in the morning to the smell of raw sewage, toilet would not flush and the ceiling was leaking all over me and my belongings. Use bottle water just incase that water is infested with Lymes or Legionaires. I will be taking this up further with Travelodge as it is a genuine issue of health and safety that could shut a hotel down.

We are sorry to learn of your poor experience srotideuk. We do expect all of our facilities to be fully functional and our housekeeping team will notice any unpleasant smells present in a room and will air the room out accordingly. We are concerned to learn you found water leaking from the ceiling and we would like to take the opportunity to investigate your concerns regarding the leaking ceiling in more detail so we would very much appreciate it if you would visit our website and use the Contact Us button to provide us with more details.

We parked in the South Bay underground carpark which was cheap and a short walk up the hill from the hotel (£6.50 for 24hrs).

We checked in fine and the guys working behind the desk were happy to help and told us to let them know if we needed anything! All checked in we went to the lift (even though we were on the first floor) and it smelt like a sewer in the lobby...

We got to our floor and followed our signs around to our room! It was a bit like a maze and pretty late on so we didn't pay much attention to the walls in the hallway. We got to our room and I was happy with how clean the room was! The bed looked comfy and had fresh bedding on.

There was a lack of plug sockets in the room, just two on the other side of the room which isn't very practical when you set your alarms on your phone! We didn't have a sea view, just a view of some old building next to it. There was a friendly seagull outside who came to see us who we called Bob!

We went out exploring until pretty late, had to ask for a fresh towel. But we had to go down to ask and they gave it to us right then.

When we came back we had to swipe our room card to get back in which meant we felt safe inside the hotel! We had a good night and were happy.

THEN! The next morning we got up with an hour to get ready for checking out, I went to complete my morning routine and the toilet wouldn't flush and then smelly water was leaking from the ceiling... Unfortunately it landed on my partners toothbrush so we thought it would be a bad idea for him to use that! We used bottled water to brush our teeth had a shower and left.

When we checked out we told them about the smelly water and Simon was really helpful and he seemed to actually care about me being traumatised by the smelly water landing on my arms and my partners toothbrush, he seemed genuine and I was happy with the way he sorted the situation! We were lucky and got a refund for our night.

It's a cheap hotel, and up until I was attacked by the sulphur smelling water I was perfectly happy! However, this is a serious health and safety matter so we'll be taking it further to make sure no one else ends up traumatised!

We have just stayed at here for 2 nights and was abso disgusting as soon as we entered the room the smell of foist hit us from the minging bathroom the shower was lifting the window was black rotten with mold and the radiator was so rusty i was literally crying having to go in the shower and felt no cleaner when i got out,the parking is a joke as you have to return to pay 4 pound for 3 hours so if you on the end of the pier or north side you are knackard people come for a break not to worry about when they have to return to get a ticket the grand hotel over the road swll all day tickets for the council for 3 pound so dont see why travelodge cant do this also i would not recomend any one with a buggy to stay here as there are no ramps and have to carry it uo flights of stairs to get to the bar, dining room and also bedrooms not good when loaded with bags!total rubbish minging dirty hotel 0/10 from me

Booked for 3 nights in June and was really impressed with it's location. Unfortunately this hasn't yet been updated like some of the Travelodges, which is a real shame. It's a very old Victorian building - much like most of Scarborough's buildings. Check in should be 3pm but we arrived a little early at 2.30 and had planned to ask if we could leave our bags for a short while - but were really pleased when the chap on reception allowed us to check straight in (doesn't normally happen with a Travelodge!). He joked that we'd been given the deluxe suite with sea view - but seriously, we did get a sea view and what a view it was. Unfortunately the deluxe bit was in jest as the room and the rest of the hotel is in need of the upgrade that so many Travelodges have recently enjoyed. I think most people know that this is a budget brand - you get a bed, desk and clean bathroom - but that's about it. The new branding, however, has made the hotels feel so much better. Alas, Scarborough is still waiting. That said, it was clean enough and everything worked, so no real complaints from us.
If you're looking for somewhere cheap and central then you can't go wrong here. Step out of the hotel and you are literally on the coast - it's really lovely. The shops are a minutes walk away, parking is about 2 or 3 minutes walk (in a secure NCP so don't worry) and it's pretty cheap. We paid about £18 for 3 nights - really good value for money.
The bar area was in better condition that the rest of the hotel, looked clean and inviting. We didn't eat in, just got a drink on returning to the hotel one evening, but that was no problem.
Overall, staff were great, location is great - just needs that all important upgrade now and it'll be hard to beat in Scarborough.

Room Tip: See if you can get on the 4th floor and ask for a sea view - you won't be disappointed with it.

I know this is an older travel lodge but did not sleep a wink as the room/stairs/ store cupboard with the squeekyist floor boards ever was above our FAMILY room! our 7 year old was awake most of the night! we ourselves did not sleep awink! if you do book and get room 226 be worried! worse nights sleep in any hotel I have ever stayed in! and not nit picking....it truly was horrible! and the breakfast was really over priced even with the kids eat free! beans practically stewed! plenty of cafes on sea frount with good frsh cooked breakfast at better prices! all in all , think this experience has put me off travellodges for good!
