On arrival we were told that, despite having originally been allocated a room, the hotel was overbooked. After waiting an hour we were moved to the wonderful Mount Hotel (see review). The receptionist, Adam, was very helpful in facilitating the transfer and in arranging the fringe benefits that came with the Travel Zoo deal.
All that remained at the Royal were dinners on two nights. Both of these were disappointing. Some of the food had clearly been cooked much earlier and left standing on a hot plate. One dish was swimming in cooking oil. When we mentioned this to the waiter he told us that this was the sauce.

My husband and I with two other friends visited this hotel from 29 to 31 May on a Travelzoo deal. Having read the recent reviews I was prepared for the worst! However we all had a food time.

The bad points:

Only one lift working - we wre OK as we were on the second floor but our friends were on the 5th floor and the working lift only went to the 4th floor - after that they had a route march to their room - however the porter took their bags to and from the room. I understand they are waiting for parts to repair the lift which is an old design.

Our shower was barely luke warm. One of the boilers had broken.

Parking at nearby NCP car park but you get a reduction on the cost from the hotel

Good points

Friendly helpful staff working under great difficulties

Good food and plenty of choice - waiter service dinners - although help yourself breakfasts with some queueing at peak times

Reasonable rooms with good decor (room 247 and 522 (this one had sea view to make up for long walk)

Pleasant pool - and we didn't have to pay any extra for this

Stunning stairs - the hotel must have originally been magnificent

Pleasant lounge area - also on first floor another lounge with a sun terrace leading from it overlooking the sea

Good position in Scarborough for shops and sea front (right opposite beach lift)

Entertainment one night at hotel and the other night free access to the Grand Hotel's entertainment - this is a sister hotel in the Britannia chain

So overall although the hotel has suffered from its financial problems - I believe it was in administration before Britannia bought it - we thought it was not too bad a place and hopefully it may rise from the ashes if Britannia can put some money into it - it could be a wonderful place.

Room Tip: Whilst second lift not working go for a low room - first or second floor

I wrote a very good review about the Royal about 3 years ago. Ive come here again for a couple of nights and can't believe how bad it is now. First, they refuse to give a second room key, even though there are two adults. The shower gave icy water and I was told a boiler had broken and it would be fixed soon> Naturally, it wasn't. I was told to take a shower in the pool vicinity in the basement (we were on the third floor) but the pool closed at 7pm although the room guide said 8.30pm. So - no shower and thus, no shampoo for me. A bedside lamp didn't work -but it wasn't the bulb. The TV didn't work but by the time the man came to fix it, we'd missed the film we wanted to watch. WIFI has been disconnected from all bedrooms even tho our room guide says all rooms have it. Staff are all sympathetic but blame the couldn't-care-less attitude of new owners Britannia Hotels. The man who came to fix the toilet (yes, that was on the blink at one stage) said everything is going wrong and he was due to attend a meeting soon to hear of his redundancy. He said he was an electrician but the plumber had already been got rid of. Britannia Hotels is obviously milking this place dry without putting any maintenance or effort in. One member of a coach party said they had been given three different rooms due to serious problems. The hotel has a beautiful Victorian foyer which suggests elegance and style. Unfortuneately, that is ALL it has now and I will not return. When I told the I couldn't wash my hair due to no shower AND the pool shower being closed, he said, "Well, you should have gone when it was open." Says it all. Try somewhere else.

Room Tip: Check whether everything works first, by having someone accompany you BEFORE accepting it.

My self and wife + friends booked a weekend on KGB at the Royal hotel scarborough, we had a great time the food was excellent and the hotel is very nice and in its day would have been a very fabulous place to stay. Location is perfect, will use this hotel again in future.

The Royal Hotel Scarborough, conjures up the image of elegance and opulence, where once only the privileged and wealthy guests would stay. Occupying a prime position in the town, yet with magnificent sea views over the harbour to Scarborough castle
Unfortunately this image has to be placed in history, as the first impression from the outside is a run down, semi derelict hotel, where paint is peeling from walls and windows are rusty and cracked. On view from outside are the remnants of previous guests dirty glasses, plates and tissues in the "dining room" and ballroom which look out across a busy rd to the harbour. We had the honour of occupying one of these window seats for breakfast, complete with window sill with mains socket, cables and 5 dirty glasses plus ddirty plate, cutlery and napkins still there.
This was our second visit to The Royal in 6 months, and although our first visit was not 100% satisfactory, we decided to give it a second chance - which was our biggest mistake, as the hotel has now chaged hands and is now owned by the Brittania group of hotels, and appears to be even further downgraded, which has little regard for staffing levels, quality of furnishing, and general cleanliness, in addition the group owners now decide to charge GUESTS -2.50pounds each to use the "pool" facilities.
With the change of owners, comes a change in breakfast, and this now eliminates any service, including coffee or tea served at your table, also several people we observed had to clear away their own used dishes to the next table as there were about 3 or 4 rather young and lethargic staff who didn't seem to see (or care) about used disheds piling up.
However there are some good points, - the entrance to the hotel has a grand staircase which reflects it's previous high standards. We also has a very comfortable family room (as the first time we went, we were allocated a 4th floor room which was cold depressing and dirty) so we were given room 201. We ensured we re booked this room again as rooms on upper floors and along the corridors toward the back of the hotel get progressively worse (in our opinion).
I have to say that the breakfast was well cooked, hot and plentiful, but there was no longer the choice of fruits etc if you dont want a cooked breakfast.
I have to give a special mention for Ed, the duty manager, as he was extremely pleasant, obliging, and patient, considering the obvious issues and customers he had to deal with, and if there is a redeeming factor of the Royal it is that Ed probably holds it together.
Unfortunately, the documentation in the rooms had not been updated, so times for the pool were not up to date causing dissapointment at not being open when expected, also menu's and other information was not current.
Regretably this hotel is now following the pattern of the other hotels in this group, converting what are elegant buildings and previous high class hotels in to mass market, low cost accomodation with poor staffing and too many corners cut.
We love Scarborough, and the location of the Royal, makes the balance of the good and bad, still a good option at the right price if you are prepared to forgive lack of quality.
We visited with our 8 year old son. He enjoyed the hotel, but there again he wasn't paying.

Room Tip: 201 is a family room.

The main reception is very pretty and retains plenty of character, the receptionist (female) was uniterested in our large family party that had booked to stay here, leaving our bags next to the reception desk as our rooms wouldn't be ready till 3pm.
The room we had was supposedly a double but you'd have to climb over your partner to get out of bed, it had no view whatsoever, although it had been modernised slightly with a plasma tv, which had no remote. We had 1 cup and saucer, and 1 pillow, and when asked at reception we were asked to take it up ourselves. The bed wasn't the comfiest and the room was too warm as it was the size of a box room, the bathroom however was of a decent standard. Thankfully we didn't spend too much time in there so if I were to go again? I would stay elsewhere.

Room Tip: I don't know what else you'd do other than pay a fortune for one of the suites.

Should imagine this Hotel was once beatiful in Victorian times but definetely not any more !
Very rundown, dismal and depressing even though we upgraded our room.
One of the elevators was non working and from the note pinned to it had been this way for several months.our room had a small balcony which we could not use as it was rotting and dangerous! Bathroom had some updating but "NO SHOWER :, JUST A BATH TUB ! The doors into the bathroom were sliding clear glass so no privacy at all..
Everything was musty smelling and paint peeling inside and out, horrible place to stay and expensive so don't waste your money on this place !

Room Tip: We would not recommend any of the rooms ...
