The first thing we noticed as we arrived is that the outside is run down, my parents visited 2 weeks, before and had a sea view room, which was of a good standard. However when we returned we were upgraded to a suite fantastic, eh. Well no the. The Ceiling was starting to peel and the TV was split and from about 2002, the decor is old and outdated. This hotel is rated as 3 stars but is currently running at around 2 stars. The hotel staff were openly discussing wages in front of guests, very unprofessional. I would advise people to look else where.

Was pleasantly surprised with the whole experience after reading the previous reviews
Booked 4 rooms for the family for dinner, bed and breakfast 2 rooms were good and 2 rooms were average, but all were clean. Food was excellent and very caring and helpful staff throughout the stay.

Room Tip: first floor rooms were better rooms to the front can be noisy with the seagulls

We stayed over the jubilee weekend as part of a large party and the problems started as soon as we entered the hotel. Nobody was at reception to book us in and the 1 member of staff in the office was more preoccupied answering the phone rather than serving us. The lift was broken and only went to the 3rd floor and can only hold 3 people at a time, less with your luggage. The room itself was awful, the double bed was 2 singles pushed together which weren't even at the same height, the ceiling had a large damp patch and the wall was falling apart by the window, probably due to the fact the window was rotten and looked like it was ready to fall off. The room was cleaned daily but only the towels and bins were changed, the bedding was untouched and the cleaning staff hadn't even attempted to make the bed. Whilst other rooms were cleaned the hallways were full of dirty towels and bin bags making it difficult to get past and the smell was awful. We had dinner in the restaurant each evening and again this was awful. We waited 30mins to be served and the food had obviously been pre-prepared in bulk, the stater was ok but the main was shocking, my partner had Salmon which had so many bones in it you could of rebuilt the skeleton. The cooked breakfast in the morning was surprisingly ok, the quality of the selection was good although the toaster didn't toast the bread and we had to ask for pastries each morning. The facilities including a pool, sauna and gym were pretty good although the spa pool was out of order and the chairs at the pool were rusted and badly needed changing. The 1 saving grace for this hotel is the staff, everybody in the bar and restaurant were polite, friendly and helpful. We were told the manager, assistant manager and head chef were all leaving and had only stayed on as our party was 150 strong, if they had left i think the place would have fallen apart completely, the staff deserve a very large pat on the back.
Overall i would not stay again until all the problems have been resolved, the room costs are ridiculous considering the problems. With a lot of tlc this hotel could be fantastic especially with the sea views and proximity to the beach and harbor.

Room Tip: 5th floor rooms have nicer views and are quiet. Be advised the lift does not go to the 5th floor so if you have problems with stairs i would avoid.

We stayed on the thurs/fri before the jubilee weekend under a supposed half board deal. I'd seen the reviews before we arrived and wasn't expecting great things, sadly most of them were right.

It looks like the hotel has just changed hands, but theres been several years of under investment, the staff were very polite and helpful in what must be difficult circumstances, but everything is looking VERY tired and worn. We were on the 5th floor and the lift had broken, meaning a lot of stairs, it looks like its been broken a while as well. The sash windows in the room were very old and tatty, there were patched over damp bits on the ceiling and a selection of paints as they tried to colour match the patch up job. The shower barely produced a trickle and the screen was hanging on by a screw!

It's not all bad - as I said, the staff were very polite and cheery. Having booked half board we were not expecting much from the food, but they've got themselves a good kitchen team. The hot breakfast was decent, and the 3 course meal in the evening was pretty good.

I feel sorry for the staff not being able to be more positive about this hotel - they're clearly trying to make the best of a once stunning hotel, but for the prices they want for the rooms the hotel needs some serious investment, and in the current climate its hard to see where that will come from. Until they've updated the Royal, I would have to say look elsewhere.
