Please don't rely on this hotel if you need assured accommodation! Although my family and I had a confirmed reservation (with confirmation number) made directly with the hotel, upon arrival we were told rather rudely that they were overbooked and we would have to go elsewhere. Even though we had called reception the week before to confirm our stay, the rude desk clerk told us that was irrelevant -- they were now overbooked and we would have to go elsewhere. He actually told me I should be grateful to the Royal since they had faxed a request for two rooms to another local hotel! He said they could have thrown us on the street but were nice to attempt to accommodate us elsewhere. At no time did we receive the slightest sincere apology from the Royal.

While we knew both from the online reviews and from the local reputation the hotel has that the standards of the hotel are now quite low, we decided to chance staying there since we have fond memories of the hotel. My family has stayed there for over forty years. I'm sorry to say that our family tradition is over -any other hotel in Scarborough would be preferable. I have been told by many people, including former employees, that the management isn't concerned with customer satisfaction, they realize they can just cut prices and there will always be someone naive enough to book with them. In my case, the obnoxious desk clerk told me no one would bother to talk to me to register my complaint.

If a hotel can not be relied upon to honor a confirmed reservation, you are taking a risk when you book there. While I'm happy a few people on this site were lucky enough to have a good experience at the Royal, I want everyone to know they are gambling with their holiday if they plan to stay at the Royal. Please DON'T RISK IT!

We stayed here as part of a party of choir members, the trip having been booked by a local coach company. We were therefore not able to influence choice of room etc.
First impressions were not good. Peeling and faded paint, and rotting window frames were apparent as we drove up to the entrance. Reception staff were not communicating well with each other, and did not immediately know whether our room was ready.( We later saw one member of staff there trying valiantly to deal with a newly arrived coach party all by herself). We were not shown where to locate our room, and only one lift out of two was working.
Our room was on the third floor, looking out on to a rear courtyard which closely resembled a prison. The room itself was well furnished with a bathroom which had clearly been recently updated, but the sash windows were original, and cracks acroos them had been (black) taped across! (see photo). The room was incredibly hot, and an open window and a fan which had been left on the dresser did nothing to cool it down. The room needed proper air-condioning.
At night we were kept awake by noise from the ventilation fans in the courtyard, and by seagulls creating their own special dawn chorus at quarter to five most mornings.
We had several main meals in the restaurant, and the staff coped quite well with our large party. Individual members of staff tried hard to please, though they did not always communicate well with each other. Breakfast was similarly quite well-organised, but there were some glaring omissions, such as fresh fruit, and a selection of breads and rolls (only rather dry sliced bread available) ----- and why no fish on the breakfast menu (kippers, haddock) in a seaside hotel? The starters and desserts for our main meals were on the whole good, and main courses served from a 'carvery'. Bar staff were friendly and helpful.
The 'rack' rate for our room was £155 per night which I would not have been happy to pay as an independent traveller. The present management has been in place for only a few months, but the infrastructure of the hotel needs urgent attention. 'Making do' is just not good enough if you are being asked to pay these prices.

GOOD POINTS--Food good and service quite good apart from the dirty plates! Beds quite comfortable BAD POINTS.The floors in bedrooms particularly the bathroom were not cleaned during stay. The bath ,sink did not drain. The toilet overflowed. There is no airconditioning in the hotel. The windows are rotting in many places. Wallpaper is falling off the ceiling. The paintwork throughout the hotel is jaded . There is only one lift working which often means climbing up to 4 flights of stairs. There are plugs falling off the walls in the main corridors. There was only one barman working trying to serve 60 people.Car parking is a big problem. Bring plenty of money! If you want a swim it will cost you £2.50 every time. Not mentioned in the prospectus online! The hotel has not adapted to the 21st century and it would seem that to bring it up to spec will cost an astronomical amount of money.

Just arrived home from a long weekend at this Hotel. Only several thousand ponds could possibly restore this building to an acceptable standard!
Food however was excellent but there is no excuse for plates that are not clean and insufficient staff numbers to cope with providing a decent service!
Equally the room we had was pleasant enough so long as you didn't look up to the ceiling and see the wallpaper trying to escape from the ceiling! Surely some temporary fix could be administered to make it less obvious! Bathroom floor was not cleaned during the 4 days and the plumbing was a nightmare. After using the taps a noise which could only be described as a French horn player trying to warm up for his first concert followed. The water did not go down the plug hole. And toilet had a problem flushing!
Not a suitable hotel for the less mobile either as not only is there one lift but no toilet facilities on the ground floor where bars and restaurant are.
Parking is a nightmare but that s not the hotels fault!
I was not aware that to use the indoor pool facilities was extra either.

Room Tip: Expect a tiny room if you have a single room. The back of the hotel is a dump so ask for sea view!

After reading reviews on here was a bit wary as had already booked. Stayed here on the 18th August for one night. On arrival we were pleasantly surprised. We were a party of two pensioners with 2 eleven year old grandchildren and on entering the lobby the girls went 'wow' at the grandeur of the staircase. We had a family room with a lovely sea view. The kids loved the pool and used it twice during our 1 night stay. Breakfast was buffet and was what you would expect
All members of staff that we encountered exceeded our expectations and were exceptionally helpful. Nice day on the Sunday so decided to stay for the day and the hotel had a porters area where we could leave our suitcases all day. We enjoyed it so much the girls wanted us to stay for longer but the hotel was fully booked. Would definately go back there again as thought it was value for money.
