An old, tired hotel, but we knew it wasnt going to be fantastic. It is full of nice, decorative, original features. We could live with all that! Our room had been rearranged to accommodate a camp bed (with timber slatted base falling apart). The rooms table & chairs had been relocated within the tight space right up to the side of the double bed, preventing access from one side. The TV had terrible reception. The bed linen was poor quality. The pool area is in a terrible state, cold, and unclean, smelly water in the pool & the jaccuzi was drained. Then there was a fairly bad leak in the bathroom, which left the floor quite deep with water (retained due to the very uneven floors of the old building). We complained, and lots of spare towels were brought for our use to mop it up during our stay! Nothing further could be done! When we returned to the room in the evening I had to complain again, as there was so much water for me to clean up. They now offered us another room, but the kids were now nearly asleep, and we had all our things unpacked! A megre offering far too late in the day! In the morning the Duty Manager was very rude, and didnt want to discuss the matter, stating that there was an alternative offered at 11pm so it was our own fault. He said that we had paid on arrival, and any refund would come from writing letters, but it wasnt likely to happen. I was determined and got a partial refund, after speaking with the Reception Manager (the Duty Manager walked off as he wouldnt discuss this). She was polite and helpful, and spoke to the General Manager straight away to resolve the matter. Such a shame, as I would so love the Hotel to be good. The Hotel needs some Managment, the attitude of the Staff was just wrong, and there was no Management or structure in place. There were so many incidents when such attitude was displayed with so many guests, from so many differant Staff, it is clearly a problem at the moment. Would we go again?......not sure.....we love the location and the views.....I just hope they can pull it back around, sort out the rooms, and sort out the attitude....it should be a nice Hotel. In the meantime perhaps there are lots of other Hotels waiting to be found.

My husband booked the Winston Churchill Suite as a birthday surprise - we have stayed there before. On arrival the reception team were rude and too busy talking to each other to bother welcoming us. Although a beautifully furnishes suite it was dirty. I found a mobile phone cover and rubbish under the curtains in the bedroom. An interview record and CV plus cleaning record of all rooms was left on the desk in the lounge of the suite. We hung the breakfast order on the door at 8.00 p.m. the evening before my birthday so I could have a birthday breakfast in the room and the order was still hanging on the door in the morning! My husband went to reception and the response was 'oh another one!' rather than 'oh we are very sorry for being so slack.' Totally rubbish. I recommend staying at one of the B&Bs in the North Bay. We paid £120 per night not worth it. Spa was poor. Pool was dirty.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else.

...before I stay here again. Have stayed on numerous occasions (before Britannia takeover) and have always loved it. However things have changed. Booked Superior Sea View Room and got a grubby, cramped, cubbyhole with a view of 3 dirty walls and broken windows. The window in my room (318) had to be propped open with the waste bin in an effort to let some air in. The upper window was shattered and someone had attempted a temporary repair with gaffa tape.

On the plus side, the breakfast was delicious and the dining room staff very friendly.

However, the negatives heavily outweigh the positives. Whilst it wasn't a problem for us as we are relatively fit, the elderly guests were having a horrendous time as the lift was out of action for the duration of our (and their) stay.

We had occasion to complain on 3 separate occasions (I have never ever complained before) and nothing was ever done. I felt very sorry for the Duty Manager who had to resolve our complaints as we checked out as he had no knowledge of our previous visits to Reception.

Sorry Royal, but there's no way I'll be back. I spent a good deal of time visiting your competitor hotels and I think I have found a replacement. As a special gift for our wedding anniversary we were terribly disappointed. Bad show Britannia, bad show.

Apparantly, the main lift is out of order, has been for ages, they cannot get a part for it, a member of staff told us this and also warned us about the 3 person lift having to "work so hard it broke down last week"... The lift for 3 is OK, it's the walk from one side of the hotel to the other when you get to your floor (we were on the 5th floor), it's like a maze, it goes on and on. To be honest, I chose this hotel as it reminded me of my parents, they stayed here lots of times when they were alive, it was one of (if not THE) best hotels in Scarborough, a far cry from the dreary, run down, tired place we stayed in. The room was quite nice, breakfast was like a bun-fight in a Pontins camp, the pool area was terrible and, surprise - surprise, the whirlpool was out of order (probably can't get a part for it?).

Very disappointing - not at all like the internet pictures. Bathroom modernised, but room very poor. Lots of complaints from visitors. Swimming pool was a disgrace. Would not stay again. Plus side - food excellent with varied menu, but dirty teapots, cutlery, plates at breakfast spoiled the experience. Good location for the beach.

Room Tip: Unless you are booking a suite of rooms, I do not recommend this hotel. It is expensive and not goo...

We arrived and reception staff were rude, un helpfull, we were not told where to go to eat/drink any facilities at all one lift broken and on 4th floor when asking staff how to get to room one employee had a argument with us about signage, only to be corrected by his own housekeeping lady. A couple had complained about something in front of us checking in and when they left the desk they were ridiculed by the staff(totally unacceptable). Room tired dirty toilets and peeling wallpaper only saving grace was the view and food. Serving staff were super and worked very hard to make the stay nice. Use of spa - again no staff on duty so kids were running riot, half spa broken down and only one shower working in ladies changing room and blocked toilet.

Room Tip: Ask for front rooms as the back just oveerlook backyards. Higher floors have better views but no lif...

This Hotel is a lovely old charming building and yes because of its age there are signs of wear and some signs of improvements being made but it's easy to look past that. The entire hotel was clean which is a very important factor! This hotel is huge and built in the 1800’s so it will costs hundreds of thousands each year in upkeep and maintenance so I really think its requirements for repairs can be forgiven (otherwise Britannia will need to plough millions into its upgrade which will then increase the cost of staying there considerably!)

On arrival, the reception is hidden around a corner which wasn't easy to spot as there are mirrors on columns which disorientates you a little. The receptionist was pleasant enough but gave us no information about anything other than the lift was broken (had a sign on it saying it would be repaired within 2 days but it still wasn't when we left) & she offered us help if we wanted it to our room (3rd floor), we didn't need help but directions would have been good as the hotel is like a maze it's so big. There are no signs around the hotel at all and we did bump into a few couples that were lost trying to get to their rooms.

Our room was at the back / side of the hotel and didn’t have the best of views however you have to take into consideration that you can’t get 360 sea views and it’s built on a corner plot so does have buildings around it. The windows in the hotel are old sash windows and are single glazed so you can hear more than you are perhaps used to at home (pesky seagulls mainly) but at the time we needed it (bedtime) there were no disturbances. The room was very clean (serviced by Stacey) and the bathroom was pretty new I think. There were a few minor issues that didn’t impact on our stay there though, the sink didn’t drain properly and reception didn’t attend to it even though we told them about it. The shower wasn’t as powerful as it could be. The bottom of the bath wasn’t cleaned thoroughly before we got the room but it only needed a rinse down. I am a clean freak and the overall charm of the place really outweighed any small niggles we may have had, the main thing was the bed was clean and comfortable and the room clean and warm.

Breakfast was great, good quality food and a good range of items both hot & cold. Service at breakfast wasn't fantastic and the second morning we had to ask for tea as we were seated & left to our own devises - we saw other guests have to do this. They perhaps were a little short of staff but everywhere is these days, it was minor and didn't spoil our trip.

We got free use of the hotels basement swimming pool and sauna as no one was manning the area to take payment and reception told us just to go in. The spa pool was out of order which was a bit of a shame. Some inconsiderate parents ignored the hotel rules and allowed their unsupervised children into the pool which caused a few of us in the pool issues & when a member of staff did go down to the pool they didn't intervene.

The hotels location is spot on, close to everything near the south beach and our room was at the back and although there was a little noise due to the single glazed windows we got no noise from traffic, shops, pubs etc which is just how I like it.

I would stay here again but I do think from seeing other reviews it may be pot luck over you getting a good room or not. For the price we paid we really did well.
