“A Fascinating Bygone Era”
Reviewed 30 September 2012

I have just returned from a two night Travelzoo deal at The Royal Hotel, Scarborough. The first thing you see as you enter is the wonderful 'Cinderella' like double staircase. Looking up, you find yourself in the atrium immediately. You can see how lavish it was. I absolutely loved the view of the different balconies and the giant chandellier hanging down in the centre. Every time we went up and down the stairs I had to stop and take it all in. The large lounge and dining rooms were also pleasant. The food was fantastic, so much choice and beautifully presented. The staff were very pleasant and most obliging. Our room was a little tired, but spotless, as was everywhere else that we saw. I was totally fascinated by the place and will definitely go back when we get some decent weather, as it was in an excellent position, with a lovely view over the sea and the town shops accessed round the corner of the hotel.

Room Tip: We did peep into a sea view room, when it was being cleaned. This was much more to my taste, attrac...

What a super hotel this is. Still has all the grandeur of days gone by. Our room was spacious and clean though. Comments on trip adviser suggest rotting paintwork etc. We did have a little neglect in the room but did not affect us enough to move rooms. We liked the hotel so much we decided to book another two nights. Our new room was fabulous. Large with leather chairs, plasma tv, fire place. We negotiated this with reception - who were very helpful.
There was a gem of a room upstairs called the Prince Regent Room which led to the outside terrace. It was like out of a stately home, lovely carpet and furniture. There was damp damage on the walls but this is an old building so you must expect these things.
The restaurant and food were fabulous. Great choice and cooked well.
We spoke to someone who was not happy with their room but would not complain till their departure and said they would never return. What a shame as their stay would have been much better if they had let the company know and could have had the problem rectified. We found members of staff were great too. We cant wait to rebook next year.
The swimming pool was nice and sauna although the hot tub and steam room were not working but believe it is all due a refirb soon

Room Tip: Book direct with hotel and ask for one.

My mother and I were looking forward to spending our final day in Scarborough relaxing in the health club of this hotel. I called to enquire about cost beforehand and was advised that it would cost £5 pp for a day pass until 8pm, that we’d need to bring £1 for the lockers and that towels were provided.

What a disappointment! On arrival we were directed down to the health club from reception, into what I can only describe as an artificial cave, fitted out and painted duck egg blue in the Seventies then left to rot. Nothing like the lovely photographs on the website-the pool is miniscule and no more than 4 feet deep, the spa pool had been drained what looked like an age ago and was therefore out of order. Okay we thought, and went to get changed. At least there’s a sauna…more on that later.

The changing rooms are utterly disgusting. My mother and I felt violated even walking in there. Narrow, damp corridors veer off to reveal a filthy toilet with a door that doesn’t lock or a broken shower dribbling tepid water over a rusting fixing or a tiny sink wedged into a nook with taps that don’t work. The changing area is equally as dilapidated but at least the lockers were less than 30 years old and worked! We changed and headed out to the pool area, looking forward to a sauna. Only to find that the sauna wasn’t working. We called reception and were told that the sauna was working! I assured the receptionist that the sauna may well be ‘working’ but it was not hot or even warm and that if that’s the case it may be a good idea to switch it on, to which the response was ‘Somebody will be down in half an hour’. Not acceptable. My mother and I swam a little in the pool but with another two ladies in there it was near impossible to get more than a few strokes around the perimeter before having to stop and change direction. Thank heavens nobody was on the health club reception at the time, meaning that we did not have to pay for the menial amount of time we spent in that dingy, dirty cave. We left after 15 minutes without even showering-simply because we’d have probably ended up feeling even more violated and dirty in doing so.

Do not go here to use the ‘relaxation’ area by any means. I can only imagine what the rest of the hotel is like judging by the terrible standard of the health club.

Room Tip: Don't even consider it.

probably the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. NOTHING good to write about it. The room was awful & small. Corridors were dirty. Windows were filthy & did not open. Only one lift was working & that was restricted to 2 people or it stopped!! The room signs were missing. I contacted the company Britania but no reply.

Room Tip: go elsewhere

I spent a week-end at the Royal, I was going to The Beetles Music Festival at The Spa.Ideal hotel for this, short walk.
The visit was like going back in the past, very elegant, crystal chandelliers, dark mahogany wood, comfortable lounge's to have a snack,a drink or read a newspaper or just enjoy the view.
The staff were very pleasant it was nice to see people who enjoyed their jobs. There are small lifts to the 4 floors. Only hold 3 people. The room had every thing you could want, very clean. But couldn't get the T.V to work.2 control pads.No car park have to use, have to use NCP with a 10% discount.for 2 days cost £14.00.Its a short walk at the back of the hotel through the town.

Room Tip: No comment.

Parking was a huge problem as there is none at this hotel and you have to park in local car parks, if you can find a space! We were greeted , eventually, by a male receptionist who really looked down his nose at us, he didn't tell us anything about the hotel just gave us our key to room 443. We got lost trying to find the room, it's like a rabbit's warren, carpets in the hallways and corridors are dated and ruffled, floors are uneven and a trip hazard. The room was a newly renovated one, yet the carpet was poorly laid, the net curtain was dirty, the bathroom was grubby, it really had been done on the cheap. The lights don't work unless you slip your key fob into a slot, but no one told us this. For a good breakfast you need to be down for no later than 8.30am, otherwise the bacon is like boot leather, the white sugar runs out, the butter runs out etc. The hotel is in a great location and in it's day would have been gorgeous. The newly renovated rooms are soon going to look ghastly, ours had wet walls when we left either rain or someone's shower.

Stayed at the Royal Hotel for a 2 night break last week. Quite apprehensive after reading reviews on Trip Advisor, got a really good deal so decided to take a chance.
Firstly the hotel is in need of decorating all faded, but every where is very clean. The staff are so professional, and friendly, nothing to much trouble, always smiling.
Our room on the second floor was large again clean with comfortable beds, nice white towels change daily, we were at the back of the building so no views to talk of this was not a problem for us, the views from the lounge and dinning room over the bay and harbour are excellent.
The menu was a pleasant suprise the choice was wonderful the presentation and quality of the food were excellent. YES I would recommend this hotel,YES I would stay there again Yes I would pay more tostay there again.
