“Very pleasant stay but could have been so much better”
Reviewed 6 July 2014

This is a beautiful, old hotel, which in it's heyday I'm sure was very grand, today whilst still beautiful is looking tired and dated and would benefit from some TLC. It is very clean and the beds are comfortable, but the carpets are very worn, particularly on the 4th floor. You also need to appreciate it's in a seaside location and the noise from the seagulls can be very disturbing especially during the night when trying to sleep, so be warned, other than that the location is great, the tram down to the beach is just a few yards from the hotel entrance, and this is needed unless you enjoy steep hills.
The bar staff are very friendly, despite being stretched and doing long hours, and the happy hour or should I say happy afternoon can be enjoyed every day.

Whilst the food is great, you may have to wait awhile to get it, especially if they have a function on in the hotel. We booked for 7.15 dinner and got told we would have to wait, which we did for 15 - 20 mins, upon being seated we then had to wait 10 mins for them to take our order. The food however was great, but they had a function for a school prom night and obviously hadn't organised things very well.
Also breakfast is great, but again be prepared to queue to be seated and wait for the hot buffet to be replenished, our advice is to get there early, late risers take note.

Despite this we were on a reasonably priced 2night break and it was enjoyable.

Room Tip: This could have been an above average review if only there were more organisational skills in place.

Stayed here for 1 night with my sister lovely hotel although the room was very clean looked all new it was a very very warm room. Had a great night close to shops and bars and restaurants would definitely go back x downside (but nothing the hotel could do about it the seagulls are very loud all night long ha ha)

This is probably one of hue worst hotels I have ever stayed in. I was in Scarborough for 2 days and had the misfortune of staying in this hotel - it is worse than faulty towers. I was bitten so badly by bed bugs that I ended up 3 days later in accident and Emergancy. No one at the hotel is even remotely interested and I have reported them now to the council's environmental health team. Breakfast was appalling. Staff at reception are incompetent - they over charged one of our group twice for the stay and couldn't rectify it. Utterly hopeless - places like this should be shut down.

Thank you for your feedback, I was very sorry to learn that not everything went according to plan and at this stage can only apologise for any frustrations or upset caused. I will certainly address the issues raised as you should expect a certain standard and this was not delivered. I would like to assure you that this is certainly by no means our usual standard of quality or service, and I would hope this one off experience has not tainted your view of our hotel.

Please contact me personally when next staying at The Royal and I will do what I can to further enhance your stay.

Kind regards,

Simon Powell

We have just retuned from a wonderful holiday at the Royal Hotel.
Our bedroom and en suite bathroom were spotlessly clean, with a large comfy bed, big TV and modern furniture. It was also nice and quiet so we slept well.
The breakfast was very good - fruit, yoghurt, cereals, hot buffet and toast. The staff were very friendly, only too pleased to help if you asked for any special requirements. Jackie, Craig and all the staff were excellent, giving efficient service with a smile. The evening meal was a real treat. We particularly enjoyed salmon fish cakes for starters; for mains, the steak pie was full of tasty meat and the most mouth-watering, light puff pastry - Mmmmmm.
The location of the hotel is perhaps the best in Scarborough: very close to the beach, town and buses.
The evening entertainment was the best we have experienced in a Scarborough hotel.
We booked our stay through a Groupon deal which was excellent value for money.
Yes, we accept that this hotel is not the grand palace that it was in its heyday and a few areas could do with a refurbishment but that did not detract from our enjoyment of a wonderful stay. Also, if the owners invested in totally refurbishing the hotel, the prices would have to increase way out of our budget! We highly recommend this hotel.

Although the main areas of the hotel are still in need of extensive renovations our room was very comfortable. We had an executive room & apart from a couple of small niggles it was very good! A tile was missing on side of bath leaving the pipework underneath showing & couple of large cobwebs in corner of room, & for some reason there was sand in the kettle!! Apart from that no complaints- beds were very comfortable & the soft furnishings were excellent. Breakfast was very good, might even be tempted to do a return visit!

Room Tip: The executive rooms are far better both for decor & comfort

Upon reading other reviews I thought that myself and my family would hate the place but how wrong I was! It is nothing like what people say, yes it is old and shows signs of ware and tear but overall I was very surprised.

The only niggles I had with the place was at our time of staying the pool/spa area had work being carried out on it and there was nothing telling you this and on our check out day we found 1 unhelpful member of staff in the resturant (we asked for a high chair for my son which she obliged in getting but she never appeared with one so I had to find one myself and my father in law asked the same lady for some cereal to be replenished again she obliged walked off not to be seen again and when he asked another member of staff he opened a cupboard directly next to them and got the cereal).

Other than these niggles the staff were wonderful, very polite and helpful the bar although a little pricey (you have to expect this) was clean and did a good pint.

So to conclude the hotel is a good hotel which is nowhere near as bad as most reviews if you get a cheap deal to stop it's defiantly worth it.

Stayed in Room 424 this week and had a good time. Bed and bathroom were more than ok. I liked the character of the hotel and would stay there again. Great location as right next to the tramway to the beach or just 5 minutes down through the lovely gardens. All the shops, pubs and restaurants are just 2 minutes round the corner. The hotel bar is well worth a visit for that last drink before "retiring".
