Well what can we say, avoid, avoid, avoid. We came here for 1 night as we were going to a function at the hotel. We had 3 course meal which was a total disaster. Food was cold, some guests were missing items of food, gravy came ages after food had been eaten etc. Then to top it all a waitress dropped food down my husbands suit! She said sorry then walked away. We presumed someone would come to us to apologise and to offer dry cleaning etc, no one came. My husband eventually went to Reception to politely complain. He was told to get a receipt and dry cleaning would be paid for. Unfortunately, the item was dry cleaned but did not come out so the item needs to be replaced. We phoned the Royal who said someone would get back to us. Despite several phone calls and letters of complaint we are yet to see a single penny even though we’ve been waiting 7 months. The staff do not care neither do Britannia head office. Avoid at all costs.

Room Tip: Avoid at all costs

Lovely building with imposing staircase.
Some signs of poor repair especially in the swimming pool changing rooms. Which were cold, wet and rusty in places. There is an additional fee to use the swimming facilities.
Polite staff. Dreadful food - cold evening meal. Breakfast - maggot found in mushrooms.
Car parking works out very expensive as no on site car park
Wouldn't go again

Start with the negatives and finish on positives.
Dont go expecting 5* when you've booked a groupon deal, get real people.
Some parts of the hotel are tired - hey its an old building.
Cleanliness of the room not 100% perhaps management/ housekeeping need to check the work.
Pool and the area left a lot to be desired!! So i would avoid.
Biggest annoyance was the inconsiderate staff members that start work at 5.30-6.00 am. Showing no regard for sleeping guests , they woke me both morning's and im not a light sleeper , one idiot exercising his vocal chords in the reception area.
How ever.
Staff that I spoke with were excellent and very helpful.
Bed was clean and comfortable (room212).
Food on the evening was good with fresh well cooked veg.
Breakfast ok with plenty of choice.
Half price parking in NCP £10 for 2 days, 5 minutes walk away.
For a cheap 2 days away we had a pleasant stay.

Shame a good three star hotel is spoilt for lots of guests by the breakfast food running out constantly and having long queues waiting, they either need an extra chef at the weekend or the one they have needs to be better organized as it must put lots of guests off from returning to the hotel, sad when the food is pretty good all round,me and my wife have stayed several times and there's been a lot of effort put into the decor inside and outside the hotel within the last few months, except the pool changing rooms which were cold and could do with an upgrade,, the staff deserve a big mention, are a big plus point, they're all so helpful, friendly and professional, making you feel welcome and nothing seems too much trouble for them, all restaurant staff work extra hard (except chef,it seems)non stop, the manageress deserves a medal the way she calms down irritated guests at breakfast time, decent entertainment at night, good atmosphere and overall really enjoyed our stay as usual,
