Fledglings is the restaurant attached to the catering department of Yorkshire Coast College and so it is very much NOT a commercial restaurant.
It has obviously been decorated and refurbished recently and is comfortable, air conditioned and has an extensive wine list. The whole place doesn't feel like a college catering department, it feels much more like a first class restaurant in a large provincial city.
The food is marvellous, as befits a training school with lots of students and those students being supervised by professional teachers.
What was a real revelation was the waiting staff. Because these kids are all doing two or three year courses in catering management they're articulate, enthusiastic, attentive and interested in what they're doing, rather than behaving like real waiters, who often seem to be just filling time between fags out back...
There is a slight lack of polish, no swirl of cream in the tomato soup, sauces not presented on the plate in quite the artistic manner they were obviously hoping for, but on the whole the food works.
We had tomato soup and meat balls as starters, both of which were excellent, and ham and a 'Haddock Kiev' for main course. The haddock Kiev was a very entertaining take on fish cakes, the ham, really gammon, less so as it was a bit too salty.
Vegetables were roast potatoes, carrot batons and courgette with leeks. All were first class.
Puddings were sticky toffee pudding with custard and cheese cake with chocolate sauce, both of which were delicious and obviously made on the premises.
I really can recommend Fledglings for a first class meal with excellent service and at the price, £10, unbeatable for that level of quality.
