“Palm Court- excellent!”
Reviewed 19 June 2009

We were booked into the PC hotel after reading the reviews on TA. I'm so glad we did. It was excellent! Some commented on the heat in the bedrooms, This was not obvious to us. The bedroom (room 20) was very good- clean and well provisioned. The floor boards creaked, but that's part of the character of the hotel. The en-suite was large and well maintained.
The rest of the hotel was equally clean and tidy, especially the dining-room/restaurant. It was a treat to attentive staff who couldn't do enough for us. It could be said, many of the guests were past their sell-by date( including us), the staff were mindful of this and were as helpful as could be expected and then some!
We didn't use the restaurant, as we prefer to eat out, so we can't really comment on the food other than the breakfast, which was really marvelous !
Smoked haddock with poached egg or kippers - superb!
One very big plus with the PC hotel is the free undercover parking. Very few if any town- centre hotels have their own parking away from the seagulls. Traffic wardens are a menace, they're everywhere. Street parking, even with a disability-badge is very limited and very expensive.
If you are looking for a snack, then try the Sea-View Cafe on route to the pleasure beach on the main drag. It's wonderful!
Please do yourself a favour and avoid the Grand Hotel. It's no longer grand, and hasn't been for many years, it's awful and the food is even worse!!!
If you feel the urge to travel to Filey (lovely place) do try the Downcliffe Hotel on the promenade. Only a small place, but the food Gordon Ramsey would be proud of!
Also, try the concerts on the beach!!!

breakfast at the hotel was o k ! but that cannot be said for the evening meal, since the hotel as gone a la carte (which means small portions ) you can come out of the dining room still hungary (even if you have most of the courses ) e,g, on one night as part of the main meal i had nine chips in a fancy pattern . the pool ,the manager told us when we complained was supposed to be between 70 and 80 degrees but it was so cold it felt more like 7 or 8 degrees ,it took us at least 10 mins to go all the way in.the highlight of the hotel used to be the dinner /dance on saturday night but because there are not enough guests wanting the evening meal they have had to cancel the dance .so there is no entertainment on in the hotel at all (even in the main season ) which makes it very expensive for what it is .but the hotel is lovely and clean ,very modern and well presented ,it,s just a shame about the rest

I needed to stay in Scarborough for a couple of days for a business meeting, and the Grand was full - what a piece of good fortune! Thanks to that, I discovered this wonderful hotel.

The rooms, and the general setting is satisfactory - clean and comfortable, but nothing outstanding. I understand that the hotel are planning a complete redesign of the colour scheme of the rooms shortly. It's all entirely satisfactory, but nothing outstanding - till you experience the restaurant!

The maitre d' has previously worked in a number of top hotels, we discovered, and absolutely everything about the service was impeccable. The real delight was the quality of the food - not so much a meal as a gastronomic experience verging on the ecstatic. I have paid many times as much in top French restaurants for food that has not been as excellent - the Chef is a genius! We had our evening meal there on the first evening - then knew we would be eating nowhere else during our stay! Every menu item we tried during our evening meals was remarkable, a creative and delicious balance of flavours and textures that elevated the preparation of food to an art form.

Out of curiosity, I tried, one evening, a chocolate desert from the menu which said, "Please allow 20 minutes preparation time" - it was nothing short of wonderful! If you think my appreciation of the food is a bit over the top - try it! Others in the restaurant were responding with similar enthusiasm and approval.

At the moment, there is a table d'hote menu only, and I understand from the maitre d' that they will shortly be adding an a la carte menu - I can hardly wait!

The other staff member who deserves special mention is the very friendly and highly professional hotel barman, who remembered the name of every guest after being told once, and also remembered their preferred drink. He had an apparently limitless ability to listen with real interest to the story that any guest chose to tell him, and then to demonstrate, in subsequent conversation, that he really had been listening.

When business next takes me to Scarborough, I will definitely be staying there again.

Staying at this hotel was like travelling back in time to the 1970's. Very old school. My room was very small and ridiculously hot with absolutely no control over the temperature. Even with the windows open it was stifling and I had to strip down to my underwear when in the room. And with the windows open I was woken at the crack of dawn by seagulls squawking... but I couldn't close the window because it was too hot. And the curtains didn't close properly so the sun came streaming into the room as well. Check out time is ludicrously early at 10.30 am too. Mind you, with housekeeping starting to hoover and clean from 8am it's so noisy that you'd want to leave early anyway. Thank goodness I wasn't picking up the bill.

Needed a hotel for a couple of days while on a recent trip to the East Coast. The Palm Court looked fantastic from the outside, and as there was free parking (impossible to find in the area) i decided to check in.

The hotel was extremely good, and great value. The best part of my stay was discovering the hotel restaurant. Food was fantastic, as good as i would expect from a top London restaurant.

Overall i had an extremely pleasant stay, and will definitely be going back - next time i will be taking my wife for a holiday instead of going alone for a business trip!

Stayed for a weekend. Impressive looking from outside and improving on the inside. Newly refurbished dining room. Bar and reception areas were in process of renovation, however apart from a bit of dust this did not affect the level of service being provided. Swimming pool area is also very well presented. Along with other reviewers we found the heating level a bit on the high side, but better too warm than too cold. Food quality and presentation were very good with very attentive waiting staff. In the bar the Bar Man was always ready to chat and pass the time of day. Location is handy for the town centre and a short walk down the steep hill to the prom and beach, or 100 yards from the funicular up and down the cliff. We will be visiting again.

We stayed in the hotel in August for a three night break. The hotel is in a great position in the town centre. It looked impressive from the outside. The bar and small lounge area's looked lovely. We stayed in the Glaisdale suite. The rooms were clean and the bed comfortable with crisp white linen and soft pillows. The bathroom was clean and bright and had a power shower over the bath which was great. It had a 42inch television in the lounge area and a flat screen television in the bedroom. The downside to the room was that the sofa and chairs were hard and uncomfortable. The view from the balcony was of scaffolding and a carpark . The room was hot but there was a fan in the room and you could open the window onto the balcony for cooling the room down. We had a meal in the restaurant one night . It was lovely. The breakfast was fantastic with lots of choices. The staff were friendly especially the tall young barman who served on a night. The carparking was a great bonus and was just round the corner. We would stay again if we were in Scarborough.

  • Liked — Big television and lovely soft bed
  • Disliked — Uncomfortable sofa and chairs and view from balcony
