The castle's heyday was in the 12th century when it was developed by Henry II and King John. This mighty castle has seen action in some of England's most defining battles. It was twice besieged by Parliamentarians in the Civil War, and has defended king and country from the Jacobites, Napoleon and the German Kaiser, when it came under bombardment during the First World War.

Though the price paid didn't give value but I guess it was contributing to its preservation for future generations

“Stunning views”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 July 2014

It's quite a climb up to the castle but worth it for the views over North and South Bays, the latter being particularly spectacular. There's not a lot to see but you can spend the day there if you take a picnic or are willing to pay rather dearly for the food on site. There are some wild flower areas which are delightful.

“well worth a visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 July 2014

been to Scarborough many times but never been to the castle, pity because it is well worth a couple of visits at the least, there is a cafe with seating outside and stunning views of the surrounding coastline, the views from the castle itself is fabulous, the staff were ever so friendly and very knowledgeable, so if you go on holiday or even a day trip make this one of your destinations, the prices are very reasonable as well, in fact one of the cheapest I have been to, value for money wise, nothing I have visited comes near it, disabled people can take their cars in, which is a big plus as you do not have to walk up a steep incline into the castle

“not to be missed”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2014

Visited with husband and granddaughter and greeted by very friendly staff. The audio equipment was very informative and interesting, the special ones for children fun, not boring. The castle grounds cover a very large area and the views are stunning, also the small cafe well worth a visit.
