Owner description: BLUE BADGE PARKING ONLY IS AVAILABLE. OTHER PARKING PLEASE USE LOCAL PAY & DISPLAY. Head through the imposing gatehouse and step into 3,000 years of history. Explore the castle headland with one of our experienced guides for FREE or embark on your own journey through history with one of our audio tours and gain a fascinating insight into its past, from Iron Age settlements, to the Roman signal station and medieval chapel. The castle's heyday was in the 12th century when it was developed by Henry II and King John. This mighty castle has seen action in some of England's most defining battles. It was twice besieged by Parliamentarians in the Civil War, and has defended king and country from the Jacobites, Napoleon and the German Kaiser, when it came under bombardment during the First World War.

Nice views and a nice area to walk round. Probably would have got more out of it if we could have spent time going over its history but with two young children that's not likely!
To park anywhere near the castle you need a parking disc. These are free from any local shop and allow you to park for free for up to 2 hours. We found this out from a very helpful local and picked the disc up from a nearby Nisa shop.

Steep climb to the castle and only accessible by car to the bottom of a big hill so the disabled may struggle Also try and get a local parking disc permit from one of the local shops as the area that you need to park in is parking permits only ,so the blue badge won't do .the castle itself is lovely when you eventually get to the top ,there's an entrance fee ,at the gift shop ..you can get some lovely photos of the sea from the castle itself ,also there is a cafe at the top of the hill and another shop where you can purchase a selection of homemade wines including mead ..all very nice ..well worth a visit especially if you like a long walk ..

This place is fantastic. The views over the north and south bays are stunnng and the ruins, and they are ruins as they are nearing a thousand years old, are fascinating. The free audio tour is very effective, but this is also where the attraction loses a star. There are signs dotted around that show you which piece of audio you need to listen to on your handset. The problem is that the sign doesn't show you where the next one is. Not a massive problem, but some of them taake a bit of finding. All in all, though, well worth a visit.

We recently had a family weekend in Scarborough. The castle is visible from everywhere but we got a pleasant surprise when we took the trouble to walk up the hill to it. The people working in the castle shop and cafe were very nice and welcoming. The castle was actually set in a large area and our boys had fun exploring all over the site. It was reasonably priced and had a nice cafe and clean toilets etc. Well worth a visit.
