Explore the castle headland with one of our experienced guides for FREE or embark on your own journey through history with one of our audio tours and gain a fascinating insight into its past, from Iron Age settlements, to the Roman signal station and medieval chapel. The castle's heyday was in the 12th century when it was developed by Henry II and King John. This mighty castle has seen action in some of England's most defining battles. It was twice besieged by Parliamentarians in the Civil War, and has defended king and country from the Jacobites, Napoleon and the German Kaiser, when it came under bombardment during the First World War.

We are members of English Heritage and the castle is certainly a site well worth a visit if you are in the area. Take advantage of the head sets as they explain an awful lot. Wrap up if its a cool day as the castle is on the headland and can be a bit chilly

This is a lovely castle with a very long history, having been inhabited as a lookout/castle since Roman times. Good audio tour which provides enough detail so you can really imagine the area in different time periods. The views are spectacular no matter which way you look.

Touring the UK, and after a full day of driving, we nearly couldn’t be bothered driving up to the castle ruins. But we were so glad we did. The views are fantastic and it was so relaxing sitting on the grass looking down on the water and surrounding area. And there is plenty of castle left for the kids to have a good play. A great place for a picnic or a simple rest stop. Well recommended.

We thought the best part was making an echo noise from the well /hole. Dude playing bag pipes which was nice. Not enough signs of information or things to do.
