We have just returned from a very pleasant stay at the Grand, and I felt that I had to defend it's honour.
I had booked several months ago, and at the time I probably wished that I hadn't, from what I read on here, but have noticed that in general reports recently are much better.
We have visited for Sunday lunch in past years, (which is terrific value by the way), so we knew that some of the public areas were a bit dated.
While sitting enjoying a pleasant meal last night, it struck me that the hotel was maybe like a favourite old Aunt at a wedding - well presented, but perhaps her best years were behind her, but a treasure to be loved and cherished just the same.
Our visit; we arrived about 5 o'clock having parked in an underground car park about a hundred yards away. Check in was easy, helpful, and cheerful (again much better than anticipated).
Our room, on the second floor, was VERY clean, bright, and warm with a pleasant view over the square to the front of the hotel.
Dinner was a serve yourself buffet, good choice and fare value.
Entertainment was available, but is a matter of choice, and frankly bingo leaves me uninspired - although there was a disco later.
We chose later to sit in one of the open areas on the first floor, and had a pleasant hour.
Drink was neither the cheapest or the dearest, with a good choice, and again no real queues at the bar.
Breakfast, was again pleasant, good but uninspiring choice, serve yourself, unhurried, and not too busy (we dined about 8.30).
My wifes enduring comment was that although the hotel is very old, it was spotless.
It is highly likely that we will return.
