“Happy Coachers”
Reviewed 9 February 2012

Have just come back from a coach trip although when you drive into the Grand hotel it does look "Grand" it is a large hotel with over 300 rooms and our experience was mixed depending where your room was. Some of the rooms were very nice Sea views etc. The room I shared was on -3 floor room 3006 it had no window was cold, the extractor and heating system made a noise all night so didn't have a good nights sleep when we spoke to the Duty Manager about these issues he said "Unfortunately there was nothing he could do as the Plumbing & heating were in the basement and that was why we could hear these noises." Had to queue for food and drinks. I also agree with the person who commented on the mould on the ceilings it was really off putting when eating. Food was basic and ran out of some dishes so limited.
On the positive if you got a good room parts of the Hotel did look very nice. The Carbaret that
was on for the last hour was good. I would visit Scarborough again but not stay at the Grand. Manager don't bother to respond as this was a shared review from 50 visitors..........

Thank you for your comments. At the Grand we welcome feedback, including constructive criticism.

In response to your review I would like to state the following for the benefit of other members of the Tripadvisor community;

In line with building regulations all internal rooms are equipped with mechanical ventilation. This is a quiet run system, but not silent.

At busy times, there can be a short delay for food and drink. This is inevitable in an hotel of our size, with over 700 guests every night. At dinner we have 4 main dishes to choose from in the Harbour Lights Reception, I am sorry that you were unhappy with this.

We are aware that damp patches appeared in the Restaurant, this matter was rectified at the earliest possible time.

Finally, Tripadvisor is a user-led community, when making contributions users are aware that their reviews are made public, and I believe it is only fair that management from hotels have the opportunity to respond. This website is a most democratic forum, and I have never written anything to suggest that reviews should not share their views. When reading your final remarks I cannot help but feel that you do not fully appreciate the nature of Tripadvisor.

we were a party of 12 who booked the "ROCK AND ROLL THEMED WEEKEND " the internet advertising was colourful and looked like it would and should be a great weekend, I say should because we paid £135 each for 3 nights bed breakfast evening meal and full entertainment. At the time we thought that was a really good price and as its only 2 star thought the entertainment would be brilliant. How wrong can you be. On arrival and asking for a guide as to whats on and where for the rock and roll weekend i was treated like somebody from another planet ! the staff didn't have a clue about the rock and roll and neither did the majority of the other guests who incidently had the entertainment included in their stay whatever it was, these other guests also had a free bar or a 99p bar, some had free wine in their rooms, all had a free drink with their evening meal and most had 4 free drinks from the teeny weeny bar that opened in the ballroom ( the ballroom was about as big as my living room ) after the bingo at 9pm !!! yes the bingo had to go ahead on the sunday night so the "rock and roll themed weekend had to wait" the people with the free allsorts had paid anything from £55 each to £89 each and most had booked with national hollidays. When I rang the grand to book I was told to ring Britannia reservations...we had nothing complimentary and felt that there was nothing free because WE had paid for the wine and bar that the others had been given and at a price of £1620 for the 12 of us we had also paid for everybody's entertainment !! At one point there was children on the dance floor and when I complained I was informed that it is a family hotel and that they are entitled, when health and safety was questioned as the guenuine rock n rollers have the large swing out dresses on that could knock a child over I was told the parents are responsible, they were not even prepared to ask that the children be off the floor after 9. I was told also by some guests who had come to rock and roll that the dj who they knew told them to not say the themed weekend when they book because they charge you more !! The staff I spoke to with various titles and absolutely no authority work for a 2 star hotel with a 1 star attitude and the general manager who said he would look in to it is ringing me.......still waiting........still waiting. If you want value for money, a good laugh and fantastic entertainment go to butlins themed weekends you cant beat it !!!

Room Tip: go to another hotel

I don't know what people expect for their money. The Grand is GRAND. However not all guests go just to drink and as we were on holiday expected PEACE but the first night we had 10 or more young chidren running, screaming and racing about on the upper balcony outside our bedroom door untill after 11pm We felt we were in the middle of a school playground. We reported this to Reception (3 times) and were told they had tried to find their parents !!!! Next day we were moved to a much smaller quieter room. The same children were in the Premier Dinning Room all weekend, and as this is buffet and the children were once again not been supervised but where running about and getting their own food you can guess the mess and noise. The Grand Staff kept a stiff upper lip about this and coped with it all. Parents should have been told to look after their own children. What a pity this spoilt the whole weekend. The Grand staff, food, and rooms were all great and we would have loved to return but not if they are going to allow this to go on.
A very big thank you to Stephen on reception who helped us so much whilst working against the odds. The Grand have to make their mind up and lay some rules down or lose happy guests.

Dear Riverrob,

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on your recent stay at The Grand Hotel Scarborough.

I am pleased to read that you were pleased with the standard of food and accommodation.

I am sorry that you were disturbed by some children staying at the Hotel. We are a family friendly hotel, but this does not mean that children should run amok. I am sorry that we did not effectively manage the families in house during your stay. You can appreciate that this is a difficult balancing act, between allowing families to have a fun time, while keeping all of our other guests happy. We will take a further look at this matter, and see how we can better deal with these situations in the future.

This is a beautiful old hotel that is very expensive to maintain and Brittania hotels have done a good job of this. The staff are very accomodating and helpful. Many people pay an affordable price to stay here and expect 5* luxury. Well dont. You will get a clean room with a very comfortable bed. Good food but not Michelin starred. Make the most of your company rather than running your fingers along dado rails and you will have an enjoyable stay.

I booked a twin online, check in was straight forward and I was quite please with the complimentary wine. The room was one without windows, which is ok because it clearly states about windowless rooms on the website. Even though it was dark, the room was lovley. Cosy and well kept with a good standard of cleanliness. It has all you need for a mini break. The jacuzzi bath is an added bonus too! Breakfast was straight foward and a yummy standard buffet style breakfast (other reviews have mentioned ques and nasty food, but in my experience it was very nice!) definatly come back! Also the house keeping seemed very sweet! :-) thanks!

We booked our first stay at the Grand after seeing it on one of Michael Portillo's railway journey programmes. Built in the shape of a 'V' to honour queen Victoria is a building like they just don't make any longer! Fantastic wide staircases, vaulted ceilings and the hotel even has its own Victorian theatre. Apparently when it was built it was the largest hotel in Europe! The rooms are pretty basic and the food isn't much better than OK, but that said it offers tremendous value for money. We've just booked our fourth 2 day week-end break here; a turret room with 2 bedrooms for 3 of us, with breakfast and dinner with a bottle included. The price for all 3 of us only £180!!! Must be the best bargain in Scarborough!

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms in the 'below' ground level area. We've never stayed in them but I have...

Arrived on the 3rd Feb and as soon as walked through the door was astounded at the main area. Was warm inviting friendly and clean .Was allocated room on the 6th floor and as soon as opened the bedroom door was impressed with the room the cleanliness and the location .The bathroom was great as was the sleeping facilities and yes it was vacumed under the bed before one asks. The evening meal was hot and delicious and plenty of choice,as was the breakfast and the staff were very polite and always on hand and that is ALL the staff. The dining area was going through a refurbishment and that was indicated on a notice and that makes a difference being informd so you can allow for minor things as they re decorate .I was at first before coming to the hotel a bit dubious due to the negative write up but for me it was a great experience as it was friendly and that makes a difference .I will be recomending to others this hotel. Its friendly warm and impressive .Remember this hotel is used 365 days of the year and the age of it so as like people it does have wear and tear but its a definate hit .
