This hotel is a tribute to Victorian architecture and is full of character and charm. If you want 4* luxury this is not for you.The location is ideal , the views are stunning , the breakfasts are traditional English at its best ( must say the lady who runs the breakfast room is a real gem ).Yes the floorboards creak , yes some of the rooms are a bit dated ,but for the price its good value. We keep going back for the nostalgia trip every year.Go with an open mind and you,ll enjoy it !.
Dont go to the Spa & pool at the sister hotel The Royal ! , its dirtly and delapidated.

My wife and i stayed for a bargain weekend on floor -1,we had a good check in considering it was busy. The room was clean and spacious with a queen size bed and we had a small window looking on to a brick wall,so no problems there for what we paid.when getting out of the lift the first thing that you see in the coridor are storage rooms for the rubish with the doors left open which i never saw closed during our stay. The lift doors being made of alluminium or stainless steel need a good polish as they are covered in hand marks and smeers etc. As for the food,it was varied and plentyful being buffet style as specially breakfast, however all of the crockery needs relpacing as it is very shabby and in some cases not clean.I'm sure that if you pay extra to be upstairs things might be a bit betterThe views from the restaurant and terrace are quite stunning. We had a good weekend and i suppose we got what we paid for

Room Tip: Pay extra to be upstairs

on arrival we struggled up the steps with our baggage and there was no help from anyone and we are able bodied, heaven help anyone who isnt. After checking in we went up to our room opened the door to be faced with a bed turned on its side and a gaping hole in the ceiling and a strong smell of damp. My partner went back to reception and they gave us another room but there was no word of apology. Surely if they have a room out of service it should not be showing on the computer as being available. The room we were allocated was an inside one which for the price we were expecting but it was so hot and the fan did not help much at all. Also the tea and coffee was awful. The staff were not at all friendly or accommadating. The view of the bay from the balcony was spectacular.
This is not a place I would recommend.

Stayed here 3 times in the last 6 weeks. First two times we got a room in the basement (no window). They were cheap rooms and so not a problem atall. Rooms were large, clean and really nice. Third time we stayed we got a window room with sea view. Room was a little smaller but still clean and great. The lobby area was very welcoming and nice to sit with a drink on the evening. My partner had breakfast and said that it was nice with plenty to chose from. All in all, really great old style hotel. Cant wait to go back again. xxx

My friend and I booked a 5 day break with National Holidays and both agree that the Grand Hotel offers great value for money. The hotel is a lovely old building, full of lovely attractive features, especially the grand staircase which is very spectacular. Our room, on the 4th floor, was very clean and had a T.V. which was easy to use, comfortable beds and the tea/coffee making facility was super, the coffee being particulary tasty!
All the staff, from the receptionist to the restaurant and housekeeping workers, were lovely, helpful and cheerful. Although the hotel is huge the friendly staff made it seem very homely indeed.
The Grand is situated in a very convenient location, near to the Spa and other facilities. The views from some of the rooms are truly spectacular, including the restaurant, How lovely to sit eating a delicious meal and enjoying views of the sea and the glorious east coast. What a treat.
Having read some of the negative comments about the Grand in the past, I must admit my friend and I were rather apprehensive before we arrived. However, we are an independant pair and decided to make our own minds up..... which is just as well, as we enjoyed our stay very much. It offers great value for money and is second to none for very its interesting architecture.
We have already decided that we will visit the hotel again and look forward to doing so.....

Room Tip: Some of the rooms have sea views, which is always preferable but even if you dont get one allocated...

i have just returned from a monday to friday holiday.the room at the grand hotel was very good but the jacuzzy bath was very hard to get into as it was very high.older people would have no chance.bar prices quite expensive.the hotel overall was average.the holiday was with national holidays who,s rep at the hotel was quite rude, the holiday was spoilt when we had to travel home on a shabby old minibus.i don,t think i will be using national again.also there were hand sanatizers everywhere but all empty.
