“Nothing Grand about this place!!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 August 2012

We've just returned home after a 5 night break with National.....thank God!! Our room was quite spacious but I dont think the carpet had seen a vac in the last month. The bathroom was very old-fashioned but adequate I suppose. The dining room, apart from the views, is a nightmare. The self-service buffet is all a bit chaotic and the plates, cups etc not very clean. We had one evening meal and one breakfast and that was enough for us......after that we ate out for the rest of the week. Our room overlooked the front of the hotel and the ruddy seagulls were a nightmare. Fair enough thats not the hotels fault but it would have been nice to have been able to sleep. The whole place needs a good clean and its a shame as I'm sure in its heyday it was a wonderful place that lived up to its name....but not anymore.
Tip-: There is a nice little place just round the corner called the Parlour Tea Rooms who do nice food in pleasant surroundings if like us you find you need somewhere else to eat.
Another Tip-: Avoid this hotel if at all possible!!

Room Tip: Room 239 has a window...... not all do!

Upon arrival at this hotel on a coach trip, we had to check in ON BOARD the coach! It was boiling hot with no air conditioning and took an extra 20 mins on top of a 10 hour journey! Inside the hotel there was a vast receiption area with empty tables and chairs, but when politely requested the check-in could have been done inside, we were confronted with the most rude and arrogant duty hotel manager we have ever come across. Dan was his name and he just snapped at us and near enough told us to shut up - adding that he was also hot as he had to wear a jacket all day at work!!

When we finally got inside this enormous hotel, there were only two tiny lifts to serve 365 rooms - some on the 6th floor so we then had to wait another 20 minutes or struggle up the stairs to our rooms. Then the fun really started as several people were issued rooms which were already occupied and one couple opened the door of their room only to find a man in the bed!

Our room was at the front (looking over the street) so was prone to late night roudiness outside and also we had a seagull nest about 2ft from our window so you can imagine the noise at 4am when the chicks were being fed! The rooms vary in size and have EITHER a bath or shower - not both. We had a bath so was awkward washing my hair over the wash-basin. The rooms were however clean but dated and ours was quite roomy.

Our poor coach driver was issued one of the rooms "below" which have no windows. He said it was about as big as a broom cupboard and questioned if it was legal with no window or ventilation. He requested to move and was refused although there were rooms available so paid to stay in the Travel Lodge over the road.

This is an old Butlins hotel and it shows in certain places. The restaurant is enormous but we found the food pretty good considering what we paid for our stay. No it isnt the Ritz but the food was buffet service with a nice selection and we didint go hungry.

The entertainment was not bad and there is an upper balcony on the first floor where you can always get a seat if it is full downstairs.

The best bit about this hotel is the location. It is right on the front and is handy for the shops and seafront.

We would not stay here by choice again - mainly due to the dispicable attitude of the duty manager - incidentally were are lodging a separate complaint with Britannia Hotels over his behaviour towards us.

Room Tip: Avoid those "below stairs" with no window. Sea-view rooms are quieter away from street no...

i took a coach party to this hotel last week. it was the worst hotel i have ever experienced in over 25 years of coach driving visiting hotels throughout britain. The standard of hygiene in their restaurant leaves a lot to be desired, dishes and cutlery filthy, tables disgusting, rooms very basic, some without windows which i thought would have been against the law. Lifts not working, one had obviously been removed altogether as it was boarded up.I would not advise a visit here under any circumstances

Room Tip: make sure you ask for a room with a window

What an awful place. Two of us stayed here for one night, midweek, August 2012.

Firstly theres no parking, you either have to buy a street parking permit from the hotel, or pay at one of the multistoreys in town.

We were given room 1012 in the basement, the corridors of which remind you more of a hospital. The room was spacious but the window looked straight onto a fire escape and tall brick wall. Decor is totally outdated and naff! The double bed was two single mattresses pushed together, which is usually fine except one was taller than the other, creating a dip in the middle.

Bathroom was ample size and clean, though the toilet seat should be replaced. plenty hand towels but only one bath towel?!

We were given a free bottle of rosé wine as part of the booking, but it was rather bitter to the taste. The evening meal is self service. The food was bland and nothing to shout about. Breakfast was a better meal, but the coffee must have been in jugs for hours as it was cold.

To top off my frustration, the maid decided to let herself in our room in the morning while were still in bed! After complaining to the receptionist and reminding her we had a 12 noon checkout, she radioed down to tell housekeeping, however the maid (foreign of course) still abruptly asked when we were leaving.

The best things you'll get from this hotel are the views from the restaurant over the bay, the view of the foyer which still retains its grand features and of course the exterior architecture. Everywhere else in the hotel, expect peeling paint and paper, dampness and a general outdatedness.

This grand old lady of a building is sadly dying. Expect the atmosphere of retirement home rather than a hotel.

Ran by Poles, if you've ever wanted to experience what a hotel is probably like behind the Iron Curtain, then the Grand is probably a cheaper option than trekking to Eastern Europe.

When we arrived they messed up all the rooms, some one was already in one of our rooms, and a key didnt work in another room, there was no air con in one room or no windows, one of the rooms was like a box you couldnt breathe in there it was that hot. We had to be at breakfast for 7 in the morning who in there right mind wants to eat at that time, the food wasnt great and the plates was dirty, it says it is a family orientated hotel, thats a lie theres no changing facilities you have to go to your room, theres nothing for kids to do and at night you cant get in to see the entertainment because the room isnt big enough, a hotel that size you would expect them to have a bigger cabaret room, all in all the hotel isnt great, the staff isnt friendly and they havent a clue how to run it, would not stay there again its shocking, its not for families, the best thing about the place is the view and thats all

Traveller. Don't be fooled by the location and the sheer size of the hotel. This is a grand lady who is suffering. The rooms are falling into pieces. The paint is peeling. The is water infiltration on the walls. I rented a room that should be closed due to safety and cleanliness requirements. In short, stay away and choose another hotel.
