“another enjoyable visit”
Reviewed 21 October 2012

Booked another spa room at the Grand at a reasonable price. Room was clean and comfortable but the furniture needs replacing. The hotel has undergone refurbishment but some more is required. The staff are welcoming and friendly and we enjoyed our stay. Couldnt see out of the dirty window in our room but the room was clean, warm and comfortable.

OMG just returned from a weekend in faulty towers, hotel needs up-dating paints flacking walls crumbling, carpets desperately need cleaning list goes on. Hotel staff need retraining tried to charge us twice then gave us family room in the basement -2 no windows no phone reception stunk of dampness and the bathroom drains well need i say smelt like .... asked to be moved and was told because we booked on line it was a saver room they where unable to move us The room was so stuffy we came away full off cold and chesty coughs.. Do not go if yr used to quality hotels this needs to be gutted and start again.

Room Tip: Do not accept any rooms at all unless 1,2,3 floors above reception.

I had booked this short stay on line, i had read reviews and was a bit nervous about what we would find, i requested a room that had a window as some of the reviews stated rooms in the basement did not have a window, on arrival we were told the room was in the basement, when i explained i had requested a room with a window i was told that the reason the rooms were at discount price was because they were basement rooms, the girl on reception said as a one off she would change our room and quickly gave us another room, on arrival at our room we were horrified to find that outside the window was a wall that was as high as the window so no light was coming in, but on closer inspection we noticed that there was what looked like a security light on the wall outside facing in !!!!, the wall paper was coming off the wall, bed was broken, bathroom door didn't shut and generally the room needed an overhaul, we went back to reception to inform the receptionist the room was not suitable, she then gave us another room key to go and see if it was suitable,( there was a Travelodge across the road but it looked as run down from the outside as the hotel and it would have cost us twice as much to stay there) we went to the third room and it was a better room from first impression. When we looked out of the window we discovered the view was onto the back of the hotel which wasn't a problem but they must realise people look out of the windows (thats if you can see out of the dirty windows) the guttering out the back had more greenery in them than the window boxes out the front, Breakfast was as we expected, buffet style, not everything was very hot and there is confusion with tea and coffee pots as we were unsure which were which and it wasn't very hot, food wasn't of the highest standard. Even when you book a short stay at a discount price there are still certain standards that should be maintained. I don't know if anyone from the company reads these reviews but i seriously think that they really need to start maintaining the rooms as they look tired and also the outside of the hotel looks like it could do with some TLC, there is paint coming off the front and there were wooden pallets left outside the front of the hotel for 2 days which just looked like no one cared

Room Tip: we stayed in room 619 and had what sounded like the boiler room next door on one side and the other...

We stayed at the Grand Hotel for a bargain price and, for what we paid, we certainly got good value for our money. They obviously cater for very large numbers of people at any one time so there is a bit of a conveyor-belt approach to breakfast and dinner. Having said that, their breakfasts were good and catered for a range of tastes - the choice is good and there's as much tea and coffee as you can drink too. The restaurant manager was helpful and polite and did his job very well. The food is basic and presented as a buffet so you can help yourself but, for the bargain prices we paid for our bed and breakfast, it was plentiful and a reasonable quality. If you want local hand-made sausages and organic poached eggs then you'd go elsewhere. One thing is for sure, you won't go hungry here. The restaurant was full at breakfast-time for each of the three days we were there and I did not hear anyone complain about the standard of the food or service. We also ate dinner there on two different nights - again, if you want gourmet cuisine you'd go elsewhere as their menu is not very adventurous but what they served up was tasty and cooked properly. I'm fussy about what i eat and where i eat it since I run a small catering business. I would not have eaten anything in the restaurant if i felt it wasn't up to a good standard - it was all fine. The room, like the food, was fairly basic but it was warm and clean and comfy. Overall, the hotel is a bit of a blast-from-the-past but walking down the grand staircase was fun. If i had any complaints it would be that there aren't enough staff on the desk so you sometimes have to wait a while to speak to a member of the staff and at times they are rushed. There was an information leaflet in our room telling us not to leave any valuables in there and to put them in the hotel safe - there was no charge for this service. The hotel is very well situated for both the town and the beach. If you want posh and sumptuous then you might not want to stay here but if you want a comfy, value-for-money stay with a good 'full english' for your breakfast then I'd say to give the Grand a try.

After reading several reviews,I was bricking it , my wife had made the booking for us, two couples.BB & evening meal, I had no need to worry, pleasant staff, good rooms and decent food set in a bygone era, large sweeping staircases and a grand lobby with ornate architecture, this was no travel lodge (and some of them are far worse than this). An enjoyable visit and one that we all agreed was good enough for us all too come back again.
