My wife booked us in here on 27th Dec taking advantage of the really cheap offer £14 each for Bed Breakfast and evening meal for the night.. We booked to stay in the Grand last year for over £240 for 3 nights but had to cancel for work reasons.. "Thankfully" as I think we both would have regretted paying so much out after sampling it for the first time. We had been wanting to stay here for the experience more than anything as my wife loves old buildings with grand staircases. The hotel you can tell from pictures was once really beautiful and its a shame that Brittania don't spend some money towards making her glorious once again as she is a shadow of her former self, The paintwork 80s at a guess white/pink/blue in the lobby and communial areas leaves a lot to be desired as was the breakfast-sausages were raw in the middle, Its a place for 65 + age groups to go and have a cheap break and waltz the night away and suspect that the better reviews are from this age group? Our room was pretty modern to the rest of the building having a new bathroom with Jet bath which was really nice. It was an internal room with no window which didn't phase us as all the windows in the Grand are single glazed anyway so could imagine it being quite cold but the only let down was it had the most uncomfortable mattress ever which gave us both a restless night. We enquired beforehand about staying another night before we sampled and are so glad now that we were told it was full as couldn't have managed another night on that bed. The staff were friendly "very busy" as the hotel was packed but they were professional and helpful. Would we stay here again - No.. needs a lot of money spending on her. We have stayed in Britannia hotels before and they are in a sad state of affairs too, It seems Britannia are just happy taking the minimum money through National holidays just to fill their rooms and letting their hotels jade which is fine for those wanting a bargain but money has to be put back in eventually.Would we recommend to a friend - Yes if I had a friend that was over 70 and liked ballroom....... As Victoria herself would say " We are not amused"

Room Tip: We were in room 2017 which was internal which if you dont mind not having a window was ideal as the...

Having stayed here almost a year ago at a discount price we did not expect on this visit to find a room that resembled a disgusting hostel! The room was rammy with a big dent in the door, the carpet was filthy along with the appearance of the decor! We immediately complained to be then sent to a room that did not even have a light on the ceiling! On complaining once again the third room was supposed to be a premier room. It was absolutely freezing cold. We turned the radiators on to full and waited a little while but it was obvious they were not even switched on.
We returned to reception to complain once again but this time we demanded a refund. The chap on the desk showed no symapthy to our situation whatsoever, it was easy to see he was not interested at all. We were disgusted and it is safe to say we will NEVER return to this dump again.

Room Tip: Don't book one in this hotel!!!

This is the first time we have ever complained about a hotel so we can honestly say it had to be pretty bad for us to do so. We made a late booking for the 21st December for a couple of nights to have a break before the Christmas onslaught. We booked a deluxe room with which a sea view and breakfast was included.
We noticed that the hotel wasn't very warm when we walked in but didn't expect to walk into a room that was like an ice box! The room was dull and dismal with cobwebs hanging from all corners, not inviting at all and certainly not what I would call deluxe! There were two sea view windows that were old sash style and the wind was howling through. There was no secondary glazing of any kind. There was one radiator which was cold and the bathroom had no heating at all although it did have a Jacuzzi bath!! There was only a small towel rail and nowhere to hang bath towels to dry. We could feel the cold coming up through the floor even through the carpet. The heating did come on not long after we arrived but didn't make much difference as the draughts were so bad. We eventually stuffed the ill fitting curtains onto the window ledge to try and stop the cold coming into the room.
We have to say the bed was quite comfortable but the quilt was very thin. The heating went off at 2200 so if you had your arms out side the covers during the night they got frozen.
The next morning we went to the premier breakfast buffet. The hot food was awful. The bacon had been cooked and then must have been put in an oven to keep warm because it was like shoe leather, just couldn't chew it and it was really poor quality. everything else was either over cooked, watery or had a weird taste so we actually left it and only had cereal. The tea and coffee were just cold and tasteless. The grill for toast burnt everything and it was difficult to get out of the tray underneath without the risk of burning oneself.
We went out for the day and returned cold and wet after a day walking and were in need of a warm room to dry off but on entering our room it was once again freezing. This was about 1600. At about 1615 we decided to go to reception and see why the heating wasn't on and were told the heating wouldn't be on for about twenty minutes. We asked if we could have a heater and were told one would be brought up. I explained about the draughts but the person at reception seemed completely disinterested. We waited for the heater but it didn't come. At 1700 I went back to reception again as the heating still wasn't on and we hadn't been given a heater. I was told the heating would be on soon and to just turn it full on and we were still 'down' for a heater. Again complete indifference and not even a sorry from the reception. Not interested at all about the terrible gale blowing into our room. The heater never turned up and we had to get into a hot bath to get warm. We were very glad to be leaving the next morning without breakfast too!! The whole hotel is very tired and needs so much work. The place is just too old and too big and is past it's time. It should be pulled down before it falls down!!

Really surprised to read negative reviews on here about stays at The Grand Hotel Scarborough.

The hotel itself was nicely done up for Christmas and the price was far cheaper than you would pay for a stay in a Travelodge or B&B.

We went for a budget room, and it was nicely decorated, furnished, warm (including during the night when it used to get quite cold in the past) and clean.

The breakfast was fine and the staff were far friendlier than they have been in the past. Looking at the menu, it looked as if it was probably worth paying a bit extra to stay in the premier dining room, if you were also having evening meals.

The entertainment was okay - your typical cabaret, with plenty of seating and a good view. Unlike what you come to expect when you see shows at Butlins! Also great free wireless internet in the lobby.

The only negatives were that there is no guaranteed parking, and the windows on this huge old building could do with a clean – but it would be quite a job to do this on a regular basis. I’m not keen on dogs being allowed in rooms. They weren’t a problem, but there were so few, why bother?

I don’t know what all the people on here complaining must be used to normally, but I will certainly be booking again in 2013.

We visited The Grand on the 19th December, just overnight after reading that they allowed dogs to stay in the hotel, the price we payed was £37 50 for dinner bed and breakfast and that included the dog. Our room was 608 very small but nice and warm, really clean, that's the good points the bad points are the bed was rather uncomfortable, could feel every lump in the mattress, and the window rattled all night,it was a very windy night so that wouldn't normally be a problem. The food was nice and hot, tasty and a good selection, the restaurant itself was cold as was most of the communal areas but i can imagine it would cost a fortune to heat a hotel the size of The Grand. The staff on reception were helpful and friendly and we didn't have to queue long to check-in or to speak to the receptionist. Will stay at The Grand again, like people keep saying in reviews you do get what you pay for and i thought we got a bargain. It must have been a magnificent hotel in it's heyday.

We went to the Grand beginning of December, it has been upgraded, and is brilliant. The Christmas fayre was very good, with a good choice for all tastes. The room was kept immaculately clean, and the staff were so friendly, at all levels. Will certainly be returning.
