“NEVER AGAIN”
Reviewed 14 January 2014

We booked a 3 night stay to have something to look forward to in January...NEVER again will I book a hotel without reading reviews first! We had booked an internal room but decided upon arrival to "push the boat out" and upgrade to a Premier Room...I'm still trying to figure out what was "Premier" about it...there were punch holes in the wall, enough beds to sleep 6 people, the decor hadn't been updated for what looked like 30 years and the beds were solid with pillows only a little softer than concrete. Shabby, worn and old sums up the whole hotel. It was also freezing cold and when I told reception staff I couldn't get the heater to come on, they advised it wasn't controlled by guests but was on a central timer. To be fair they did offer to send a heater to the room which helped a little. The highlight of our stay had to be seeing an unconscious male laid out on a communal settee, surrounded by empty White Lightning bottles & cans of strong lager being roused by 2 members of staff telling him he couldn't sleep there...it was lunchtime! On a more positive note, it was acceptably clean (or I would have left immediately) and the shower was powerful....I really can't think of anything else positive to say. The building was clearly very grand and opulent in it's prime, unfortunately that was probably at the beginning of the last century (which may well have been when it was last updated) !

We spent a very enjoyable 3 nights at the Britannia grand Hotel Scarborough. When you book be sure to ask for a room with a window as they do have internal rooms and some below ground level. This hotel is a beautiful listed building. Victorian ellegance and charm in all the public rooms. The Harbour Lights restaurant has a full bay view which is a delight. The staff are wonderful and they do their absolute best to be of service. The beds and pillows were very comfortable and the room was warm. The food was good and the buffet self service was well organised. We really enjoyed the Elvis Tribute show with Adam Carter as "Elvis". Brilliant entertainer, very talented. The Buddy Holly tribute had some very nostalgic rock and roll numbers and some of the guests had dressed in fifties style clothes.
There are a few little complaints, Our dinner was stated as 5.30pm so the first night we went down on the dot. The queue was enormous, we queued for 15 mins or so but my husband has back trouble and couldnt stand any longer so we went to the bar and sat and had a drink until 6.15pm then went straight in, so the following evenings we didnt go in till after 6.00 and no queing. Second sitting was at 6.30pm so we managed to get served before the next lot came in.
The other little niggle was that there isnt enough seating in the cabaret room. There is a balcony which has seating like a theatre but if you have drinks there are no tables and there are steps and getting passed people on narrow rows proves difficult. But I suppose there isnt much they can do about that. All in all it was a lovely holiday, excellent value. Thank you Britannia and National holidays. Thank you Lucy for returning some jewellery I left in a drawer.

Room Tip: be sure to book a room with a window, there are some internal rooms and some below ground level.

We have stayed at a couple of Britannia hotels and have always been more than happy. The hotels aren't 5 star luxury but we love the history and once grandness of these amazing buildings. We booked the Grand last minute and after reading some reviews felt a little apprehensive, but for the price was very pleased.
The lobby and stairway are magnificent and with the huge Christmas trees felt atmospheric. The room was basic but clean and very warm. Breakfast is served in a huge Room with an amazing view of the sea. The food was adequate and all the staff very friendly.
Will definitely be back.

Having returned today from a night in the Britania Grand Hotel Scarborough i can only stress my words of warning as above. We booked a budget room but nothing could have prepared us for just how budget it was, It was in the bowels of the hotel, an internal room, no light no ventilation no phone.... we felt cut off from the world, entombed. The room consisted of a small double bed which was pushed against the wall against a single bed headboard, there was one bedside table with a lamp a dressing table with no chair and a small single wardrobe. This was clearly a single room with an undersized double bed in it and as a consequence of this there was not enough room to swing a cat. It felt like a cross between a prison cell and a broom cupboard with an en-suite. So if you are in the slightest claustraphobic don't book a budget room at the Grand.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else.

We went as a surprise birthday treat for my hubby and this is a lesson for me to read the reviews and do my research! I assumed that as it's the Grand it would be grand - I was wrong.

The common areas have the Victorian opulent feel but our room on 5th floor looked as though it hadn't been updated for at least 25 years - no shower, broken toilet roll holder, ill-fitting net curtains, indeed no other curtain in bathroom, very old-fashioned furniture and TV (small fat portable, not flat screen. I was told they'd all been stolen!). Lots of hot water and heating was great though and the linen was fresh and clean. The bed was solid but we slept quite well.

Breakfast felt like Butlins in the 70s! Queuing for rubbery scrambled egg, soggy toast, huge piles of marmalade in what looked like a school dinner pie dish, appalling stale coffee in a Thermos flask, watered down apple juice.

Most staff were nice, friendly and helpful but when I rang Reception bell once (as requested on the desk sign), no reply. Ended up ringing it 5 times and was faced with an angry duty manager who said they were short-staffed. Not my problem, sorry. Customer service is key to a great business. Receptionist at check-in was lovely and told us we'd been upgraded to a nice big family room and sorry, we couldn't have a sea view as requested as they were full. The room wasn't that big and we felt a double would have been cramped.

Yes we paid a budget price but expected acceptable, not poor. We wouldn't stay there again unless we did our research and paid a lot more to get a much better room. We couldn't help feeling whatever we'd paid we would have had the same poor breakfast though.

Room Tip: Ask what you get for your money, and expect to pay more for a sea view.
