“Had a great stay, shame about the parking.”
Reviewed 11 February 2014

We have just returned after a 3 night stay, overall it was really good. We booked 4 rooms. 2 were fine, 1 was small and the other was a matchbox. ( 0506) it was nearly impossible to open the bathroom door as there was a chest of drawers opposite and it opened outwards. The beds had duvets which just cover the top of the bed, little or no overhang so when you get in and try to cover up you get a cold draft on each side which I found quite annoying. After the first cold night I slept on top and used a blanket to cover me. Parking was a real problem as there was no empty bays for the duration of our stay. We bought a daily £3 parking permit which was non refundable if you can't find anywhere to park. Now the good bit, the food was excellent, self service so you could pick what you wanted as long as you like chicken and pork. Sunday evening meal was the highlight of our stay, fantastic. Roast beef, yorkshire puddings with the works, Pure Heaven!! The building is old so don't expect modern decor, we found it very grand and quite elegant, public areas had nice seating and there was live entertainment every night. Creaky floors but what can you expect with the age of the building. Give it a go, it's worth it for that Sunday dinner.

Room Tip: Take your own pillows and duvets

Just read the review by JohnWHull,i agree completely we were there this weekend for the Micheal Buble tribute. We got a discounted offer with National Holidays £39 each for coach travel, bed breakfast and evening meal, bargain. We arrived at the Grand to be greeted by a rep from National she explained about check-in and where to store our luggage untill 2pm when our room would be ready, check-in was very good we did'nt queue for long and were given a seaview room(412) as we requested, the room was a twin which had plenty of room for two people, the beds were extremely comfortable, the heater worked well so the room was warm, the bathroom had a jacuzzi bath, plenry of hot water at 4pm but it did run cold later in the evening probably when lots of other people were using their bathrooms at the same time, also the room was clean and the carpet looked new.

Evening meal: we were given a 6 30pm meal time we arrived slightly late and joined the quite long queue, we didnt realise that this was the 7pm queue and we should have gone down to the front. The meal and service was also good, same applied for the breakfast.

The cabaret was excellent, shame I had to watch it by myself, husband spent most of the time queueing at the bar, at one point he was there for over an hour,so definately no binge drinking going on.( He should have taken a four pack to queue with.)

We will be returning to the Grand again I think it is a beautiful hotel with lots of history.

Room Tip: I think its just the luck of the draw

This was our 3rd stay in The Grand Hotel and I have got to say it was the most disappointing. We had a one night bed, breakfast and evening meal special deal, but to be honest the room we were allocated was not good, it was on the lower ground and was accessed by a set of stairs that simply did not look like part of the hotel (grotty, cold, stone stairs). The room had no window (false one was stuck on wall for some strange reason), and we found the room to be freezing, bearing in mind it is the middle of winter, the heating did not kick in until 8.00 pm. The shower did not work, so had to have a luke warm bath instead. We did complain about this and were promised a heater which arrived 2 hours later than they said it would. The evening meal was very bland. the only thing good was the breakfast. I am just pleased we had not paid full price because I would want some sort of refund. I think because it was a deal they allocated a room that they would not normally be able to use for full paying customers.

Room Tip: I would advise not to accept rooms on lower ground floor.

We took a 2 day break, to see a BubleTribute show at the Grand Hotel, with National Holidays. No complaints at all about the coach trip there and back!
However, though we have stayed in several Britannia Hotels over the years, this is the first time they have not delivered a satisfactory service. The room was an executive spa and was a delight to stay in. Very spacious, clean, well decorated, comfortable bed. All that was required for a comfortable over night stay. The food could not be faulted! We enjoyed all that we selected and were immensely satisfied. The cabaret was excellent; having a warm-up comedian/musician first followed by a tribute to Michael Buble. Both acts were very well worth seeing.
Now we come to the problem. The bar service was appalling, having unacceptably long queues at the lounge and cabaret bars. 40 minutes was our longest time to get served with both bars having only 1 barman serving at each during this period. Part of the "deal" was a 2 for 1 on all alcoholic drinks. Therefore, common sense should have dictated to the management that the bars would be immensely busy. No criticism is levelled at the bar staff. They were their usual, friendly, efficient and capable selves. There were just not enough staff on duty!! Those that were on duty coped as best they could. The staff were "covering" for a poorly managed situation. There was no "flow" at the bars as staff had to cope with opening corked wine bottles and all other bar duties as best as they could. There was no visibility of any management trying to sort things out.
The complaints were coming thick and fast but absolutely nothing changed and the staff were bearing the understandable brunt of the guests feelings.
Was this a covert attempt to trial a system to reduce the consumption of alcohol?
Grand Hotel you call yourselves but your customers did not think you were very "grand" at all.

Room Tip: Our room was an executive room with a jaccuzi and sea view. Excellent views of Scarborough and the j...

We stayed through national holidays, after reading reviews we where a bit worried about the hotel however still went, we couldn't check in till two as the rooms where getting cleaned which we understood, when we got to our room the room was really small, the tv was small and didn't really work, the window sash was broken and you couldn't open the window the room was way too warm even with the heating off so we went downstairs to see if we could upgrade the receptionist was so rude her attitude towards people was disgusting, we where told the full hotel was booked and couldn't upgrade I decided to look on the website to see if I could book a room which I could so went back down a while later and there was a different guy on reception I explained the situation and he was so understanding we got to change rooms in the end, the room we got was so much better it was bigger, cleaner and had a nice spa bath in it. When we went down for tea it was self service they ran out of almost everything and didn't keep on top of things and what we did eat wasn't very nice, the waitress in there was rude to many people and her attitude was appalling, the bar shut at 11oclock but the disco was on till half twelve which didn't make sense. We went too see if we could get food from anywhere and where told we couldn't get none we asked if we could order something in and the man had told us no we had to eat the hotel food, but there's wasn't any his attitude was disgraceful. The queues for the bar where horrendous, the act that was on was not what we expected he was terrible, and as for breakfast the same waitress was on and again she was rude. The only helpful person in the hotel was the receptionist that helped us change rooms. Overall the staff are rude the foods disgusting, would we stay again NO not even for the price we paid it wasn't worth it, would I recommend it NO.

We've just got back from a 4 day break with National. Must admit I was dreading it after reading the reviews on here first but it really wasn't as bad as I feared. We had a large room in the circle, radiator worked at full belt, plus a fan heater just in case. The hotel is a grand old lady in need of some TLC but fits the bill for a budget break. Food was plentiful and of a decent standard, but woe betide if you miss your allocated time slot! We saw some people having to do the walk of shame back up the stairs from the dining room. Makes sense though when you have a lot of people staying. I have a few minor gripes but nothing that spoiled the trip. With breakfast and dinner I would've liked to have an option of fresh fruit, not tinned, the desserts were gateau and gateau, or pudding and custard. I don't have a sweet tooth so some cheese and biscuits would've been nice. The bars were too understaffed and struggled to cope with the volume of people on various drinks packages, so a long wait between drinks. Only complaint with the room was the very cheap toilet paper, I went out and bought Andrex. My husband was taken ill part way through, and I reported this at 9 pm due to the cautionary tales about Norovirus. I was told they'd send some drinking water up to the room in a few mins, however when we checked out at 10 am it still hadn't arrived! The few staff in were rushed off their feet. All in all thought it was a decent place to stay and good value, I would stay there again.
