“Britannia Did Not Rule”
Reviewed 1 July 2014

In a rush of national fever I felt it time to Fly the Flag and book holiday wise an English seaside hotel for the first time in years. Bracing Scarborough and the historical Britannia Grand Hotel was our choice. Impressed with the location we entered the hotel to find three long queues formed at reception, after a long wait we were asked to pay up front for the stay. We were given a room on the fourth floor and after queuing for a lift we entered the room to find water pouring from the shower light fitting. Back in the queue at reception I asked for another room offering to pay for upgrade, not possible said the receptionist but given a standard room on 5th floor..
Fellow guests advised us not to eat dinner in the hotel as the food was not of a high standard.
The fabric of the hotel was tired and worn although the public rooms had a past grandeur that impressed.
But what a let down of bars understaffed with long queues forming to get a drink, longer queues for breakfast, and with a lift out of action long queues for lifts.
No sign of management on duty, staff looked harassed and overworked and to cap it all on Sunday evening the cabaret show was restricted to National Holiday Guests only. Other paying guests like ourselves were not allowed entry. The hotel advertises evening entertainment for all guests. All in all quite the worst hotel I have stayed in for many years and certainly we will never stay there again.

Room Tip: Only ever book a superior room for the shortest stay possible

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for your comments during your recent visit to us. We will use your feedback to improve the hotel.

I can read from your review not all areas were to your expectations.

Our management team are available 24 hours a day.

Unfortunately during your stay one of our lifts was out of action which is now repaired.

During your stay National Holidays had booked our main ballroom, however entertainment was available for our guests within the Empress Lounge, we have a 365 day a year programme.

we stayed at the grand for 2 nights 31 may - 2nd June. We had a premier room, overlooking beach and harbour. We had the premier breakfast/ dinner package. Our room was freshly decorated. very spacious. Beautiful aspect. watching the sunrise over the harbour was stunning.

We ate in the premier restaurant. good food, great choice. very friendly waiting staff. The hotel has a stunning grand staircase. large bars, sitting areas. A fabulous sunbalcolny The dining room overlooks the beach and cliffs.. A small lift was a bit annoying.and we did use the stairs sometimes rather than wait. Great cafe in main bar/lounge. good coffee etc snacks and cakes. We managed to park outside the hotel, for the whole stay. discount on parking available at reception. On edge of the main shopping area. adjacent to the beach and prom. great stay.

Room Tip: Ask for premier room over looking the beach/sea.

my teenage son and i stayed at The Grand for my birthday, we stayed for one night.

In arrival we where given our key and told our room was down in the basement, when we got to the room it looked very clean and tidy...until we noticed there was no window, it is very very warm down in that basement, it is also near the kitchens and laundry, even in February it was hot at the bottom of the hotel, i decided to go and ask at reception if we could be moved to a room with a window, none where available but i was told we could upgrade to a turret suite for fifteen pounds each, which we did, when we eventually found the right turret it was nice, we where at the very top of the hotel looking out over the sea, the views where stunning, the suite consisted of two connecting rooms, one with double bed, wardrobe etc and the other had two single beds a pullout sofa bed with plenty of space for clothes, connecting these rooms was a beautiful bathroom with jacuzzi style bath and shower....and the main thing was that we had windows.....well worth the upgrade.....on booking it might be a good idea if you specify that you want a room with a window that opens...
other thatn that it is a gorgeous old hotel

Room Tip: request a room with a window

We went on a coach holiday on 23/6/2014. On arrival at the grand we were told we had to take our own cases to our rooms, never had to that before. The room was ok but the bed was 2 singles pushed together with a double sheet on it, it was so hard it was like sleeping on the floor. When we went down for our evening meal there was little choice pork or fish boiled and roast potatoes green beans and sweetcorn and carrots that were so hard you could not use a fork on them. This was served twice we only stayed for 5 days and the breakfast was no better. There were 40 in our group and all were complaining about there rooms and food. This has got to be the worst hotel I have ever stayed in.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for your comments during your recent visit to us. We will use your feedback to improve the hotel.

I can read from your review not all areas were to your expectations.

Our menu has 4 different dishes daily, our Premier restaurant has 5 dishes daily this has been the norm for a number of years.

Portrage is available on request from our reception team.

I've read a lot of negative reviews about this place and I can understand where people are coming from. However, you get what you pay for and for the amount I paid for bed and breakfast it wasn't bad value for money.
The old place could do with a facelift but it's well situated and has great views. The staff were very good and do their best to keep everybody happy, they certainly don't deserve the amount of abuse some posters on here give them.

Booked in at the Grand for the weekend, on our arrival there was numerous guests asking for there money back because they didnt like their rooms so we asked to see ours before payment. We found 1 which wasnt to bad the 2nd was awful so we asked for another 1 which we couldnt even find, so we told them werent staying. The price of the rooms are too expensive for what you are offerered.

Room Tip: Dont go!!!!!!!

We have stopped here a few times in the budget rooms as we are out for most of the times.

The rooms are basic and clean and are ok if your just using your room to sleep in and don't mind not having any windows.

The breakfast food can be a hit and miss once we had apple juice that tasted of bleech and when complained they took it all off.

The receptionist can get busy at times, but what do you expect for a budget price.

We're happy to stop here again.
